Their special-card lineup includes monochromatic Black and White Rare (BWR) versions of Zekrom ex, Reshiram ex and Victini, alongside Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare cards for Unova Pokémon. The English expansions launched July 18, 2025.
What was revealed about Black Bolt and White Flare?
The Pokémon Company International announced the pair as a return to Unova, with both expansions highlighting all 156 Pokémon first discovered in the region. The announcement showed examples including Hilda, Emboar and Volcarona, and noted that more cards would be revealed. Hilda also made her first English Pokémon TCG appearance in this release. The official announcement gave July 18, 2025 as the English release date.
The special illustration program is a major part of the sets: the English set guide says every Unova Pokémon receives an Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare treatment. The result is a pair focused not only on the region’s familiar Pokémon, but also on collectible alternate illustrations.
Which cards are Black and White Rare?
BWR stands for Black and White Rare, a monochromatic rarity treatment reported for the Japanese sets. The BWR lineup includes Zekrom ex and Reshiram ex, with Victini also appearing as a BWR card. The English set guide lists the Victini promo as #171 in Black Bolt and #172 in White Flare. Those are English promo numbers; Japanese card numbering and release details are separate.

- A great gift idea for the Pokemon fan in your life.
For Japanese context, the Japanese sets were reported to have 172 regular main-set cards and special illustration treatments for the 156 Unova Pokémon. Do not use those main-set figures or Japanese card lists as a checklist for the English editions.
How do the English card lists differ from the Japanese sets?
The English lists were reshuffled relative to the Japanese releases. According to PokéBeach’s English set guide, the Chandelure and Mandibuzz lines moved from Black Bolt to White Flare, while the Klinklang and Braviary lines moved from White Flare to Black Bolt. Some Illustration Rare cards also moved into promo products.

What variants and collection size should English collectors expect?
English cards include regular reverse holos plus Poké Ball and Master Ball reverse-holo patterns. The guide also describes a horizontal holofoil paper pattern associated with the earlier Black & White era. Because the parallel variants add cards beyond the standard set lists, PokéBeach estimates that completing both English master sets would require more than 800 cards. That is the specialist guide’s collection estimate, not an official Pokémon statistic.

The English special-set packs were sold in collection products rather than as individual packs or booster boxes. Pokémon’s Booster Bundle page describes a bundle containing six packs from either Black Bolt or White Flare. A bundle is a pack-focused format; it does not promise a particular card or pull.
