Before buying a Commander precon, verify the exact release and edition, check its official contents and card list, then compare the live listing with the product you expect to receive. Treat resale as a separate calculation: it depends on current completed sales and the exact card versions, not just the deck’s name or advertised value.
Start by identifying the exact deck and edition
“Commander precon” describes a ready-to-play deck, not a single standardized package. Contents, card treatments, and included accessories can differ between products and editions. Begin with the full deck name and release, then determine whether the listing is for the standard version, a Collector’s Edition, a Secret Lair product, or another special edition.

Match the seller’s title and photographs to the official product page for that specific release. A similar name is not enough: a special edition may include different treatments, and a listing may show a package that is not the one being offered. If the seller’s description, photos, and edition name do not agree, get clarification before buying.
- Deck and release: Confirm the complete product name, not just the franchise, set, or commander.
- Edition: Check whether it is standard or a special version, and note any stated foil or other card treatment.
- Language and condition: Confirm the listing’s language and whether the item is new, sealed, opened, or otherwise graded or described.
- Listing identity: Make sure the seller’s photos show the same edition and package named in the listing.
For example, Wizards of the Coast’s Final Fantasy product page distinguishes the standard and Collector’s Edition decks by foil treatment. That distinction is a product-specific detail, not a rule that every Collector’s Edition has the same contents or treatment.

It helps to keep two records while comparing offers: the product identity established by Wizards’ release page, and the particular item described by the seller. The first tells you what that release is supposed to be; the second tells you what the seller claims is for sale. A title that omits the edition or combines multiple versions is not enough to bridge the gap. Check photographs and description details, and ask for confirmation if the offer leaves the version unclear.
What comes in a Commander precon?
Use the product-specific official contents section to check what the box is supposed to include. Do not assume that every precon contains the same accessories or that a list from one release applies to another. Depending on the product, the listed package may include a ready-to-play deck, tokens, a reference card, a deck box, a sample pack, counters, or other items.
Wizards’ Foundations Commander product page, for example, says each deck contains a ready-to-play 100-card deck, ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. The Final Fantasy product page also lists a Collector Booster Sample Pack. These examples illustrate why the exact product page matters; they do not establish a universal precon checklist.

|---|---|---|
| Deck | Stated deck size and card treatment on the specific product page | Confirms the expected core product and distinguishes edition-specific treatments. |
| Tokens and reference materials | Any listed token count, reference card, or other printed insert | These are not necessarily identical across releases. |
| Storage and extras | Deck box, sample pack, counters, or other components explicitly listed | A listing can be incomplete even if the deck itself is present. |
| Actual listing contents | Seller’s description and photographs compared with the official list | Helps identify missing items, mismatched editions, or unclear listings before purchase. |
Keep a simple distinction in mind: the official contents page establishes what is listed for the product; the seller’s offer establishes what that seller says is included in the particular item. For a new sealed product, check that the edition and package match. For an opened or incomplete item, compare the seller’s stated contents with the official list and ask about anything not shown or described.
Make a short contents checklist from the relevant official page before you assess an opened item. Record the deck and any separately listed pieces—such as the tokens, reference card, box, or sample pack—then compare each one with the seller’s description and photos. If the page lists an item but the seller does not say whether it is present, treat that as an unanswered question, not proof that it is included. A missing accessory may matter to completeness even when the cards themselves are intact.
How do I check the decklist before buying?
- Open the official page for the exact release. Use its product-specific decklist or card list rather than a generic page about the set or Commander.
- Check card names against your goals. If you want the deck for play, look at the included cards and strategy to see whether they fit your preferred play experience. If you want particular singles, verify each card by name.
- Look for explicit printing and treatment details. A matching card name does not necessarily mean the physical card has the printing or treatment you want. Check product images and any explicit version details when those matter.
- Identify new-to-Magic cards and reprints from product-specific information. Use the labels and details on the relevant official list; do not infer that a card is new or reprinted from its appearance in a generic list.
- Compare the product list with the listing. Confirm the deck and edition match, and check what the seller says about language, condition, and completeness.
Official lists are useful for learning which card names are included, but some interactive lists are not literal displays of the cards in the box. Wizards’ Fallout Commander decklist page warns that its list can automatically pull the newest printing of each card from its database, including printings that are not in the product. It describes the lists as interactive lists of included cards, not card-for-card product displays.

That caveat changes how to use the list: treat it as evidence of card identity, not proof of the exact physical printing in a sealed deck. If a particular printing matters for collecting, appearance, or resale, look for product-specific printing details or images rather than relying on the dynamically rendered card image. If those details are not established on the page, do not assume the version shown in the list is in the box.

The newest database image can be informative about what a card looks like in another printing, but it is not a substitute for packaging information or an explicit printing note. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing an official interactive list with a seller’s product photograph: they may answer different questions.
Which cards are reprints?
Check the product-specific list for the release’s explicit labels identifying reprints and new-to-Magic cards. Those labels help answer whether the deck introduces cards or includes previously printed ones, but card names alone do not settle every printing question. A reprinted name may appear in more than one physical version, and a database image may show a newer printing than the one packaged in the product.
For a buyer choosing between decks, record the cards that matter to you and verify them at the level you need:
- For play: Confirm the card is included by name and consider whether the deck’s strategy suits you.
- For a specific appearance: Confirm the physical treatment or printing using product-specific details or images.
- For collecting or resale: Identify the exact version being sold, not merely the card name.
Do not treat a deck’s number of reprints as a value verdict by itself. Whether a reprint is useful to you depends on the card, its version, and your purpose for buying the deck. The official list can establish product-specific card information; it does not by itself establish current market value.

When comparing two lists, focus on cards that actually affect your decision rather than counting every label in isolation. A card may be important because you want to play it, because you want a particular treatment, or because you are comparing resale options. Those are different reasons to check a card, and the card’s name alone may settle only the first part. If an official page labels a card as new-to-Magic or a reprint, use that product-specific label; do not extend it into a claim about what the card or deck is worth.

Inspect the seller’s offer, not just the product page
An official product page can establish what a particular release is designed to contain, but it cannot certify an individual marketplace seller, their current stock, or the condition of the item they are offering. Wizards may name a retailer or marketplace as a sales channel for a product; that does not verify a particular live offer on that channel.
Before paying, compare the offer against this checklist:
- Identity: Does the listing name the exact deck and edition you want?
- Photographs: Do the images show the same packaging and edition? Are they of the actual item or generic product images?
- Condition and completeness: Is it sealed, opened, or incomplete? Are any missing or damaged components disclosed?
- Language: Does the offered language match your needs?
- Seller and fulfillment: Who is actually selling and shipping the item? A marketplace’s name is not a substitute for checking the seller.
- Total cost: Include shipping and any other charges shown at checkout, not only the headline price.
- Returns: Read the offer’s return terms before buying, especially if the edition, condition, or completeness is uncertain.
If a listing has no useful photographs, uses a title that combines multiple editions, or leaves the condition unclear, it may be impossible to confirm what will arrive. Ask the seller a specific question—such as whether the item is the standard or Collector’s Edition and whether all listed accessories are included—and keep the answer with the order information. If the seller cannot resolve a material mismatch, choose a clearer offer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWizards’ product pages and retailer references can help you find where a product may be sold, but they do not authenticate an offer or guarantee its current condition. For example, a marketplace being named as a retail channel does not tell you whether a particular third-party listing is sealed, complete, correctly identified, or fairly priced. Read the live offer as its own evidence and confirm the seller and fulfillment details shown at checkout.
How to compare two or more precons
Make the comparison around the reason you are buying. A deck that is appealing for play is not automatically the better collectible purchase, and a special treatment does not establish that a deck will be worth more later. Compare each release on the same dimensions:
| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Cards and strategy | Does the included list and play approach fit what you want to play? |
| New cards and reprints | Which cards are identified as new or reprinted, and which specific ones matter to you? |
| Edition and treatments | Are the products standard or special editions, and do the stated treatments differ? |
| Completeness | Does each offer include the deck and accessories listed for that release? |
| Total purchase cost and terms | What is the full checkout cost, and how do seller, condition, shipping, and returns compare? |
| Resale evidence | What do current completed transactions show for the sealed product and exact card versions? |
Keep play value and collectible treatment value separate in your notes. For play, weigh the cards and strategy you will actually use. For collecting, weigh the precise edition, printing, condition, and completeness. Combining those into one claim—such as saying a deck is “worth it” because it contains a desirable treatment—can obscure what you are paying for.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you are comparing offers rather than just decklists, keep the comparison like-for-like: standard against standard, the same language where possible, and similar condition and completeness. Note the total checkout cost and the seller terms alongside card and strategy differences. That avoids treating a lower headline price as a better deal when the offer is for another edition or leaves out components you expected.

Is a Commander deck worth buying for resale?
There is no reliable resale verdict without a named deck, exact edition, and dated market evidence. Resale value changes over time and can differ by edition, condition, language, and card printing. The official product information establishes contents and card details for its release; it does not establish a current market price or demonstrate that the deck will appreciate.
To evaluate a specific product, compare the sealed deck with the exact versions of its included cards, using current completed sales rather than asking prices alone. Then account for the costs of turning a purchase into a sale:
- Define the item. Record the full product name, edition, language, condition, and whether the box is sealed or opened.
- Check completed sales for comparable sealed products. Match the release and edition as closely as possible. Separate completed transactions from active listings, which show what sellers are asking rather than what buyers paid.
- Check the exact card versions. If comparing against singles, identify the physical printings and treatments included in the product. Do not use a database’s newest printing as a proxy for a different version in the box.
- Subtract selling costs. Deduct applicable marketplace fees, shipping, and condition-related costs from the amount you could realistically receive.
- Compare like with like. A sealed deck and a collection of individually sold cards are different sale propositions; account for the effort and costs involved in selling singles.
A useful calculation is net proceeds, not headline value: expected sale proceeds minus fees, shipping, and other costs. The calculation is only as sound as its comparables. If completed sales for the exact edition or card versions are unavailable, say that the evidence is insufficient rather than filling the gap with asking prices or a general estimate.
Also compare the resale calculation with what you would pay to acquire the item, including shipping and other checkout charges. A desirable card list or special treatment is not itself evidence of profit: you still need completed-sale comparisons for the exact sealed release or the exact included card versions, and then must allow for selling costs. Where those comparisons are missing, a confident dollar estimate would overstate what the available transaction evidence can show. Wizards’ product pages establish release details, not resale prices or investment performance.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every precon has the same package: Accessory lists vary by release; check the product-specific contents.
- Confusing card identity with physical printing: A list may identify the card while rendering a version not found in the box.
- Assuming a marketplace listing is verified: Inspect the specific seller, item, condition, shipping, and return terms.
- Using asking prices as proof of resale value: Look for completed transactions for comparable items.
- Mixing play and collectible value: Decide whether you want a deck to play, a particular treatment to collect, or an item to resell, then assess the relevant evidence separately.
- Making a future appreciation assumption: Current contents and past transactions do not guarantee future prices.
A final pre-purchase check
Before placing the order, make sure you can answer four questions clearly: Is this the exact release and edition I want? Does its official contents list match what the seller says is included? Have I checked the card names and, where relevant, the actual printings or treatments? If resale matters, have I used comparable completed sales and accounted for selling costs? If any answer is uncertain, resolve that uncertainty before treating the offer as a good buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What comes in a Commander precon?
It depends on the exact release and edition. Check that product’s official contents section for the deck and any listed tokens, reference card, deck box, sample pack, counters, or other pieces. For example, Wizards says Foundations Commander decks include a ready-to-play 100-card deck, ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box; other products may list different extras.
How do I check the decklist before buying?
Open the official product-specific decklist or card list and confirm the exact release. Use it to check card names and any explicit new-card, reprint, or printing details. Some interactive lists display the newest database printing rather than the exact card in the box, so verify treatments or physical versions through product-specific details or images when those matter.
Which cards are reprints?
Check the exact product’s official list for labels identifying reprints and new-to-Magic cards. A card name alone does not establish which physical printing or treatment is included, so check product-specific version details if appearance, collecting, or resale matters.
Is a Commander deck worth buying for resale?
There is no universal answer. Compare current completed sales for the exact sealed product and edition with the exact versions of included cards, then account for marketplace fees, shipping, and condition-related costs. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence, and past or current prices do not guarantee future appreciation.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, match the exact edition and release to its official contents and card list, then verify that the seller’s item, condition, language, and terms agree. For resale, use completed sales for comparable versions and deduct selling costs; a card list or special treatment alone cannot establish value.
