PocketSprite: Hands-On With the Tiny Game Boy-Shaped Emulator

PocketSprite’s miniature Game Boy-like design made it the subject of Hackaday’s 2018 hands-on. Here’s what that review reported—and why the Game Boy Micro is the smallest official Nintendo model.

PocketSprite is the tiny handheld emulator at the center of Hackaday’s 2018 “Hands On With The Smallest Game Boy Ever Made.” It resembles a miniature Game Boy, but it is not a Nintendo console: it emulates several older systems rather than playing cartridges. The official Nintendo model described as the smallest Game Boy is the Game Boy Micro.

What is the PocketSprite?

In Brian Benchoff’s February 12, 2018 Hackaday hands-on article, PocketSprite is presented as a keychain-sized, ESP32-based emulator. Its small controls, speaker and screen give it a Game Boy-like shape, but “Game Boy” in the headline refers to that look and its emulation context—not Nintendo manufacture or native cartridge compatibility.

The project’s hardware was first presented at the 2016 Hackaday Superconference and was made open source. Benchoff reports that Jeroen Domburg, known as Sprite_TM, worked with Steve K and TeamPocket to develop the prototype into a product. The revised enclosure moved away from a Game Boy Color-like case to a simpler rectangular design.

What can PocketSprite emulate?

The 2018 review says the product revision retained its ESP32 and added Game Gear emulation to earlier Game Boy and Game Boy Color support. It also describes Sega Master System emulation. The article points to Gnuboy for Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and modified SMSPlus software for Game Gear and Sega Master System.

Is PocketSprite the smallest Game Boy ever made?

That depends on what “Game Boy” means. PocketSprite is a tiny third-party emulator styled like a Game Boy; it is not part of Nintendo’s Game Boy line. Nintendojo’s history of the Game Boy identifies the Game Boy Micro, launched in 2005, as the smallest official Game Boy model.

The two devices are different kinds of hardware, so the available sources do not establish a measured size comparison between them. PocketSprite’s keychain-sized description should not be turned into a claim that it is physically smaller than the Micro.

What should you check before looking for a PocketSprite?

The 2018 coverage establishes what the device was reported to include at that time; it does not establish current stock, later specifications, or ongoing manufacturer support. A marketplace listing should therefore be checked for the exact model and revision rather than assumed to match the review.
