The “snap” part refers to an MMC snap-in component. Microsoft Management Console, or MMC, loads snap-ins to provide administrative tools such as Print Management. The related console file is printmanagement.msc.

On a 64-bit Windows installation, the normal locations are generally:
C:WindowsSystem32pmcsnap.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64pmcsnap.dll
System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit administrative tool or printer-management process can therefore need the x86 copy even when the operating system itself is 64-bit.
File versions and sizes vary by Windows release, architecture, cumulative update, and servicing branch. Historical Microsoft file tables show different x86 and x64 builds, so there is no single version or file size that should be copied to every PC.

The timing matters. Note whether the problem began after a Windows upgrade, optional-feature removal, failed update, cleanup utility, antivirus action, disk problem, or system corruption. Also note whether it happens while opening Print Management, adding a printer, connecting to a shared printer, or starting an unrelated application.
Fix 1: Install or reinstall Print Management
The current Windows capability associated with the console is Print Management Console Feature on Demand. Its capability name is:
Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0
Microsoft lists this capability for Windows 10 version 2004 and later in its Features on Demand catalog.
- Press Start and type
Terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0

- Restart Windows.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:

- Press Enter.
To check whether Windows believes the capability is installed, run:
DISM /Online /Get-CapabilityInfo /CapabilityName:Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0
Look for:
State : Installed
If the command reports that the capability is unavailable, first install pending Windows updates and restart. The required package may need to come from Windows Update or a matching Windows installation source.
Windows Home editions may not include the Print Management console. If you are running Home, confirm the edition under Settings → System → About. Use the normal printer controls in Settings or Control Panel, or move to an edition that supports the console. Do not copy printmanagement.msc and DLLs from another computer.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
If the capability is installed but pmcsnap.dll is still missing or corrupted, repair Windows in the correct order. DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected files. SFC then checks the installed files and replaces damaged copies.
- Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test
printmanagement.mscagain.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
If DISM says the source files cannot be found, repair Windows Update first and try again. Do not use a DLL website as the missing source.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to see which component is actually failing. Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or interrupted cumulative update can leave the component store and installed files out of sync.

Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
If Windows Update itself is failing:
- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Follow the prompts, then restart.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
- If needed, open Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.
Microsoft documents the repair path in its Windows Update troubleshooter guidance. After updating, run DISM and SFC again if the DLL error remains.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a damaged-looking system file. It can also flag a malicious file that happens to use the same name.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
pmcsnap.dll. - Note the exact file path and detection reason.
Restore or allow the file only if all of these are true:

- The file is under the Windows directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The file belongs to the expected Windows architecture and component.
- You have ruled out an active malware infection.
Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security documentation. If the file is in a temporary folder, a game directory, an unknown application folder, or a randomly named location, do not restore it simply because its filename matches.
After a legitimate quarantine event, reinstall the Print Management capability and run DISM/SFC rather than copying the quarantined file manually.
Fix 5: Verify the file, path, architecture, and signature
If a copy of the file exists, inspect it before doing anything with it.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - If the file is not there, check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click
pmcsnap.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
- Check the Details tab for the file description and version information.
A missing Digital Signatures tab, an invalid signature, or a copy outside the Windows directory deserves investigation. Do not assume a file is safe because it has a familiar filename.

If the error appears only in a custom program, use Microsoft Process Explorer to identify which process is loading the file and which path it requests. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of pmcsnap.dll, not necessarily the named DLL itself.
Fix 6: Restart the Print Spooler and inspect printer components
This is not a replacement for restoring pmcsnap.dll, but it can clear a related Print Spooler problem.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try opening Print Management again.
If the service will not start, check Event Viewer for errors under the Windows printing or service logs. Avoid deleting printer-driver folders or registry entries unless you know exactly which driver is damaged.
If a printer problem began after a driver installation:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Driver problems can affect the surrounding printer infrastructure, but a printer driver is not the normal owner of pmcsnap.dll.
Hunting through several printer models and driver packages can be tedious, especially when Windows has stale entries from old hardware. Do not download or blindly register the DLL
Avoid DLL download sites and random file mirrors. A replacement can contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong x86 or x64 architecture, have missing dependencies, or simply hide the underlying component-store problem.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 pmcsnap.dll
regsvr32 is a registration tool for DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. It does not repair corruption, download dependencies, or restore a missing Windows component. Microsoft documents its behavior in the regsvr32 command reference.

An archived Microsoft procedure used:
regsvr32 /u pmcsnap.dll
as part of removing a legacy Print Management Administration Pack. That historical uninstall procedure does not make registration the normal cure for a missing or damaged file.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery if repair still fails
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC cannot restore the component, the installation or storage may be damaged.
Before using recovery options:
- Back up personal files.
- Record installed applications and printer settings.
- Disconnect unnecessary external drives.
- Check whether the issue began after a recent update or software installation.
Then consider:
- System Restore, if a suitable restore point exists.
- Removing a recently installed problematic update.
- Windows’ repair-reinstallation option.
- A matching Windows installation source when DISM requests source files.

FAQ
Is pmcsnap.dll malware?
Not by itself. A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is consistent with the Print Management component. A copy in a temporary folder, an unknown application directory, or a user-writable location should be investigated.
