Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen launched for Nintendo Switch on 27 February 2026. They are separate, download-only games—not physical cartridges or subscription-catalogue titles—and Nintendo says they are playable on both Switch and Switch 2.

When did FireRed and LeafGreen come out on Switch?

The games launched on 27 February 2026, following a Pokémon Presents announcement. “Next week” described the short period between that February announcement and release; it is no longer current. Nintendo presented the releases as part of Pokémon’s 30th-anniversary celebration. Nintendo’s announcement has the original release details.

What are the Switch versions?

These are Switch editions of the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, which first released in Japan in 1996. The games let players encounter the original 151 Pokémon. Nintendo describes them as download-exclusive standalone titles, and lists them as playable across the Switch family, including Switch 2.

Nintendo Support says the Switch games’ contents are broadly the same as the original releases, while noting that some specifications may differ. That does not establish that every technical detail is identical. Switch 2 players can also use GameChat, according to Nintendo Support’s FAQ.

Which version should you buy?

The available official information does not establish a detailed list of version-exclusive content, so there is no sound basis here for a feature-by-feature recommendation. Choose FireRed or LeafGreen according to which title you prefer, or buy both if you want to own both standalone games. They are separate digital purchases through the Nintendo eShop.

Can you transfer Pokémon to Pokémon HOME?

The Pokémon Company announced that linkage with Pokémon HOME would begin in October 2026. Transfers from either Switch game to HOME are one-way: a Pokémon sent to HOME cannot be returned to the game it came from. Check The Pokémon Company’s announcement for its connection details.

How many copies have sold?

Nintendo reported more than 4 million units in the first six weeks after the 27 February 2026 release. The figure is combined global cumulative sell-through for FireRed and LeafGreen together, not a per-game total or a lifetime sales figure. Nintendo’s 8 May 2026 investor material gives the milestone.
