If Windows says pmruntime.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, the safest first step is to repair or reinstall the InDesign installation that owns it.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file repository or copy one into C:WindowsSystem32. InDesign needs a matching copy alongside its other program files, and reported versions vary between older and newer releases.

| Question | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|
What is pmruntime.dll? |
A private Adobe InDesign module, also shown as PMRuntime.dll |
| Is it part of Windows? | No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component |
| Where should it be? | Inside the affected InDesign installation folder |
| Which applications use it? | Primarily Adobe InDesign, including older Creative Suite and Creative Cloud releases |
| Should you register it? | Normally no. It is not known to be a COM self-registering DLL |
| Is one file size or version universal? | No. The file varies by InDesign release |
An InDesign installation may place the file under a path resembling:

Missing-file error
Messages such as these usually mean the loader could not find the expected file:
pmruntime.dll is missingpmruntime.dll was not foundCannot find pmruntime.dllThe program can't start because pmruntime.dll is missing from your computer
This commonly follows an incomplete update, damaged installation, or antivirus quarantine.

Faulting-module crash
Event Viewer may instead report:
Faulting application name: InDesign.exe
Faulting module name: PMRuntime.dll
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Faulting module path: C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe InDesign CC 2017PMRuntime.dll
This does not mean the file is absent. It means InDesign loaded the module and then crashed in, or while interacting with, that module. Repairing the application is still the correct first response, but copying in another DLL is not.
Access or compatibility error
Messages about access being denied, an invalid image, or a file not being designed to run on Windows can indicate permissions, corruption, a dependency problem, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Adobe InDesign
This is the most likely solution because the file belongs to InDesign and must match its companion modules.
- Save your work and close InDesign.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps and then All Apps.
- Find InDesign.
- Open the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts, then restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again and install InDesign.
If Creative Cloud offers a repair or update option, use that before removing InDesign. If the Creative Cloud desktop app itself appears damaged, use its repair option first. A clean reinstall is preferable to copying a DLL from another computer or release.
After installation, launch InDesign normally. Check that a new PMRuntime.dll exists inside the InDesign folder, not in System32 or SysWOW64.
Rank #2
If the reinstall fails, temporarily check whether security software blocked an installer component, then retry the official installation. Persistent Creative Cloud installation corruption may require Adobe’s official Cleaner Tool. Use it carefully, run it as administrator, restart Windows, and reinstall Creative Cloud and InDesign.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender or antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an application file after an update or a false detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
PMRuntime.dll, InDesign, or an Adobe installation file. - Expand the event and review its location, detection name, and source.
- If the file clearly came from your legitimate Adobe installation, follow your security product’s restore or allow process.
- Run a scan of the Adobe installation folder.
- Repair or reinstall InDesign afterward if the file was removed or altered.
Restoring a quarantined file can trigger the same detection again. Do not restore it merely because its filename matches. If the location is unexpected, the detection remains active, or the Adobe installation is not trustworthy, remove the item and reinstall InDesign from Creative Cloud instead.
Fix 3: Reset InDesign preferences
Preference corruption is more relevant when InDesign crashes during startup even though PMRuntime.dll is present.
- Close InDesign.
- Hold Shift + Ctrl + Alt.
- While holding the keys, start InDesign.
- Confirm that you want to delete the preference files.
- Test the application.
Resetting preferences can remove custom settings, workspace changes, and other local configuration. It does not replace the DLL. If InDesign still crashes, return to the reinstall step and record the exact faulting module shown in Event Viewer.
Fix 4: Check the exact path and permissions
A normal InDesign user should not need to run the program permanently as administrator.
To inspect the file:
- Open Creative Cloud and locate InDesign.
- Use its installation or location controls to open the program folder.
- Search for
PMRuntime.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
- Compare the location with the InDesign installation directory.
If the file exists but InDesign works only when launched as administrator, test permissions instead of adopting that workaround permanently.
You can also test a separate Windows profile:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts and then Other users.
- Add a local test user.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch InDesign.
If it works in the new profile, the original user’s permissions or profile data may be damaged. Copying the DLL will not correct that condition.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit InDesign installation, or the reverse. Windows uses different compatibility paths for 32-bit processes, but placing a file in System32 or SysWOW64 does not make it compatible.
If the error names another file, that file may be the actual missing dependency. Examples include:
MSVCP100.dll
MSVCR100.dll
VCRUNTIME140.dll
Only then should you investigate the corresponding Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. Install the architecture required by the affected application. Older InDesign builds can depend on older Microsoft runtime components, but Visual C++ is not the primary fix for a missing PMRuntime.dll.
Do not install every redistributable package at random. If reinstalling InDesign restores the complete application folder, it is usually safer and more effective than assembling dependencies manually.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Use Windows repair commands when several applications show unusual failures, Windows servicing has failed, or the InDesign installer cannot complete. These commands repair Windows components, not normally a private Adobe DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the InDesign repair or reinstall again.
DISM should normally run before SFC. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run the two commands again, then install pending Windows updates. A successful Windows scan does not prove that PMRuntime.dll itself is fixed; test InDesign afterward.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM can be time-consuming when the real issue is the Adobe installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while the repair is completed by the full version; reinstalling InDesign remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

A graphics or printer driver can contribute to application crashes, but a PMRuntime.dll message does not by itself prove that a driver is responsible.
Check drivers only after repairing InDesign:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Printers, and any category related to the feature involved in the crash.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test InDesign.
For a graphics problem, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace PMRuntime.dll as a substitute for updating a driver.
Rank #4
Manually checking many devices can mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is completed by the full version; it is not a replacement for repairing InDesign when the Adobe installation is damaged.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a known system change
If InDesign worked and stopped immediately after a known installation, security, or system change, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore rolls back applications, settings, and system state. It may remove changes made after the selected restore point. Use it only when the timing is clear, and repair or reinstall InDesign afterward if necessary.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL websites can provide malware, the wrong InDesign release, the wrong architecture, or an altered file. Even a clean file may not match InDesign.exe and its companion modules. Use Creative Cloud to restore the complete application.
Do not copy it into Windows folders
Do not place pmruntime.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows components and shared system files. Copying a private Adobe module there can create version conflicts and unsafe DLL-loading behavior.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. PMRuntime.dll is an InDesign application module, not a documented COM server.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Running this command is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 PMRuntime.dll
If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that result does not identify a new problem. Repair InDesign instead.
Do not use Windows Features as a guess
Turning random Windows Features on or off will not normally restore a private Adobe module. Use Windows Features only when a separate error specifically names a Windows component or framework.
If the error continues
Record these details before contacting Adobe support or continuing troubleshooting:

- Whether a new Windows profile has the same problem
- Whether the issue began after an update or system change
To view the crash record, open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs, choose Application, and find the InDesign error at the relevant time. This evidence distinguishes a genuinely missing file from a crash, dependency failure, permission problem, or architecture mismatch.
FAQ
Is pmruntime.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Adobe InDesign and should normally remain in the relevant InDesign installation directory.
Can I copy it from another computer?
No. Another computer may have a different InDesign release, architecture, or companion modules. Repair or reinstall the affected installation.
Why does Event Viewer name the file when it is still present?
A faulting-module entry means the module was involved in the crash. It does not necessarily mean the module is missing.

Only when the error names a Microsoft runtime DLL, the installer reports a runtime dependency, or dependency inspection confirms one. It is not the default fix for PMRuntime.dll.
What if InDesign belongs to an older Creative Suite release?
Use the official installer or repair route for that installed product. Do not mix a DLL from an older or newer InDesign release.
What if the file appears in a game or another packaged application?
Use that application’s official repair or launcher file-verification feature. A filename alone does not establish that the application uses Adobe InDesign’s copy.
