Portal streams supported games from a paired PS5 or, for eligible titles, from Sony’s cloud service with PlayStation Plus Premium. Bloomberg reported in November 2024 that Sony was developing a portable console intended to play PS5 games, but said the project was early, likely years away and could be canceled. No public specifications establish whether that device would run games locally. The clearest possible difference is therefore streaming versus potential local play—not a confirmed spec-by-spec contest.
What PlayStation Portal does today
Sony sells PlayStation Portal as a Remote Player for compatible games installed on a PS5. In Remote Play mode, the PS5 streams the game over Wi-Fi to Portal; the console must be paired with the device, connected to broadband, and either powered on or in Rest Mode. Supported titles include PS5 and PS4 games, subject to Sony’s exclusions. The experience depends on network quality. Sony’s Portal product page lists an 8-inch LCD, 1080p resolution and up to 60 fps. Sony says a minimum 5 Mbps connection is needed and recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience; those are Sony’s stated requirements and guidance, not independent performance measurements.

Cloud streaming is another route, not local play
Sony also documents cloud streaming on Portal for PlayStation Plus Premium members. Eligible games include a selection from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital PS5 games in the user’s library. In this mode, the user’s own PS5 does not need to be powered on. Availability depends on the game and Sony’s service terms. It adds a way to stream without using a nearby PS5, but does not mean Portal installs or runs games locally. Sony’s Portal update listings include a cloud-streaming update dated November 5, 2025, and a 1080p High Quality mode update dated March 17, 2026.
Controls, display and audio
Portal supports DualSense-style haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in games that support those features. Audio options include built-in speakers, wired audio and PlayStation Link wireless devices; Sony names PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite as compatible products. Sony’s product information describes these features. The 1080p and up-to-60-fps figures are published capabilities; streaming conditions affect what a player actually experiences.

What has been reported about a separate handheld
On November 25, 2024, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed people familiar with development, that Sony was in the early stages of developing a portable console intended to play PS5 games on the move. The report said a launch was likely years away and Sony might decide not to release the device. That is reporting about a possible project, not an official product announcement. Bloomberg’s report is the basis for the claim. Ars Technica also covered the reported distinction between the possible console and Portal, but its account relies on Bloomberg rather than independent confirmation. Ars Technica’s coverage.
Sony’s published Portal information does not provide specifications for a separate handheld. The reviewed sources do not confirm a name, launch date, price, processor, screen, battery, storage, local-play capability, backward compatibility or docking mode. In particular, the Bloomberg description of a console intended to play PS5 games does not establish whether it would execute games locally, stream them, or use both approaches.

Should you buy Portal or wait?
Portal makes sense if its streaming model fits
Consider Portal if you already have a PS5 and want to play compatible installed games away from the television while the console remains online. If you want to stream eligible games without relying on your own PS5 being on, check Sony’s current Premium catalog and eligibility terms first. Portal’s documented function is streaming, so it is not the choice for someone who specifically needs a portable PlayStation that runs games locally without a network connection.
Waiting is a bet, not a product comparison
Waiting could make sense if local play is essential and you are comfortable postponing a purchase for a device that may never reach stores. There is no verified launch window, price or specification sheet to compare with Portal, and the Bloomberg report explicitly left open the possibility that Sony would cancel the project. Do not treat rumored component details or predictions as confirmed features.

Bottom line: the meaningful difference is still hypothetical
Portal’s role is established: it streams supported PlayStation games, either from a paired PS5 or through eligible cloud streaming. A separate handheld could differ if it runs games locally, but that capability—and every practical detail needed to judge it—remains unconfirmed. Choose Portal based on the streaming use case it offers now; wait only if you are willing to accept the uncertainty around a reported project.
