Favoriting a Pokémon in Pokémon GO marks it with a star and protects it from being transferred. Niantic’s documented rule is specific: a favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred until you remove it from your favorites. You can later find marked Pokémon by searching favorite in your Pokémon inventory.
The star is a safety feature, not a power-up. Official help does not describe any increase to CP, stats, battle performance, evolution results, or other gameplay benefits from favoriting.

What the Favorite star actually does
When you tap the star on a Pokémon’s summary page, the Pokémon is added to your favorites list. The practical effect is a transfer block that remains in place while the star is active. Niantic states that “Favorited Pokémon can’t be transferred until they’re removed from the list.” You can read the control description in the Pokémon GO Help Center’s Pokémon summary guide.
This matters because a transfer is permanent. Once you confirm a transfer, the Pokémon leaves your collection and cannot be recovered. A favorite therefore gives you a deliberate pause before an irreversible decision, especially when Pokémon have similar names, valuable appraisal results, event costumes, legacy moves, or personal significance.

What remains unchanged
Favoriting does not turn the Pokémon into a stronger version. The official feature description covers list membership and transfer prevention; it does not say that the star raises CP, changes individual values, improves move damage, increases catch quality, affects candy, or grants a battle advantage. Treat the star as collection protection rather than an upgrade.
How to favorite a Pokémon
You can mark an individual Pokémon from its details screen. The labels and layout can shift slightly between app versions or operating systems, but the action is the star control on the Pokémon’s summary.
- Open your Pokémon collection. From the map, open the Pokémon storage screen and choose the Pokémon you want to protect.
- View its summary. Tap the entry to open the page showing its species, CP, moves, appraisal access, and other details.
- Tap the star. Select the star icon on the summary. Its marked state indicates that the Pokémon is now a favorite.
- Leave the summary. The favorite status is saved to that Pokémon; there is no separate purchase, item, or confirmation code required.
Use the star after checking that you have selected the intended Pokémon. If you have several copies of the same species, compare the name, CP, appraisal, location, costume, or other identifying details before marking one. The safeguard helps with later transfers, but it cannot correct a mistake if you favorite the wrong copy or fail to favorite the one you meant to keep.

Favorites can be filtered from the Pokémon inventory with Niantic’s documented search term, favorite. Open the collection search field and enter that word; the results are limited to Pokémon carrying the favorite status. A simple review routine
- Open Pokémon storage and activate the search field.
- Type
favoriteexactly as the filter term. - Review the returned list before mass-cleaning your storage.
- Open an entry if you need to verify its details or remove its star.
- Clear the search when you want to see your full collection again.
This filter is useful for a quick inventory audit. It can show which Pokémon you intentionally protected without requiring you to remember every species or scroll through storage pages.
Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon?
Not while it is favorited. The transfer flow will require you to remove the Pokémon from favorites first. Niantic’s Transferring Pokémon support article explains both the restriction and the fact that transfers cannot be undone.
How to transfer one after changing your mind
- Open the Pokémon’s summary from your collection, or locate it through the
favoritesearch. - Tap the star to remove the favorite status.
- Start the normal transfer command from that Pokémon’s menu.
- Check the selected species and identifying details again.
- Confirm the transfer only when you are certain you no longer want the Pokémon.
Removing the star does not transfer anything by itself. It only removes the protection, leaving the Pokémon in your collection until you complete the separate transfer action. If you close the summary after un-favoriting, the Pokémon remains available for ordinary play and storage management.

Favorite and Tag are separate collection features. Favorite is represented by a star and has a documented transfer-protection effect. Tags are a categorization system for organizing groups of Pokémon. A tag can help you label a raid team, evolution project, trading group, or other collection category, while the favorite star answers a narrower question: “Should this Pokémon be protected from transfer?”

You can use both on the same Pokémon when both purposes apply. For example, a Pokémon can be tagged for a particular battle group and favorited because you do not want to transfer it accidentally. Neither status should be treated as a substitute for checking the Pokémon’s details before a permanent action.
When favoriting is most useful
Protecting rare or irreplaceable catches
Mark Pokémon that would be difficult or impossible to replace, such as a favorite from a limited event, a trade with sentimental value, or a specimen you selected for a long-term project. The star creates a barrier against routine transfer decisions when you are clearing storage.
Separating keepers from expendable duplicates
If your storage contains many copies of one species, favorite the specific ones you have evaluated and intend to retain. This is more reliable than remembering that one particular copy has the best appraisal or a preferred move set, especially after sorting or searching the collection.
Preparing for a storage clean-up
Before transferring large numbers of Pokémon, search favorite and inspect the results. The filter provides a focused checklist of protected Pokémon. You can then clean other entries while leaving the marked list untouched.

Maintaining a personal collection
Some Pokémon are worth keeping for reasons that do not affect their combat statistics: a first catch, a location memory, a costume, a lucky trade, or a name you assigned. Favoriting records that personal decision in the game’s collection interface and blocks accidental transfer.
What the star does not guarantee
The transfer safeguard is narrower than a universal lock. The official help pages establish prevention of transfer while favorited, but they do not state that the star prevents every other action. Do not assume, based on the icon alone, that it blocks evolution, powering up, changing moves, trading, or any other collection operation. Check the confirmation screen for the specific action you are taking.
Likewise, a favorite is not a backup. It does not create a second copy, restore a deleted Pokémon, preserve a snapshot outside your account, or protect against losing access to the account itself. Its documented role is to stop an in-game transfer until you deliberately remove the status.

Troubleshooting the favorite workflow
The Pokémon still appears in normal searches
Favorite is a filterable status, not a separate storage box. A favorited Pokémon remains part of your ordinary collection and can appear in broader searches. Enter favorite when you specifically want the marked subset.

The transfer option is unavailable
Check the summary for the active star. If the Pokémon is favorited, remove the star first, then reopen or retry the transfer flow. Confirm that you changed the status on the correct copy when several entries share the same species.
You cannot find a Pokémon with the filter
Clear other search terms and make sure you entered favorite in the Pokémon inventory search field. Search filters can hide results when multiple conditions are active. If the interface looks different after an update, consult Niantic’s current inventory-search instructions rather than assuming the Pokémon was transferred.
You transferred the wrong Pokémon
Transfers are irreversible according to Niantic’s transfer guidance. The favorite feature is designed to reduce this risk before confirmation; it cannot restore a Pokémon after the transfer has completed. Contacting support should not be treated as a guaranteed recovery method.
A safe collection-management checklist
- Inspect the Pokémon’s details before deciding whether it is a keeper.
- Tap the star on every individual you want protected from transfer.
- Use
favoriteto review protected Pokémon before a clean-up. - When transferring a favorite, remove the star intentionally and verify the selected Pokémon again.
- Read the final transfer confirmation carefully because the action cannot be undone.
- Use tags separately when your goal is categorization rather than transfer protection.
Bottom line for Pokémon GO players
Favoriting adds a star and prevents that Pokémon from being transferred until you remove the star. It does not provide a documented combat or collection-stat bonus. Use it as a deliberate safety check for Pokémon you want to keep, find those entries with the favorite search, and treat every un-favorited transfer as permanent.
