It is not required for every PlayStation, and it cannot fix PSN outages, poor Wi-Fi, game-server problems, or an ISP that uses carrier-grade NAT.
Check your NAT type first, try UPnP, and give the console a reserved local IP address before creating manual rules. The correct ports depend on whether you are fixing general PlayStation Network connectivity, a particular game, or Remote Play.

What port forwarding does
Your router gives devices in your home private IP addresses and translates their traffic to the public Internet using NAT. A port is a numbered network endpoint used by a service or game.
- Allowing a port means permitting traffic through a firewall.
- Port forwarding tells the router to send incoming traffic on a port to one specific device, such as your PS4 or PS5.
- UPnP lets compatible applications request these router mappings automatically.
- DMZ places a device outside much of the router’s inbound filtering. It is more exposed and should not be the first solution.
PlayStation reports NAT as Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. These are not the same labels as the “Open,” “Moderate,” and “Strict” terminology often used for Xbox or PC networking.

- NAT Type 1: A direct or unusually open Internet connection. It is not normally the target for a console behind a home router.
- NAT Type 2: The normal, practical target for most home-router setups. Online services generally work, although individual games can still have problems.
- NAT Type 3: A restrictive connection that may affect matchmaking, party chat, peer-to-peer features, or Remote Play.
Port forwarding may remove a router-level restriction, but it does not guarantee NAT Type 2. The result also depends on your router, ISP, NAT architecture, and the game or service involved. Sony explains the Type 1/2/3 terminology in its PlayStation support material: PlayStation NAT guidance.
Check whether you actually need to open ports
Before changing router settings, work through these steps:
- Check the PlayStation Network status page.
- Restart the console.
- Turn off the modem and router, wait at least five minutes, then restart them. Sony includes this step in its troubleshooting guidance for some connection errors.
- Connect the console by Ethernet temporarily. This helps distinguish router reachability from Wi-Fi interference or weak signal.
- Update the router’s firmware.
- Run the PlayStation Internet connection test.
- Enable UPnP if your router supports it, then restart and test again.
- Only create manual forwarding rules if the problem remains or you need predictable mappings.
These steps follow Sony’s current troubleshooting approach, which also recommends checking service status, using a wired connection, reconfiguring the network, and contacting the ISP for router or port-opening assistance. See Sony’s PS5 connection-error guidance.

Menu wording can vary slightly by system language and firmware version. A successful Internet connection test does not prove that every game, voice-chat service, or Remote Play feature has the access it needs.
UPnP or manual port forwarding?
For a typical household, try UPnP first. It is usually simpler because the console or game can request temporary mappings without you entering every rule manually. It is especially useful when more than one PlayStation is on the same network.
Use manual forwarding when UPnP is disabled, unreliable, inconsistent, blocked by router policy, or unsuitable for a network that requires fixed rules. Do not enable UPnP and duplicate manual rules blindly: duplicate or conflicting mappings can make troubleshooting harder.

Neither approach is automatically “safe” or “unsafe.” Security depends on the router, firmware, exposed services, and the exact configuration. Opening router ports can reduce overall network security, so forward only what is needed. Bungie’s explanation of UPnP, port forwarding, and NAT types discusses these trade-offs.

Give the console a stable local IP address
A forwarding rule points to a local IP address. If the router later gives the console a different address, the rule may point to another device or nowhere at all.
Preferred method: DHCP reservation
- Find the console’s current IP address in its connection-status screen.
- Sign in to the primary router.
- Open a section such as DHCP, LAN, Connected Devices, Address Reservation, or Static Lease.
- Select the PS4 or PS5 by hostname or MAC address.
- Reserve its current address and save the change.
DHCP reservation is preferable for most users because the router manages the address without requiring you to manually calculate the subnet mask, gateway, and DNS values.
Alternative: manual static IP
You can configure a static address directly on the console, but you must enter a valid unused IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings. An incorrect value can break the connection or create an address conflict. Sony lists manual static-IP configuration as one possible PS5 connection improvement; its connection troubleshooting page provides the relevant context.
How to create port-forwarding rules
Router interfaces differ. Look for Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT Forwarding, Advanced NAT, or a similar label. A Wi-Fi extender or access point may show a settings page but usually is not the device that should receive the rule.
- Sign in to the primary router, not merely an extender or secondary access point.
- Open the port-forwarding or virtual-server section.
- Create a device entry for the PS4 or PS5, using its reserved local IP address.
- Choose TCP, UDP, or both, according to the rule.
- Enter the external and internal port numbers. For these PlayStation rules they are usually the same.
- Save or apply the rule.
- Reboot the router and console if the router requires it.
- Run the PlayStation connection test and then test the affected game, chat feature, or Remote Play.
Some routers allow a port range such as 3478-3480; others require separate entries for each port. A generic manufacturer example of this process is the NetComm PlayStation setup guide.

Ports to try
Do not treat every table below as a mandatory universal configuration. Sony’s list is given in the context of a specific PS5 connection error, while game publishers may publish narrower or additional rules. Start with the smallest authoritative set that matches your problem.
Sony’s current PS5 troubleshooting list
Sony’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance says to try opening these ports for the relevant connection error:
| Protocol | Ports |
|---|---|
| TCP | 80, 443, 3478-3480 |
| UDP | 3478-3479, 49152-65535 |
The broad UDP range should not automatically be forwarded to every console. It appears in a specific Sony troubleshooting context, not as proof that every PlayStation requires the entire range. Read the full Sony support guidance before using it.
Common manual-forwarding baseline
Third-party game-support documentation commonly uses this narrower starting point:
| Console | TCP | UDP |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | 1935, 3478-3480 |
3074, 3478-3479 |
| PS5 | 1935, 3478-3480 |
3074, 3478-3479 |
Use a game’s official support instructions in preference to a generic list. A publisher may distinguish between ports that only need to be allowed through a firewall and ports that must be forwarded to the console. Bungie’s Destiny networking guidance illustrates that distinction.
Remote Play
Remote Play is a separate use case. Sony documents UDP port 8572 for Remote Play and says forwarding it to the PS4 or PS5 may help when the router blocks access. A console that works for online gaming can therefore still have a Remote Play problem. See Sony’s Remote Play connection guidance.

Game-specific ports
Games can use their own server or peer-to-peer requirements. Check the official support page for the particular game before adding a large number of rules. For example, Capcom publishes additional networking guidance for Street Fighter V on PS4, while Bungie publishes platform-specific Destiny requirements.

Older game-specific lists should not be treated as current platform-wide requirements. A historical PlayStation notice for Bloodborne, for example, listed TCP 18671 and 20443, and UDP 9305 and 9306 for that game’s servers. Those ports are not a universal PS4 or PS5 requirement.
When forwarding still does not work
The rule points to the wrong address
Check that the rule targets the console’s current reserved IP address. This is the most common failure after a router replacement, factory reset, or network change.
Two routers are performing NAT
Double NAT occurs when an ISP gateway and your personal router both act as routers. Forwarding ports only on the second router may not work.
Possible remedies are:
- Put the ISP gateway into bridge or modem mode, if supported.
- Use the personal router as the only router and disable routing on the gateway.
- Forward the required ports through both routers, if bridge mode is unavailable.
- Use access-point or bridge mode on one device.
- Use the gateway’s DMZ for the personal router only when you understand the security and routing consequences. Do not casually place the PlayStation itself in the DMZ.
Your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT
With carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), the ISP shares a public IPv4 address among customers. Your home router may not have a publicly reachable IPv4 address, so forwarding ports locally cannot create an inbound path through the ISP’s network.

5G and mobile broadband services commonly require extra attention to CGNAT. A different connection can be useful as a diagnostic test, but it does not prove that buying a faster plan or a new router will solve the original problem.
UPnP and manual rules conflict
Remove duplicate manual entries temporarily, disable UPnP for a controlled test, or remove the manual rules and test UPnP alone. Change one thing at a time so you know which configuration helped.
The real problem is not port reachability
Forwarding cannot repair a PSN outage, weak or congested Wi-Fi, packet loss, inadequate upload capacity, a faulty modem or router, outdated console software, or a game server that is offline. It also does not make Internet speeds faster or lower ping by itself.

A single external port generally cannot be forwarded to two different internal devices simultaneously. If your household has multiple PS4 or PS5 consoles:
- Prefer reliable UPnP where possible.
- Do not copy identical manual rules to different consoles and expect both to work.
- Follow any game- or router-specific guidance for multiple consoles.
- Test each console independently.
There is no universal static port list that guarantees Type 2 for multiple PlayStations.
Security, cleanup, and rollback
- Forward only ports required by Sony or the game’s publisher.
- Do not forward an entire range unless an authoritative source specifically requires it and you understand the exposure.
- Never expose the router’s administration interface to the Internet.
- Keep router firmware updated.
- Treat DMZ as a carefully controlled diagnostic or special configuration, not a default PlayStation fix.
- Remove temporary rules after testing.
- If UPnP solves the problem, remove unnecessary manual rules rather than leaving both configurations active.
To roll back, delete or disable the forwarding entries, remove the DHCP reservation only if you no longer need it, restore any changed UPnP setting, and restart the router and console. Then run the connection test again.
Should you buy a new router?
Usually, no. Configure the router you already have first. A replacement is worth considering only if the current gateway lacks UPnP or forwarding controls, has unreliable firmware, cannot be placed in bridge mode, or provides poor Wi-Fi coverage.
If you do replace it, look for:
- DHCP reservation.
- Controllable UPnP.
- Manual TCP and UDP forwarding.
- Bridge or access-point mode.
- IPv4 and IPv6 support.
- Clear documentation and regular firmware updates.
Simple app-based mesh systems such as Eero may suit users who prioritize easy management. More configurable ASUS routers can suit experienced users who want detailed NAT and QoS controls; see the ASUS router selector. TP-Link also documents NAT forwarding on supported gaming models, including in its Archer GE800 documentation.
These features do not bypass CGNAT, and a new router can create double NAT if installed behind an ISP gateway incorrectly. Do not buy a premium “gaming” router solely to obtain lower ping or Type 2 NAT.
