Pokémon Ash Gray is a Pokémon FireRed-based fan game distributed as a patch, not as a standalone game file. To start, apply the patch to a compatible FireRed base, open the patched game in a Game Boy Advance emulator, and follow the Pallet Town sequence: bedroom scene, Professor Oak’s lab, the three starter Poké Balls, then a second conversation with Oak to receive Pikachu. This guide covers that opening and the version and save cautions that matter before you begin.

Before you start: identify the build

Walkthrough instructions and bug advice can depend on which Ash Gray build you are playing. Denali’s PokéCommunity walkthrough, posted in 2010, documents setup and the opening in Pallet Town but is limited in scope. A separate, unofficial community-maintained bug-fix patch targets Ash Gray beta 4.5.3; it is not an official continuation from Ash Gray’s credited creator, metapod23.

The community patch release specifies a clean Pokémon FireRed (USA) v1.0 base. Its project README identifies that as the original US revision, also called rev 0, and warns that Pokémon FireRed (USA, Europe) (Rev 1) is different and will not produce the intended result. Check the base revision before patching rather than assuming any FireRed file will work.

How to set up Ash Gray

Ash Gray uses a patching model: the patch is applied to a compatible Pokémon FireRed base, and the resulting game file is opened in a GBA emulator. The community bug-fix release provides an IPS or BPS patch and does not include a ROM. Use a base you are legally entitled to use; the historical download instructions in the old walkthrough should not be treated as current acquisition guidance.

  1. Choose whether to play the original beta 4.5.3 or the separate community bug-fix fork.
  2. For the fork, prepare a clean Pokémon FireRed (USA) v1.0 / original US rev 0 base. Do not substitute the USA, Europe Rev 1 version.
  3. Apply the chosen patch to the compatible base with a patching utility that supports its patch format (IPS or BPS for the community fork).
  4. Open the patched output file in a Game Boy Advance emulator. Keep the unpatched base and a backup of your save separate from the patched output.

Original beta 4.5.3 or community bug-fix fork?

The fork is an unofficial patch for beta 4.5.3, not a new complete edition. Its documentation reports fixes for crashes, softlocks, and Bad Egg-related save corruption, alongside quality changes such as restoring running shoes on maps. The project also notes a trade-off for players who care about RetroAchievements recognition.

Choice What the documentation establishes Important caveat
Original Ash Gray beta 4.5.3 The original beta build; its hash is recognized for RetroAchievements, according to the fork README. The fork release lists crashes, softlocks, and Bad Egg storage corruption among issues it addresses.
Community bug-fix fork Unofficial patch for beta 4.5.3, with reported crash and softlock fixes, Bad Egg storage-corruption mitigation, and selected quality changes. It requires a clean FireRed (USA) v1.0 / original US rev 0 base. The fork hash is not recognized for RetroAchievements.

Protect an existing save before switching

The fork reserves hazardous storage boxes to prevent new placements, but its documentation warns that it does not repair a Pokémon already placed in one of those boxes. If you are moving an existing save to the fork, move Pokémon out of hazardous boxes before patching when possible and preserve a separate save backup. Do not assume applying the patch will repair an affected save.

Pallet Town: get Pikachu and leave town

Denali’s 2010 community walkthrough describes the opening sequence below. Follow the events in order; the second conversation with Oak is what gives you Pikachu.

  1. Check the bedroom Poké Ball. After Oak’s introduction, you are in your room. Interact with the Poké Ball near the desk.
  2. Trigger the bed scene. Stand by the bed pillow and interact with it. After the scene, go downstairs and outside.
  3. Take the route south. A girl initially blocks the way north. Head south and enter the building marked by red posts and a yellow path.
  4. Go upstairs to Oak. After the rival interrupts, go inside and upstairs to Professor Oak.
  5. Inspect all three starter balls. Interact with each of the three Poké Balls, then speak to Oak again. He gives you Pikachu and the Pokédex.
  6. Leave Pallet Town to the north. After exiting, your mother provides the Running Shoes and Fame Checker. Head north to continue.

Know what is intentional and what is a bug

The community fork documentation distinguishes several anime-inspired behaviors from defects. These scripted behaviors are intentional and should not automatically be treated as broken progression:

  • An Official Pokémon Product.
  • HMs are represented as key items.
  • Brock’s scripted first-battle loss is intentional.
  • Pikachu refuses Misty.
  • Charizard disobeys.

By contrast, crashes, softlocks, and Bad Egg storage corruption are among the problems the fork says it addresses. If an issue interrupts progress, first confirm your build and patch compatibility; advice for the fork may not describe the original beta.

How far does Ash Gray go?

Ash Gray is unfinished. The community fork documentation places its endpoint partway through the Orange Islands, around the third Orange League gym. It does not document a complete anime story or full Orange League run, so do not expect the game to carry the player through the entire arc.

Scope of this walkthrough

The available community walkthrough covers the Pallet Town opening and a brief bugs section; it is not a complete route guide for the rest of Ash Gray. The steps above therefore stop where that walkthrough’s documented opening route ends rather than inventing later directions. The version notes are specific to the community fork’s documentation and should not be read as a guarantee that every individual save or emulator will behave identically.
