Yes—on a Nintendo Switch 2, Handheld Mode Boost lets compatible original Nintendo Switch games run as if they were in TV Mode while you play handheld. It is a system setting, not a game patch, and Nintendo warns that some functionality may be affected. It does not guarantee a specific resolution or frame-rate increase for every game.
What Handheld Mode Boost does
Nintendo added Handheld Mode Boost in Switch 2 system software version 22.0.0, released March 16, 2026. Nintendo describes the setting this way: “Handheld Mode Boost will cause compatible Switch software to run as if in TV Mode, so certain functionality may be affected.” The setting changes how compatible Switch software runs while the Switch 2 is being played in handheld mode; it does not update the game itself. “As if in TV Mode” describes the game’s operating mode, not a universal promise of sharper graphics or higher frame rates. The update notes do not specify a uniform resolution or performance result across titles. The effect depends on the game, its compatibility, and how it uses TV Mode behavior.
How to turn it on or off
Update your Switch 2 system software, then use the system setting. In version 23.0.0, released September 9, 2026, Nintendo added a way to toggle Handheld Mode Boost from Quick Settings. Nintendo also added support for using other controllers while Joy-Con 2 controllers are attached. For the current control path and system requirements, consult Nintendo’s system update history.

Which Switch games work with it?
Handheld Mode Boost applies to compatible original Switch software, not necessarily every Switch game. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the systems have different hardware. For third-party games, Nintendo recommends checking with the publisher for title-specific compatibility details. Its Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information is the place to check the current listing.
Because Nintendo warns that certain functionality may be affected when a compatible game runs as if in TV Mode, do not assume every title’s controls or behavior will be unchanged. Check the game’s compatibility notes and publisher information if you encounter a problem. The available system notes do not establish specific control or performance effects for individual games.

How it differs from game updates and Switch 2 Edition upgrades
Improved play on Switch 2 can come from different mechanisms. They are not interchangeable, and a Switch 2 Edition upgrade is not required to use Handheld Mode Boost.

What to check if a game does not behave as expected
- Confirm that the Switch 2 system software is current and that Handheld Mode Boost is enabled in the system settings or Quick Settings.
- Check Nintendo’s compatibility listing for the game. For third-party titles, consult the publisher’s compatibility details as well.
- If a title’s behavior or controls change, try disabling the setting and compare. Nintendo’s warning about affected functionality means the best choice may vary by game.
- Check whether the title has a separate free update or Switch 2 Edition upgrade, but treat those as independent of Handheld Mode Boost.
