Each is a Switch release of the 2004 Game Boy Advance remake, costs $19.99 at the U.S. price Nintendo announced, and can be played without Nintendo Switch Online. The games have local wireless multiplayer but no online play, and Nintendo says they will not get physical releases.
What are FireRed and LeafGreen?
FireRed and LeafGreen remake the original Kanto adventures first released in Japan in 1996 as Pokémon Red and Green. The 2004 Game Boy Advance games revisit that region, add the Sevii Islands, and feature the original 151 Pokémon. Nintendo highlights turn-based battles and the classic soundtrack, alongside GBA-era features including abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and a choice of player-character gender.

The Switch releases bring those GBA remakes to Nintendo’s current systems; they are not new, separate remakes of the original Game Boy games.
How much do they cost, and are there physical copies?
Nintendo of America’s February 20, 2026 announcement listed a U.S. suggested retail price of $19.99 for each language edition. That is the announced U.S. price, not a guaranteed current price in every region or store. Nintendo announced availability through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store, with select retailers also carrying the games during launch week.
#1 Best Overall
- Don the role of a Pokémon Trainer as you travel through Kanto
- Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
- Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
- See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
- Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one
Both games are digital-only. Nintendo Support states, “The games will not receive physical releases.” Check the eShop listing for the price and language edition available in your region before purchasing.
Which version should you choose?
FireRed and LeafGreen are sold separately, so choose the version you want rather than expecting a bundle. Nintendo’s announcement confirms both include the original 151 Pokémon and the Sevii Islands, but does not list the version-exclusive Pokémon or other differences. If you are choosing based on exclusives, check a dedicated game reference for the specific Pokémon you want before buying.

Also confirm the language edition: Nintendo releases each supported language as a separate version, and the game does not let you switch languages in its settings.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
No. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to purchase or play either game. Nintendo lists both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as compatible platforms. The Switch 2 listing describes compatibility, not a separate native Switch 2 edition.
Rank #3
- Meet countless characters from the beloved series
- High-end visuals, modern resolutions and carefully polished gameplay
- Brand new horde mode multiplayer for up to two players, online and splitscreen
How does multiplayer work?
There is no online play. Instead, the games use local wireless through the Pokémon Wireless Club for trading, battles, and a minigame. Nintendo Support says the player can connect with up to four other players. On Switch, local wireless takes the place of the Game Link Cable or Wireless Adapter used for the original GBA games.
Nintendo notes that local multiplayer can require additional compatible systems and games. A controller by itself is not enough to join another player’s game.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures

- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Which language edition is available?
Nintendo of America lists separate English, French, and Spanish versions. Language availability varies by region, and each language is a separate purchase rather than an in-game option. Check the store page carefully to make sure the edition matches your preferred language before completing the purchase.
When will Pokémon HOME support arrive?
Nintendo’s store listing says Pokémon HOME support begins in October 2026, but does not give an exact day. The listing also describes a special Celebi Mystery Gift for completing the FireRed Pokédex in HOME. Check Nintendo’s current HOME or game notices for the activation date and redemption details; the listing alone does not establish that support is already active.
