For raids, the best attacker is the one whose type and moves exploit the current boss’s weaknesses—not necessarily the Pokémon at the top of an overall ranking. This guide focuses on Gym and Raid Battles, explains how to choose a moveset, and separates a dated overall-ranking example from matchup-specific advice. Pokémon GO attack balance can change, so treat rankings as snapshots, not permanent answers.
Updated October 8, 2026. Recommendations below distinguish official battle mechanics from community rankings. No official, universal ranking of the best attackers exists in the sources cited here.

How to choose the best attacker for a raid
- Check the raid boss’s type and weaknesses. Pick an attacker whose move types are effective against that specific boss. A general ranking cannot replace this matchup check.
- Compare the relevant moveset. Pokémon generally use a Fast Attack and a Charged Attack. Fast Attacks deal damage and build energy for Charged Attacks. A Pokémon’s name alone does not tell you how well it will perform; verify the moves it can use and the attacks recommended for the target. See the Pokémon.com attack strategy guide and the Pokémon GO Help Center’s type-effectiveness explanation.
- Account for same-type attack benefit. When an Electric-type Pokémon uses an Electric-type Charged Attack and a non-Electric-type Charged Attack with the same damage output, the Electric-type move deals more damage, according to the Help Center. Still prioritize effectiveness against the boss; same-type benefit does not make every same-type move the right counter.
- Consider the ranking’s metric and assumptions. Damage-focused rankings may favor fast damage, while other methods account for durability or downtime after a team faints. Mega and Shadow status, move availability, weather, level, and team context can also affect the comparison. Community tools do not necessarily use the same scoring method.
For official battle-system changes, consult Niantic’s Raid and Battle Systems Update. Niantic says the update changes “the damage outputs, energy generation, and durations of certain Pokémon attacks for raids and Gym battles only.” Because these parameters can change, recheck current recommendations after relevant game updates.
Best Pokémon GO attackers: what an overall ranking can—and cannot—tell you
Overall rankings are useful for identifying powerful options, but they do not answer which Pokémon is best against a particular raid boss. Their order depends on the publisher’s metric and assumptions. The examples below are dated snapshots from community sources, not official rankings or directly comparable score tables.
#1 Best Overall
- The packaging is Japanese, but item works the same as the US version.
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
| Ranking source and date | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Dittobase, updated October 6, 2026 | Mega Rayquaza with Dragon Tail and Dragon Ascent is ranked first overall. | Dittobase uses eDPS, which its page describes as incorporating sustained damage and relobby downtime. This is one method’s overall result, not a universal verdict for every raid matchup. |
| PokeXperience, updated September 5, 2026 | Its top tier names Mega Rayquaza, Shadow Regigigas, Eternatus, and Mega Mewtwo Y. | The page presents DPS- and TDO-related metrics. Its lineup and scoring should not be merged with Dittobase’s or treated as if both sources used identical assumptions. |
For a specific raid, use a boss- or type-focused counter list and check that the listed Fast and Charged Attacks are available to your Pokémon. A broad “best attackers in Pokémon GO” list is a starting point, not a substitute for that matchup.
Best attackers by type or raid boss
There is no single type-by-type moveset table established by the cited sources that can be reproduced here with verified attacker and move details for each matchup. Avoid treating a generic type list as an authoritative current counter chart. Instead, look up the particular boss and compare recommendations from a type-based resource such as Pokemons.io’s attacker tables with the game’s current move availability and official type-effectiveness guidance.
Rank #2
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
- Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)
- Confirm the boss’s type and the type of each recommended attack.
- Check both Fast and Charged Attacks; a listed Pokémon with a different moveset may not match the recommendation.
- Note whether the list treats Mega or Shadow forms separately and what metric it uses.
- Use the page’s stated update date. A ranking may become outdated after changes to attack damage, energy generation, or duration.
Why raid movesets differ from GO Battle League movesets
This guide’s rankings and advice concern Gym and Raid Battles. Pokémon GO attacks do not function identically in Trainer Battles, so raid recommendations should not be carried over as GO Battle League advice. For PvP, assess moves in the Trainer Battle format and use recommendations specifically built for that mode; the raid eDPS example above does not establish the best PvP moveset.

Recheck your raid roster when Niantic changes battle mechanics or when a ranking source updates its data. Changes to damage output, energy generation, and attack duration can shift the value of a moveset, while a new boss changes which types are useful. Record the source and date when relying on a ranking so you can tell whether it still reflects the current game.
