Choose PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming if you want eligible PlayStation catalog games on a PC without a PS4 or PS5 in your setup. Choose PS Remote Play if you own or can access a PS4 or PS5 and want to control that console from your PC. They solve different problems: Premium streams selected games from Sony’s cloud, while Remote Play sends video from your own console. Sony also states that games requiring Premium streaming cannot be played through Remote Play.

Cloud streaming and Remote Play are different services

PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming

Premium cloud streaming runs eligible games on Sony’s servers and delivers the play session through the PlayStation Plus PC app. Sony describes the PC benefit as access to selected PS4 Game Catalog titles and selected Classics Catalog games. You need an adult PlayStation account, an active Premium membership, the free PC app, a compatible controller and a broadband connection.

A local PS4 or PS5 is not listed as a requirement for the PC streaming setup. That makes this the practical route when you have a gaming PC but no PlayStation console available. It does not mean every PlayStation game is included: Sony says availability varies, some catalog games cannot be streamed, and the catalog can change by region and over time. See the PlayStation Plus games and membership plans page for the current US catalog and streaming guidance.

PS Remote Play

Remote Play is a control link to your own PS4 or PS5. The game runs on that console, while the Remote Play app on Windows or Mac displays the video and sends your controller input back over a network. You therefore need access to a compatible console and the game must be installed or otherwise playable on it.

  • Precision Control: The feel, shape, and sensitivity of the DualShock 4’s analog sticks and trigger buttons have been enhanced to offer players absolute control for all games on PlayStation 4.
  • Sharing at your Fingertips: The addition of the Share button makes sharing your greatest gaming moments as easy as a push of a button. Upload gameplay videos and screenshots directly from your system or live-stream your gameplay, all without disturbing the game in progress.
  • New ways to Play: Revolutionary features like the touch pad, integrated light bar, and built-in speaker offer exciting new ways to experience and interact with your games and its 3.5mm audio jack offers a practical personal audio solution for gamers who want to listen to their games in private.
  • Charge Efficiently: The DualShock 4 Wireless Controller can easily be recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when on standby, or with any standard charger with a micro-USB port.

Remote Play is not a substitute for a Premium subscription. Sony explicitly excludes games that must be streamed using a PS Plus Premium membership, along with games requiring PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2 or additional peripherals beyond the supported controllers. The official compatibility statement is on the PS Remote Play page.

What you need for Premium streaming on a PC

Account, plan and age

  • An adult PlayStation account is required.
  • PC streaming is a Premium benefit; Sony’s getting-started guide identifies an 18+ requirement.
  • Install the PlayStation Plus PC app and sign in with the account that holds Premium.
  • Use a compatible controller. Sony specifically names DUALSHOCK 4 for the PC app.

Premium is the relevant tier for PC cloud streaming. Sony’s plan-support documentation shows streaming as a Premium benefit; Essential and Extra should not be treated as equivalent for this purpose. Check the current plan and regional availability on Sony’s PlayStation Plus support pages before subscribing, because benefits and supported regions can change.

Internet connection

Sony’s PC support page publishes a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps and recommends a wired connection. Its US catalog page says 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p. Those are service requirements and guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate, latency or image quality in your home. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, distance to Sony’s servers and other household traffic can still affect play.

PC specifications

Sony’s pages do not present one perfectly consistent minimum operating-system statement. The detailed app-support page lists Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, a 2.0 GHz Intel Core i3, 300 MB of available storage, 2 GB of RAM, a sound card and a USB port. Its recommended configuration lists a 3.5 GHz Intel Core i3 or a 3.8 GHz AMD A10 (or faster), while retaining the 300 MB storage, 2 GB RAM, sound-card and USB-port requirements.

  • The Dualshock 4 wireless controller can be easily recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when in rest mode, or with any standard charger using a USB cable (type A to micro B sold separately)

Sony’s separate getting-started guide lists Windows 10 as the minimum. Because these live pages conflict and may be updated, verify the current requirement on the official PS Plus PC support page before installing. Do not assume that an older Windows version will remain supported simply because it appears on one page.

What you need for Remote Play on a PC

Console and network

Remote Play requires a PS4 or PS5 that you can use with your PlayStation account. Install the PS Remote Play app on Windows or macOS, sign in, and follow its prompts to connect to the console. The game session remains on the console; closing the connection does not convert it into cloud streaming.

Sony describes Remote Play as requiring a high-speed network. The cited support material does not establish a like-for-like minimum Mbps number against the 5 Mbps cloud-streaming figure, so a direct claim that one service is inherently faster would be unsupported. A wired PC connection is still the sensible starting point when possible.

Windows requirements

Sony’s current UK Remote Play support page lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 100 MB of storage, at least 2 GB of RAM, a 1,024 × 768-or-higher display, a sound card and a USB port. These specifications are from the UK page; check the support page for your own region because app requirements can change.

The same page lists macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe for Mac users. This article compares PC play, but the Mac requirement is useful if you are deciding between Sony’s two computer apps.

Which games each option can play

Premium streaming’s catalog boundary

The PS Plus PC app exposes only selected PS4 Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles. A game’s presence in a PlayStation Plus catalog does not automatically prove that it can be streamed: Sony warns that some catalog games are not streamable. Availability can also vary by country, plan and time.

Streaming does not provide the same ownership model as running a disc or download from your console. Sony also states that game add-ons and downloadable content cannot be used when streaming a PS Plus game. Local multiplayer is limited to two players on compatible games, and Party Chat is not currently supported in the PC streaming experience.

Remote Play’s console boundary

Remote Play can handle supported games running on the linked PS4 or PS5, including games outside the Premium catalog, but it is not universal. Sony excludes titles requiring a VR headset, titles requiring additional peripherals other than DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge, and titles that must be streamed through Premium.

Windows PC and Mac users may use keyboard keys in games that support hardware keyboards. That is a game-specific capability, not a promise that every Remote Play title accepts keyboard input.

How to start Premium cloud streaming on PC

  1. Confirm that your PlayStation account is an adult account with an active Premium membership in a supported region.
  2. Check the current Windows and hardware requirements on Sony’s PS Plus PC support page.
  3. Install the PlayStation Plus PC app from Sony’s official support instructions.
  4. Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 or another controller that you have verified for the app. Sony says some third-party XInput controllers may work but does not guarantee full compatibility.
  5. Use a broadband connection meeting the published 5 Mbps minimum; choose Ethernet if available.
  6. Open the app, sign in, browse the games marked as available for streaming, and launch a supported title.

If a catalog game is visible but has no streaming option, treat that as a catalog limitation rather than an installation fault. Sony’s catalog guidance explicitly allows for games that cannot be streamed.

How to start Remote Play on PC

  1. Make sure you have access to a PS4 or PS5 and that the game you want to play is available on that console.
  2. Check your computer against the current regional Remote Play requirements. The UK support page’s Windows baseline is Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, 100 MB storage, 2 GB RAM, a 1,024 × 768 display, sound and USB.
  3. Install the PS Remote Play app for Windows or Mac from Sony’s support instructions.
  4. Connect a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge controller by USB or the method supported by your system.
  5. Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the console and follow the app’s on-screen connection process.
  6. Select the PS4 or PS5 shown by the app, then choose a game that does not require excluded VR, peripheral or Premium-streaming functionality.

The exact console and app labels can change with software updates, so use the prompts in the current version rather than relying on an old screenshot or a guide written for a previous console firmware.

Controller and peripheral considerations

Controller support can decide the result before bandwidth does. For the PS Plus PC app, Sony names DUALSHOCK 4 and warns that third-party XInput controllers are not guaranteed to be fully compatible. For Remote Play, Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge.

A controller that works in Windows is not automatically supported by every PlayStation app or game. If a title depends on a VR headset, instrument, camera or another accessory outside Sony’s named controller list, Remote Play may be unavailable. Cloud streaming has its own catalog and peripheral limits, so check the individual game listing instead of assuming that a console accessory will pass through the stream.

Network, latency and picture quality: what can and cannot be concluded

Cloud streaming adds a round trip between your PC, Sony’s streaming service and the game process. Remote Play adds a round trip between your PC and your own console. That distinction explains why local network layout and console location matter, but Sony’s published pages do not contain a controlled head-to-head latency test. Neither service can honestly be declared the universal latency winner from the stated requirements alone.

The 5 Mbps figure for Premium PC streaming is a floor, not a target for every situation. Sony’s 15 Mbps figure is associated with 1080p on its US plan page; it should not be read as a guaranteed resolution or frame rate. For either option, test the connection at the time and place you intend to play, pause large downloads, and prefer Ethernet when practical.

Limitations that commonly change the decision

  • No Premium-streaming games through Remote Play: Sony explicitly excludes games that must be streamed with Premium.
  • Catalog selection: Premium streaming covers selected titles, not the complete PlayStation library.
  • DLC and add-ons: Sony says add-ons and DLC cannot be used while streaming a PS Plus game on PC.
  • Party Chat: Sony says Party Chat is not currently supported in the PS Plus PC streaming app.
  • Local multiplayer: PC streaming supports local multiplayer for up to two players on compatible games.
  • VR and extra peripherals: Remote Play excludes games requiring VR or additional peripherals beyond the supported controllers.
  • Regional and software changes: Sony’s support pages, catalogs, operating-system requirements and app availability are live information and can change.

A practical decision framework

Pick Premium cloud streaming when

  • You do not have a PS4 or PS5 available for the session.
  • Your priority is sampling eligible PS4 or Classics Catalog games through a subscription.
  • You accept the Premium requirement and the possibility that a catalog title is not streamable.
  • You can use the PlayStation Plus PC app and a supported controller.

Pick Remote Play when

  • You own or can access a PS4 or PS5 and want to play the games installed or available there.
  • You want your console’s library rather than a rotating subscription catalog.
  • You need DualSense or DualSense Edge support listed for the Remote Play app.
  • The game does not require excluded VR, peripheral or Premium-streaming functionality.

When neither is the right answer

If you need a game that is absent from the Premium catalog, cannot be streamed, depends on unsupported accessories, or is not available on your linked console, neither service solves that specific requirement. Likewise, a weak or unstable connection can make both forms of remote play frustrating even when the PC meets the published specifications.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The PlayStation Plus app will not stream a game

  • Confirm that the account has Premium, not merely another PlayStation Plus tier.
  • Check whether the title is one of the selected games eligible for streaming in your region.
  • Verify that the app and Windows version still meet Sony’s current requirements.
  • Check the controller connection; third-party XInput support is not guaranteed.

Remote Play cannot find the console

  • Confirm that the app is signed into the PlayStation account associated with the PS4 or PS5.
  • Check that the console and PC have a high-speed network connection.
  • Update the Remote Play app and consult the current regional support page for changed requirements.

The picture is unstable or controls feel delayed

  • Move from congested Wi-Fi to a wired connection where possible.
  • Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the same network.
  • Remember that Sony’s Mbps figures are minimum or guidance values, not a latency guarantee.
  • For Remote Play, consider the network path between the PC and the physical console; for cloud streaming, the path to Sony’s service is the relevant one.

Final recommendation for PC players

There is no single winner because the services answer different needs. Premium cloud streaming is the better fit for a PC-first player who wants eligible subscription catalog games and does not want a console in the setup. Remote Play is the better fit for a console owner who wants to use the PS4 or PS5 from a PC and play supported games running on that machine.

Before choosing, verify three things on Sony’s current regional pages: that your desired game is eligible, that your operating system and network meet the published requirements, and that your controller and any required peripherals are supported. Those checks matter more than the service names, because neither option covers every game or guarantees identical performance in every home.
