One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchwowfax.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because wowfax.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “Error loading wowfax.dll.” The safest fix is to identify the old program or startup entry calling this legacy fax component, then repair or remove that program instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The 60-second answer
wowfax.dll is a genuine legacy Microsoft Windows file associated with Windows 3.1-compatible fax-driver support. It belongs to the older Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP fax stack, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a modern game runtime.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the error usually means one of these things:
- An old application still expects the file.
- A damaged migration or incomplete installation left behind an obsolete reference.
- Antivirus software quarantined a legitimate legacy file.
- A startup entry, scheduled task, or old service is trying to load it.
- The message names
wowfax.dll, but a dependency of that DLL is actually missing.
Do not copy a random download into System32 or SysWOW64. First identify what is requesting the file.

What wowfax.dll is
The file is described as a Windows 3.1 Compatible Fax Driver DLL. It was part of the compatibility layer that allowed older fax software and Win16-era components to work with Windows fax functionality.
Microsoft’s historical Fax Service documentation covers Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 fax functionality. Windows XP treated Fax Services as an optional component rather than a default installation. You can review the historical Microsoft documentation for Fax Service.
Important distinctions:
wowfax.dllis a 32-bit legacy component.- There is no verified modern Microsoft standalone download or current 64-bit redistributable for it.
- It is not a general-purpose Windows runtime.
- It is not normally repaired by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not establish this file as a normal standalone dependency for modern applications.
The file may be legitimate in an older Windows installation, but a copy found in an unexpected application folder still needs to be checked in context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the error appears on Windows 10 or 11
An old program is loading it at startup
A legacy fax utility, printer package, document-management application, installer, or compatibility component may have registered wowfax.dll years ago. Uninstalling the main application can leave behind a startup entry or scheduled task.
This explains why the error may appear even when you never use faxing. Windows is not necessarily trying to open a fax program; it may simply be executing an obsolete command during sign-in.
A migration or cleanup removed part of the component
The message can follow a failed Windows reinstall, disk problem, cleanup utility, incomplete application removal, or partial system migration. If several unrelated Windows files are also missing, suspect a broader installation or storage problem rather than one isolated DLL.
Antivirus software quarantined the file
Security software may quarantine a legacy file because it is old, unsigned, or loaded by an unfamiliar program. That does not automatically prove malware, and restoring it does not automatically make it safe.
Check the antivirus quarantine and detection history before restoring anything.
The named file is present, but a dependency is missing
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wowfax.dll itself is absent. Windows can show the same message when a DLL required by wowfax.dll cannot load.
That is another reason a random replacement download often fails.

Fix 1: Identify the program calling wowfax.dll
Do this before replacing files.
Check the error dialog
Read the complete message and note:
- The executable named in the title or body
- The folder path shown
- Whether the error appears during startup or only when opening one program
- Whether it says “loading,” “starting,” or “module could not be found”
If the message names an application, repair or reinstall that application from its official developer installer.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log from the right-hand panel.
- Filter for recent Error events.
- Look for entries created at the same time as the
wowfax.dllmessage.
Open an event and record the faulting application name, faulting module, and any displayed path. If the application is old and no longer needed, uninstalling it is safer than restoring the DLL.
Check startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Sort by Status or Startup impact.
- Disable only an entry you can associate with the error or an obsolete fax application.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling an entry is safer than deleting registry keys. If the message disappears, identify the parent application before deciding whether to uninstall it.
Check scheduled tasks
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that run at logon or startup.
- Open suspicious tasks and inspect the Actions tab.
- Look for an executable or command that references
wowfax.dllor an old fax-related application. - Disable the task temporarily and restart.
Do not disable Microsoft tasks at random. If you cannot identify the task, leave it enabled and repair or remove the associated application instead.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the calling application
This is the most appropriate fix when wowfax.dll is requested by a specific program on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and allow Windows to finish.
- Restart the computer and test the program.
If Repair is not available or does not help:
- Return to the application’s entry in Installed apps.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application developer’s official website or your organization’s approved software source.
- Install the correct version.
- Run the application again.
If the application is obsolete and you no longer need it, uninstall it and remove its confirmed startup entry or scheduled task. That is the correct resolution for an orphaned reference.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the error appears to involve Windows itself, several protected files are damaged, or the file was part of an older Windows component installation. These commands cannot add a component that the current version of Windows never shipped.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then read the result.
A successful repair is indicated by a message saying Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the result says no integrity violations were found but the application still fails, the missing component probably belongs to the old application rather than the current Windows image.

- Convenient, easy-to-operate faxing

- 9,600 BPS fax modem transmits at about 15 seconds per page
- 512 KB memory stores up to 25 pages
- 50-Sheet paper capacity
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can become guesswork when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the program that owns wowfax.dll remains the definitive fix when the file is application-specific.
For Microsoft’s supported procedure, see Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Fix 4: Reinstall Windows XP Fax Services when repairing an XP computer
If the affected computer actually runs Windows XP, repair the optional Fax Services component rather than downloading wowfax.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Select Fax Services.
- Click Next.
- Insert matching Windows XP installation media if prompted.
- Allow setup to copy the files.
- Restart the computer.
- Test Fax Console or the program that reported the error.
Use installation media matching the installed Windows XP edition and service-pack level as closely as possible. Do not mix files from unrelated Windows versions or third-party archives.
On a current Windows installation, this XP procedure does not create a supported modern wowfax.dll package. If Windows 10 or 11 reports the error, return to identifying the calling program.
Fix 5: Check drivers only when the caller is hardware-related
wowfax.dll itself is not a printer or modem driver. However, an old fax application may depend on a printer, scanner, modem, or multifunction-device package.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Modems, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers as applicable.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under General.
- Use Update driver, or uninstall the device and restart Windows so it can be detected again.
- Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s current driver for your Windows version.
When several devices have stale drivers, hunting through driver pages and guessing which package matters can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and it cannot replace repairing the old application that specifically requests wowfax.dll.

Why regsvr32 wowfax.dll usually does not help
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 wowfax.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents that requirement in its regsvr32 command reference and its explanation of DllRegisterServer.
A fax-driver support DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component. Registration may produce another error without restoring the missing component. Repair the Windows feature or the calling application instead.

Downloading wowfax.dll from an archive is risky because the file may have:
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible Windows version
- Altered or malicious contents
- Missing dependencies
- A misleading filename
- No trustworthy Microsoft provenance
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also mask the real problem and cause version conflicts. There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download page for this file.

If antivirus quarantined the file
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history or Quarantine.
- Find the detection associated with
wowfax.dll. - Note the original path and the process that requested it.
- Do not restore the file merely because an application stopped working.
- Update security definitions and run a full scan.
- If malware is suspected, run an offline scan and repair or reinstall the affected program.
Restore a quarantined file only when its location, source, and role are verified and the system is otherwise clean. If the file came from an old application rather than Windows, reinstall that application from its official source instead.
When to use System Restore or reinstall Windows
Use System Restore when:
- The error began immediately after a known driver, cleanup, or software change.
- Restore points are available.
- You have backed up important personal files.
If many Windows components are missing, installation media was damaged, the disk is reporting errors, or repairs repeatedly fail, a repair installation or clean Windows installation may be more reliable. Back up personal data first and reinstall applications from trusted official installers afterward.
FAQ
Is wowfax.dll malware?
Not by name alone. It is a genuine legacy Microsoft filename, but malware can use familiar names. The file path, digital signature, antivirus result, and calling process matter.
Is it part of Windows Fax and Scan on Windows 11?
The historical file is associated with older Windows fax compatibility components. Current Windows Fax and Scan documentation does not establish wowfax.dll as a modern standalone dependency. Identify the application making the request.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Normally no. wowfax.dll is a legacy fax compatibility component, not one of those runtime libraries.
Is there a 64-bit version?
No verified 64-bit build was established. Treat it as a 32-bit legacy DLL and do not substitute a similarly named 64-bit file.
Why does the error appear even though I never fax?
An obsolete startup entry, scheduled task, printer utility, or leftover application can request the file during sign-in without any deliberate fax activity.
