Pokémon GO Favorite vs. Tag: Which Should You Use to Organize Pokémon?

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Favorite for protection and Tag for organization. Mark an individual Pokémon as a Favorite when your priority is avoiding an accidental transfer. Create a Tag when you want a named, reusable category that can be searched and filtered. They are not competing settings: a Pokémon can be favorited for protection and assigned to one or more Tags for your own filing system.

Niantic documents these as separate tools. Its Tagging your Pokémon Inventory help page describes Tags as a way to categorize and access Pokémon according to characteristics you care about. Its Searching & Filtering your Pokémon Inventory page explains Favorites and the search syntax for both features.

Favorite and Tag solve different inventory problems

A Favorite is attached to one Pokémon you consider worth protecting. Tap the star on that Pokémon’s profile to mark it. Searching your Pokémon inventory for favorite returns the Pokémon carrying that mark. Niantic says this protection marker will help make sure your favorite Pokémon cannot be transferred away. That wording matters: Favorite is a safeguard against an accidental transfer, not a promise that every possible game action is permanently blocked.

A Tag is a player-defined category. You give it a name, select a background color, and apply it to whichever Pokémon fit your system. You can then tap the Tag to filter the collection or search for it with a hash sign and its name. A Tag describes membership in a group; it does not, by itself, indicate that any one Pokémon is more valuable or protected.

Because the functions are distinct, using both usually gives the clearest result. Favorite the individual Pokémon you never want to send away casually, then add Tags that explain why you keep it or what you plan to do with it.

Favorite vs. Tag at a glance

Need Favorite Tag
Documented role Marks a Pokémon as a favorite to help prevent it being transferred away. See Niantic’s inventory-search instructions. Categorizes Pokémon and makes them easier to access according to characteristics chosen by the player. See Niantic’s tagging instructions.
Scope An individual Pokémon you value. A named group containing selected Pokémon.
How you retrieve it Enter favorite in the Pokémon search field. Tap a Tag in the Tags header or search for # followed by the Tag name, such as #battle.
How it is assigned Tap the star on a Pokémon’s profile. Create a Tag, then use Add Pokémon to select the members.
Access condition The cited inventory-search help does not state a level gate for Favorites. Niantic says Tags are available to Trainers at Level 15 and above.
Best question to ask “Could I regret transferring this particular Pokémon?” “Which Pokémon belong in this reusable category?”

When Favorite is the right choice

Protect a single prized Pokémon

Choose Favorite when the risk is individual and the remedy is simple: mark that Pokémon so it is visibly identified before you perform inventory cleanup. This is useful for a Pokémon whose identity matters to you regardless of its category, such as one you want to keep for sentimental reasons or a particular specimen you are still evaluating.

The protection is attached to the Pokémon, not to a search result or a Tag definition. If you later rename, edit, or delete a Tag, the Favorite remains a separate marker. That separation lets you reorganize categories without losing the warning attached to the individual Pokémon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Favorite search as a safety check

Before a large transfer session, enter favorite in the Pokémon inventory search. The result is a focused list of everything you marked. Review that list before proceeding, especially if you are clearing space in several batches. The search term is documented by Niantic; there is no need to remember a custom Tag name for this particular check.

What Favorite does not do

Favorite is not a classification system. It cannot tell you whether a Pokémon belongs to a raid group, a trade list, a collection theme, or any other purpose. It also does not provide a color, a custom label, or a way to divide favorites into subgroups. If you need those functions, add Tags as well.

When Tag is the right choice

Build a reusable category

Choose Tag when you want to gather Pokémon by a characteristic or future action that you define. Possible names include categories such as battle, trade, or to-evolve; these are examples of naming systems, not categories required by the game. The useful property is that the label remains available for filtering after you leave the current inventory view.

Create a Tag

  1. Open the Pokémon inventory and go to the Tags page.
  2. Tap the plus button.
  3. Enter the Tag name.
  4. Choose a background color.
  5. Tap Done.

Niantic’s help page describes this as the creation flow. Pick names that you can recognize in the search field later; short, distinct names reduce the chance of selecting the wrong category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add Pokémon to the Tag

  1. Open the new Tag.
  2. Choose Add Pokémon.
  3. Select the Pokémon that belong in the category.
  4. Tap Select to apply the Tag to those choices.

A Tag is a group of selected Pokémon, so the same Pokémon can be included in categories that serve different purposes. For example, one Pokémon could belong to a collection category and a preparation category at the same time, while also carrying a Favorite marker.

Edit or delete a Tag

The Tags page provides controls to edit or delete Tags. Use editing when the category still makes sense but its name or color no longer communicates your system. Delete a Tag when the category has served its purpose and you no longer need to filter by it. Review your intended change before confirming, because deleting a category removes that organizational label even though it does not represent the same action as transferring a Pokémon.

Manage a Tag from a Pokémon

Niantic also describes a per-Pokémon route. Open the Tag menu from the Tag shown beneath the Pokémon’s HP bar or from the Pokémon’s action menu. From there you can add or remove Tags and view the group of Pokémon carrying a Tag. This route is useful when you are already inspecting one Pokémon and want to correct its categories without returning to the main Tags page.

How to find Favorites and Tags in your inventory

Search for Favorites

Open the Pokémon list and tap the magnifying-glass search control. Enter favorite. The results show Pokémon marked as favorites, giving you a direct way to audit the protection markers you have applied.

Search for a specific Tag

Enter # followed by the Tag name. Niantic’s example is #battle. The hash sign is part of the search syntax; use the name you assigned to the Tag. If the name contains spaces or unusual punctuation, use the exact label shown in your Tags interface and, if necessary, tap the Tag from the Tags header instead of relying on typed search.

Filter by tapping a Tag

From the Tags header in the Pokémon inventory, tap a Tag to filter the collection to Pokémon carrying it. This visual route is convenient when you do not want to remember the spelling of a category. It also lets you inspect the available Tag names before deciding which group to work on.

How to use Favorite and Tag together

Separate protection from purpose

Give each feature one job in your personal system. Use Favorite as the high-sensitivity warning for an individual Pokémon. Use Tags as descriptive labels for work you may repeat: preparing a group, tracking a project, or separating collections. This division keeps a category change from being mistaken for a transfer safeguard.

Example workflow for a new Pokémon

  1. Open the Pokémon’s profile after catching or receiving it.
  2. Decide whether losing this exact Pokémon would be a mistake. If yes, tap the star to Favorite it.
  3. Decide which of your existing categories describe it. Add the relevant Tags from the Tag menu or from the Tags page.
  4. Return to the inventory and test the appropriate retrieval method: favorite for the protection list or #tagname for a category.

This workflow does not require every Pokémon to receive both markers. Apply the marker that answers the actual question you expect to ask later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example cleanup workflow

  1. Search favorite and review the results first.
  2. Exit that result set and open the Tag you plan to process, either by tapping it in the Tags header or by searching #tagname.
  3. Check the Pokémon in that filtered group against your intended action.
  4. For a Pokémon that belongs in a different category, add or remove its Tag through the Tag menu.
  5. For a Pokémon that should receive individual protection, mark it as Favorite before continuing.

The order matters because it puts the broadest accidental-transfer check before category-based work. It does not make Favorite or Tag a substitute for reviewing the final selection yourself.

Choosing between them in common situations

“I only want to avoid an accidental transfer.”

Use Favorite. You are protecting particular Pokémon, not building a collection index. Search favorite whenever you need to verify which individuals carry the marker.

“I want a list I can reuse for a recurring task.”

Use Tag. A named category can be opened repeatedly, filtered from the Tags header, and searched with its hash-prefixed name. Add Favorite only to members whose individual loss would be especially problematic.

“I want to divide Pokémon into several overlapping groups.”

Use Tags. The Tag system is designed around player-selected groups, and the per-Pokémon menu lets you add or remove categories as your plans change. Favorite can still sit alongside those groups as a separate protection signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I am below Level 15 and cannot find Tags.”

Niantic’s Tag help page states that the feature is available to Trainers at Level 15 and above. Until the Tags interface is available to your account, Favorite remains the documented individual protection tool, and the inventory search can still find favorites with favorite.

“My collection is small.”

You do not need Tags simply because they exist. If a Favorite marker answers your only recurring question, adding categories may create maintenance work without solving a problem. Start with the smallest system that makes your decisions safer, then introduce Tags when you repeatedly need the same group.

Naming and maintenance practices that prevent confusion

Use names that describe an action or a stable characteristic

A Tag name should tell you why the group exists when you see it weeks later. Names such as trade, battle, or to-evolve are immediately interpretable examples. Avoid creating several near-duplicates whose differences you will not remember. The game does not prescribe a naming convention, so consistency is your responsibility.

Keep one meaning per Tag

Do not let a single label mean two unrelated things. If trade sometimes means “available for trade” and sometimes means “already discussed with a friend,” split those meanings into separate Tags. Clear definitions make the filtered result actionable.

Review categories after a project ends

When a temporary task is complete, remove Tags from Pokémon that no longer fit or delete the obsolete Tag from the Tags page. This keeps the header and search results readable. Deleting a Tag is an organizational decision; it is not the same as deleting or transferring the Pokémon itself.

Check the individual before changing the group

Before removing a Pokémon from a category, open its profile and decide whether it should remain a Favorite. A Tag change should not accidentally erase the separate protection choice you made for that Pokémon.

Troubleshooting Favorite and Tag searches

A Favorite does not appear in the results

  • Confirm that you entered favorite in the Pokémon inventory search field opened with the magnifying glass.
  • Open the Pokémon’s profile and check whether the star is selected.
  • Make sure you are searching the Pokémon inventory rather than another in-game list.

Niantic’s search instructions define the term and the star action; they do not publish a comparative speed or accuracy statistic for this filter.

A Tag search returns nothing

  • Include the hash sign before the name, for example #battle.
  • Check the spelling and spacing against the label displayed on the Tags page.
  • Use the Tags header and tap the category directly to determine whether the issue is typing or membership.
  • Confirm that the Pokémon was actually selected through Add Pokémon and that you tapped Select to apply the change.

The Tags page is missing

Check the documented eligibility condition first: Tags are available to Trainers at Level 15 and above. If your account meets that condition but the interface still does not appear, consult the current in-game help or Niantic support because the cited help page does not provide a device-specific troubleshooting sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Pokémon is in the wrong category

Open that Pokémon’s Tag menu from beneath the HP bar or from its action menu. Remove the incorrect Tag, add the intended one, and then view the tagged group to confirm the result. This edits category membership without requiring you to recreate the entire Tag.

What the official documentation does and does not claim

Niantic’s pages explain the controls, search terms, Tag creation flow, and the Level 15 access requirement. They do not publish Favorite-versus-Tag adoption rates, time-saved measurements, transfer-error studies, or a claim that one feature is faster or better for every player. Treat any recommendation about which system feels easier as a personal workflow choice, not as a measured advantage.

The documented distinction is enough to make a practical decision: Favorite is protection-oriented and individual; Tag is category-oriented and group-based. The complementary workflow follows from those separate functions, while the exact categories and naming scheme remain up to you.

Bottom line: choose by the question you need to answer

Ask whether you are trying to protect one Pokémon or retrieve a group. If the answer is protection, tap the star and use favorite when checking your inventory. If the answer is grouping, create a named Tag, assign the relevant Pokémon, and use the Tags header or #tagname to filter them. When both concerns apply, use both markers: Favorite protects the individual, while Tags explain how it fits into your collection.
