To earn and level up a Gym Badge in Pokémon GO, interact with that specific Gym by battling there, defending it, or feeding treats to the Pokémon defending it. Each Gym has its own badge, which progresses through Basic, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. You can check your current progress in the badge’s details in your Trainer Profile.
What Gym Badges track
A Gym Badge records your interaction with one particular Gym; it is not a global player level. The Pokémon GO Help Center describes badges as recognition of how much you have interacted with Gyms through battling, defending, or feeding Pokémon treats. More interaction raises the badge tier.

Gym Badges are separate from Trainer levels and achievement medals. Trainer XP advances your Trainer level, while achievement medals track milestones such as distance traveled, PokéStops visited, and Pokémon caught. Gym Badges are tied to individual locations.
How to earn Gym Badge progress
Battle at the Gym
Battle Pokémon at the Gym to interact with that location. This can contribute to its badge progress, whether you are challenging the Gym or fighting there as part of your play.

Defend the Gym
Place a Pokémon at a Gym your team controls and let it defend the location. Defending is one of the activities Niantic identifies as contributing to Gym Badge recognition.
Feed Pokémon defending the Gym
Give treats to Pokémon defending the Gym. Niantic also documents that Berries can be fed remotely: open the Pokémon menu and use the “Go to Gym” option. Remote feeding is less effective at long distances.

Niantic does not publish per-action badge point values or rank these activities by badge progress. Choose the interaction that fits your access to the Gym, then check the badge’s own progress meter rather than estimating progress from a number of battles, defense time, or treats.
Gym Badge tiers and rewards
The progression order is Basic → Bronze → Silver → Gold. Niantic’s Gym Badge guidance does not state exact thresholds for reaching each tier, nor does it quantify the bonus items by tier.

Higher Gym Badge tiers provide bonus items when you spin the Photo Disc at that Gym. The benefit is location-specific: spin the disc at the Gym whose badge you have advanced.
How to check a badge’s progress
- From Map View, tap your Trainer Profile picture.
- Scroll to Gym Badge and tap List.
- Choose the Gym Badge you want to inspect. Its details show your interaction history and progress toward the next tier.
Use Badge Map to see your badges displayed on the globe. The list and individual badge details are the useful places to check a specific Gym’s progression.

What feeding defenders earns besides badge progress
Niantic’s “Battling at Gyms” guidance says feeding Berries to defending Pokémon also earns Stardust and XP. Those are separate rewards; they are not badge points, and the cited guidance does not give a badge-point conversion for feeding.
