If a Pokémon GO friendship-level notification arrives after your Lucky Egg expires, the doubled XP may not be awarded. Niantic’s Help Center advises activating an Egg before a friendship increase, but the available evidence does not establish whether this notification-delay issue is currently acknowledged or fixed. To reduce timing uncertainty, wait for the milestone notification while the Egg is active before moving on to other XP activities.
How Lucky Eggs and friendship XP are supposed to work
A Lucky Egg doubles XP earned for a limited time, typically 30 minutes; special events may extend that duration. Niantic’s Lucky Egg help page recommends using an Egg before a friendship increase, particularly when reaching Ultra Friends or Best Friends.

According to the Pokémon GO team, sending a Gift, taking part in a raid or Gym battle, or trading can increase friendship. Friendship can increase once per day per friend. The guidance does not explain whether the XP bonus is determined by the action that triggers the milestone or by when its notification appears.
What is known about the notification-delay bug
A Reddit post from April 15, 2021 reproduced wording it attributed to Niantic’s known-issues page: “Trainers may see a delayed notification after the effects of the Lucky Egg have run out, causing them to not obtain doubled experience for their Friendship level increases.” This is a historical report of official wording, not a direct, current statement from Niantic. Players also described delayed or missing friendship notifications and XP in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Those accounts document what individual players experienced; they do not establish how common the problem is, prove that all reports share a cause, or show whether Niantic has fixed it. How to reduce the risk of missing doubled XP
- Plan around the Egg window. The usual duration is 30 minutes, though an event may extend it. Consider that window before coordinating several friendship milestones.
- Activate the Lucky Egg before the milestone. This follows Niantic’s recommendation to use an Egg before a friendship increase.
- After the triggering interaction, return to the main map and wait. Let the friendship-level notification appear while the Egg is active before starting evolutions or other XP activities. This is a cautious timing measure based on reported symptoms, not an official guarantee.
- Check friendship-level notifications. A 2022 community guide suggested toggling the setting to prompt delayed notifications. Treat that as player advice, not a verified support procedure or guaranteed fix.
Restarting the app, refreshing data, or triggering a wild encounter have also appeared as player suggestions, but the available sources do not confirm them as reliable solutions.

If the XP seems to be missing
Record the approximate time of the friendship interaction, which milestone completed, when the Egg was activated and expired, when the notification appeared, and the visible XP total. These details can help describe the sequence to support, but they do not prove a particular server-side cause.
For current game-support information, Pokémon Support directs players to the Pokémon GO Help Center, which it identifies as maintained by Niantic. The available sources do not confirm that support will restore missing XP or provide compensation.
