“This application failed to start because plusr1.dll was not found.” If plusr1.dll is missing, Windows usually needs the legacy application that installed it repaired or reinstalled, not a random replacement DLL.

- The error appears when opening Microsoft Plus. or an old Windows XP utility: repair or reinstall Microsoft Plus. for Windows XP, or the specific Plus. component involved.
- Another old application displays the error: repair or reinstall that application instead. No reliable public record identifies a specific modern game or current Windows component that owns plusr1.dll.
- The filename might be
plusmore.dll: check the spelling carefully. Some public file records identifyplusmore.dllas “PlusR1.DLL,” while others listplusr1.dllseparately. Do not rename one file to the other without evidence from the original installer. - Antivirus recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The program worked before a migration, cleanup, uninstall, or disk-image restore: use the original installer, backup, or System Restore point that predates the failure.
- The application is 32-bit: it needs the matching 32-bit component from its own installation package. Available public records describe plusr1.dll as a 32-bit DLL.
- The message says “specified module could not be found,” although the file exists: a dependency of plusr1.dll may be missing. Reinstalling the parent application is still the safest first step.
What plusr1.dll is
Public file inventories associate plusr1.dll with Microsoft Plus. for Windows XP, a separate Microsoft add-on released in 2001. It was not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or device-driver component. Microsoft’s product lifecycle record shows that Plus. for Windows XP is obsolete and no longer supported.
The exact binary identity is not completely settled. Third-party records report a 32-bit file of roughly 1.95 MB and list version information, but those details have not been verified against an available Microsoft binary. Another record uses “PlusR1.DLL” when describing plusmore.dll. Treat the exact filename, version, and installation path as something to confirm from the requesting program’s original package.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution.
Repair it from Windows settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft Plus. for Windows XP or the older application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
Many older programs do not expose a Repair button in Settings. Use Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the relevant program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the installer and restart the computer.
Reinstall from trusted original media
If repair is unavailable:
- Uninstall only the application that owns the file.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original licensed CD, a verified backup, or installation media you already trust.
- If the installer offers optional components, install the component that originally used the file.
- Start the application from its normal shortcut.
Do not download plusr1.dll separately. A replacement from an unknown source can be the wrong build, the wrong architecture, modified, or bundled with malware. It can also leave the application missing other files or registry settings.
If the program is very old, right-click its shortcut or executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, and try the compatibility troubleshooter. Compatibility mode may help an obsolete application start, but it cannot make an incorrect DLL or missing dependency valid.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confirm which program requests the file
If you do not know the owner:
- Read the complete error dialog and note the executable name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Check the folder containing the executable.
- Look for the exact spelling of
plusr1.dllin the application’s installer files, logs, or configuration. - If the error persists, check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer. Review Windows Logs → Application around the failure time.
A dependency-analysis tool or Microsoft Process Monitor can also show which executable is attempting to load the DLL. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed a file after the application was installed.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the application folder or
plusr1.dll. - If the item came from trusted original installation media, verify its path and publisher before taking action.
- Restore it only when you are confident the source is legitimate.
- Reinstall the parent application if the file was removed or the alert remains uncertain.
Do not create an exclusion simply to make the error disappear. If the file appeared in a temporary folder, a user profile folder, or another location unrelated to the old application, run a full scan. Microsoft Defender Offline can check for threats before normal Windows processes load.

Fix 3: Check the filename, path, and architecture
First confirm whether the application requests plusr1.dll or plusmore.dll. These names are not interchangeable merely because some public indexes connect them.
Recommended Free Tools
Also check the application’s architecture:
- A 32-bit application needs its 32-bit version of the component.
- A 64-bit application cannot normally use an arbitrary 32-bit replacement.
- Do not copy the file into both
C:WindowsSystem32andC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not place a downloaded DLL in a Windows system folder to satisfy an application error.
Windows searches the application directory and other locations according to its DLL search rules. Planting an unknown DLL in a searched folder can create security and version problems. The safest location is normally the owning application’s own directory, and only when the file came from its trusted installer or backup.
Fix 4: Investigate dependencies
If a trusted copy of plusr1.dll is present beside the program but the error remains, the missing item may be one of its dependent DLLs.
Check the following:
- Confirm that the file is in the application’s installation directory.
- Start the program and record the complete error wording.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for a related application error.
- Repair or reinstall the application so its dependencies are installed together.
- Check whether the installer has a separate prerequisite or runtime step.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or a Windows feature will restore plusr1.dll. No verified Microsoft redistributable package for this filename was identified.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when broader corruption is suspected
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected system files. They will not normally recreate an obsolete Microsoft Plus. file that was never part of the current Windows installation.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:

- Test the affected application again.
A successful result means Windows repaired its own component store or system files. It does not prove that plusr1.dll was restored. If the error remains, return to the owning application’s installer.

If you want to avoid repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application that owns plusr1.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began after software removal, a cleanup operation, or another system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system settings, installed programs, and system files. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before continuing.
Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver problem
plusr1.dll is not identified as a device driver. Updating drivers through Device Manager is therefore not a primary fix.
If the same computer also has separate graphics, audio, or hardware errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not replace plusr1.dll with a driver download. When manually checking many devices is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported outdated drivers; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It will not replace the need to repair the application that requests plusr1.dll.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.

Running it against an ordinary application library can produce a message that the DllRegisterServer entry point is missing. That does not repair a damaged installation or install a missing dependency. Use the application’s Repair or reinstall option instead.

FAQ
Is plusr1.dll a Windows 11 or Windows 10 system file?
No current Windows installation should be expected to provide it. Public records associate it with the obsolete Microsoft Plus. for Windows XP package or an application that depended on that legacy software.
Can I download plusr1.dll from a DLL website?
Do not do so. The file may be malicious, mismatched, modified, or the wrong architecture, and copying it may not fix the actual dependency failure. Use the original application installer, licensed media, or a verified backup.
Should I rename plusmore.dll to plusr1.dll?
No. Public records conflict about the relationship between the two names. Rename or substitute a file only when the original installer or application documentation proves that it is correct.
Will Windows Update restore the file?
There is no evidence that Windows Update distributes plusr1.dll. You may check for updates for general system maintenance, but repair or reinstall the owning application.
What if the program still fails after reinstalling?
Confirm the exact filename, identify the requesting executable, check antivirus history, and investigate dependencies. If the software is from the Windows XP era, compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11 may be the remaining problem rather than the missing file itself.
Is there an official Microsoft download for plusr1.dll?
No current official Microsoft download package for this DLL was verified. Use original licensed Microsoft Plus. media or a trusted backup rather than an isolated DLL download.
