If a PlayStation page says it can’t connect to a server, first check PlayStation Network status, then confirm the address you entered and narrow down whether the problem affects one page, your browser, or your whole connection. The right fix depends on where the message appears: Sony’s specific browser guidance covers PS4 error WV-33898-1, while its PS5 instructions address console network error WS-114241-3.
1. Check whether PlayStation Network is having an issue
Open the official PlayStation Network Service Status page and look for a service problem or maintenance notice. The page is live, so check it when the error occurs rather than relying on an earlier status report. If a service is affected, local network changes may not resolve the problem; wait and check the status page again.
2. Identify where the error happens
Before changing settings, note the device and the exact scope of the failure. This helps distinguish a PlayStation service or sign-in problem from a URL, browser, or local connection issue.
- One PlayStation page or sign-in flow fails: Check the address and try another browser or device if available. If the page works elsewhere, focus on the original browser or device.
- Other websites also fail on that device: Check the device’s internet connection and restart the router or modem.
- PlayStation connectivity fails on a console too: Follow the instructions for that console and the specific error code, rather than assuming browser troubleshooting will fix it.
For desktop or mobile account sign-in problems, keep the exact URL, device and browser, and full error message. These details help establish whether the issue is limited to one browser or affects the account flow more broadly.

3. If the message appears in the PS4 browser
Sony associates PS4 error WV-33898-1 with the message “There was a problem connecting to the server.” For this error, PlayStation Support’s WV-33898-1 guidance recommends checking the URL, checking service status, trying a wired connection if possible, restarting the console and router or modem, and trying manual DNS settings.
- Check the URL. Re-enter the address carefully and confirm it is the PlayStation page you intended to open. PlayStation Support specifically advises checking the entered URL when this error occurs in the web browser.
- Try a wired connection if possible. Connect the PS4 to the router with Ethernet and retry. This tests the console’s wireless connection; it will not correct an outage or a problem limited to a particular webpage.
- Restart the console and network equipment. Turn off the PS4 and router or modem, wait at least five minutes, then restart them and try again.
- Consider DNS only if the basic checks fail. Use the PS4 network setup options to try manual DNS settings. DNS changes are a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix; avoid changing other advanced settings without knowing the values your network requires.
4. If the problem is console connectivity
PS5 error WS-114241-3
For PS5 error WS-114241-3, PlayStation Support’s error-code page advises checking service status, restarting the console, testing the internet connection, restarting the router, and trying again later if the issue is temporary. Sony notes: “This may be a temporary issue. Please try again after a while.” Follow that guidance for this PS5 error; it is not a universal diagnosis for every website connection message.

Other PS4 or PS5 network problems
Use the PlayStation internet connection setup guide to check the console’s network setup and connection test. Confirm the network name and password, then retry the connection. If the console still cannot connect, consult the support page for its exact error code.
Do not guess at IP address, DNS, MTU, or proxy values. PlayStation’s setup guidance recommends asking your internet service provider or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with those settings. Sony also states that PS5 does not support IPv6-only network connections.
