The main Pokémon releases set in Hoenn are Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. Ruby and Sapphire are the original Game Boy Advance pair; Emerald is a separate expanded version; Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are Nintendo 3DS/2DS remakes.
Which Pokémon games are set in Hoenn?
Hoenn’s main-series releases fall into three groups. The first two are the paired originals, the third is an expanded GBA version, and the last two remake the original pair for Nintendo 3DS and 2DS. This guide covers those five versions, not every spin-off or other game that features Hoenn.

What is the difference between Ruby and Sapphire?
Both games follow the Hoenn adventure, but the version you choose changes the opposing team and some Pokémon encounters. In Ruby, Team Magma seeks to expand the land and pursues Groudon. In Sapphire, Team Aqua seeks to expand the sea and pursues Kyogre. The Pokémon Company also notes version-specific Pokémon availability, making the pair’s differences relevant if you want particular creatures or to trade with someone playing the other version.

These are shared elements of the original games rather than reasons to treat one version as a different region or a wholly separate adventure. The Pokémon Company: Ruby and Sapphire.
What does Emerald add?
Pokémon Emerald is a distinct Game Boy Advance version based on the Ruby/Sapphire story, not simply a third name for the same release. Its story brings both Team Magma and Team Aqua into the conflict, which involves Groudon and Kyogre.

Nintendo says purchases through the Nintendo 3DS family eShop ended on 27 March 2023. Separately, Nintendo’s Japanese 3DS service notice says internet-based exchange and friend voice chat ended on 9 April 2024. The first date concerns eShop purchases; the second concerns specified online services, so they should not be mistaken for the same shutdown.
