The major PlayStation Network outage began on February 7, 2025, and PSN was restored on February 8. The disruption lasted roughly 20 to 24 hours, depending on the region and the start and end points used. Sony later gave PlayStation Plus members five extra days of membership automatically.
This is a historical service update, not a report of a live PSN outage. The official PlayStation Network status page showed all listed services running in the status information reviewed for August 12, 2026. Later PSN incidents, including one reported on July 24, 2026, were separate events.

What happened during the PSN outage?
PlayStation users around the world began reporting widespread PlayStation Network problems on Friday, February 7, 2025. The issue affected more than one isolated game or household connection: users reported trouble signing in, accessing account functions, joining online multiplayer sessions, using social features, opening the PlayStation Store, making purchases, downloading content, and using some network-dependent multimedia applications.

The problems affected both PS4 and PS5 users, although the exact experience varied. Individual games can use their own servers and authentication systems, so not every title or every region necessarily failed in exactly the same way. Some users may also have regained access before others as Sony restored services.

PSN was restored on February 8, 2025
On Saturday, February 8, 2025, PlayStation Support announced that “PSN has been restored” and directed users to the service-status page. Contemporary reports described the outage as lasting nearly 24 hours, with estimates generally falling between approximately 20 and 24 hours.
There is no single start time that applies to every country or user. Reports placed the beginning during the evening in the United States, while users in other time zones experienced the disruption at different local times. For that reason, “roughly 20–24 hours” is more accurate than claiming a precise worldwide duration.
What services were affected?
The central PSN services were broadly unavailable or impaired. Reported problems included:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Signing in to PlayStation Network accounts
- Accessing online multiplayer
- Viewing or using friends, messaging, and other social features
- Opening the PlayStation Store
- Making purchases and downloading games or other content
- Using account-related functions
- Accessing some multimedia applications and other network-dependent features
The outage did not necessarily make every offline feature unusable. A single-player game that did not require PSN authentication could still work, while a game requiring an online check, multiplayer connection, or license verification could fail. Results also depended on the console, game, account, location, and the particular PSN component being restored.
What caused the February 2025 outage?
Sony later described the incident as an “operational issue” affecting network services. The company did not publish a detailed public postmortem in the material reviewed for this report.
That means there is no confirmed basis for stating that the outage was caused by a hack, distributed-denial-of-service attack, cloud-provider failure, authentication defect, or any other specific technical mechanism. Those explanations circulated as speculation, but they should not be presented as established fact.

What compensation did Sony provide?
On February 9, 2025, Sony announced that PlayStation Plus members would receive five additional days of membership. The extension was applied automatically, and PlayStation said members did not need to do anything to claim it.

The available official notice confirms the benefit for PlayStation Plus members; it does not establish that non-Plus PlayStation accounts received the same five-day extension.
How did the compensation work?
- Eligible users: PlayStation Plus members affected by the incident
- Amount: Five extra days of PlayStation Plus membership
- Claim process: Automatic; no action was required
- Not included: A general cash refund, free game, or universal wallet credit
Players who were entitled to the extension should have received it through their membership period rather than by entering a code or submitting a separate claim.
Is PSN currently down?
The February 2025 outage is over. It should not be described as an ongoing outage or as a live event on August 12, 2026. The official status information reviewed for that date displayed “All services are up and running.”
PSN can experience separate, later incidents. A reported outage on July 24, 2026, was not a continuation of the February 2025 disruption and should be checked against its own timeline. The availability of compensation can also differ from one incident to another. No confirmed official announcement of another five-day PlayStation Plus extension for the July 2026 incident was found in the reviewed material.

What should you do if PSN is not working?
The correct troubleshooting path depends on whether the problem is widespread or limited to your home.
If many users are reporting an outage
- Check the official PSN status page first. Look for failures involving account management, gaming and social features, the PlayStation Store, or other listed services.
- Wait for Sony to restore the affected service. Restarting a router, reinstalling a game, or changing console settings cannot repair a confirmed Sony-side outage.
- Avoid repeatedly changing account or network settings. Those steps can create additional problems without improving access while PSN is unavailable.
- Try again after the status changes. Service recovery may be gradual, and one PSN function may return before another.
If the official status page is green
If PSN appears operational and only one console or household is affected, the problem may be local or specific to a game. Sony’s connection guidance and PS5 error-code support recommend working through network troubleshooting, including checking the connection, resetting network settings where appropriate, and power-cycling the modem or router.
- Confirm that other devices in the home can access the internet.
- Restart the PS4 or PS5.
- Power off the modem or router, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
- Run the console’s internet-connection test.
- Check whether the failure affects one game or all PSN features.
- Check the game publisher’s own server-status page if only one title is affected.
- Use PlayStation’s support or Repairs tool if the service is up but the console still cannot connect.
An Ethernet cable or a different home-network setup can be relevant when the fault is isolated to a local Wi-Fi connection. However, buying networking equipment will not restore PSN during a platform-wide outage and should not be treated as a solution to the February 2025 incident.

A router restart can resolve a local connection problem, such as a failed DHCP lease, temporary Wi-Fi issue, or modem fault. It cannot restore Sony’s account, store, multiplayer, or authentication servers when those services are down for users worldwide.
The practical rule is simple: check PSN status before troubleshooting your own network. If the official page shows a major outage, wait. If it shows normal operation and the problem is limited to your household, then local troubleshooting makes sense.

Sony confirmed the restoration and later referred to the event as an operational issue, but it did not provide a more detailed public explanation in the sources reviewed. The following points therefore remain unconfirmed:
