You need 50 Clamperl Candy, and there is no supported way to choose which Pokémon you receive. To get both, keep evolving Clamperl or trade for the missing evolution.
How to evolve Clamperl in Pokémon GO
- From the map, tap Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon.
- Select the Clamperl you want to evolve.
- On its summary page, tap Evolve.
- Confirm the evolution if prompted.
The Clamperl’s summary page must show at least 50 Clamperl Candy. Pokémon GO then randomly evolves it into Huntail or Gorebyss. See the official Pokémon GO evolution instructions and Clamperl’s current evolution data.

Can you choose Huntail or Gorebyss?
No. Pokémon GO does not show a choice screen or provide separate buttons for Huntail and Gorebyss. Each Clamperl evolution independently produces one of the two Pokémon at random.
Having 100 Candy gives you two evolution attempts, but it does not guarantee one Huntail and one Gorebyss. Exact odds are not publicly confirmed by Niantic, so treat the result as random rather than as a guaranteed 50/50 split.

If you need both species for your Pokédex, continue evolving additional Clamperl until both outcomes appear. You can also trade for the missing Pokémon.
What affects Clamperl’s evolution?
There is no documented selection method based on any of the following:
- IVs or appraisal rating
- CP or Pokémon level
- Gender
- Moves
- Nickname
- Time of day
- Weather
- Buddy status or walking distance
- Evolution items
- Trading Clamperl before evolving it
A high-IV or perfect Clamperl is not more reliably linked to either branch, and changing its nickname or other conditions does not give you control over the result. Current evolution references continue to describe the branch as random, including Bulbapedia’s Pokémon GO evolution-family reference.

Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale do not work
In the main-series Pokémon games, Clamperl’s evolutions are associated with the Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale. Those mechanics do not apply to Pokémon GO.
In Pokémon GO, Clamperl evolves using 50 Clamperl Candy. Neither evolution item is required, consumed, or usable for selecting Huntail or Gorebyss.
Why the Evolve button may be unavailable
You have fewer than 50 Clamperl Candy
This is the usual reason. Open Clamperl’s summary page and check the Candy requirement shown beneath the Evolve button.

The Pokémon is otherwise unavailable for the action
Check that you selected the intended Clamperl and that the game is displaying its normal summary page. Favoriting a Clamperl does not create a known evolution requirement; favorites mainly protect Pokémon from accidental transfer.
What if several Clamperl evolve into the same Pokémon?
That can happen under a random system. Getting Huntail repeatedly, or Gorebyss repeatedly, does not prove that IVs, gender, moves, or your account are controlling the result. It means the other outcome has not appeared in those attempts.

There is no reset, rename, or pre-evolution setup that is documented to change the result. Your practical options are to use more Clamperl or obtain the desired species through a trade.

Trading for Huntail or Gorebyss
Huntail and Gorebyss can be traded like other eligible Pokémon. For a standard local trade, both Trainers must be physically nearby. The in-game path is:
Map View → Trainer Profile → Friends → select the friend → Trade
Trading can change a Pokémon’s CP, HP, and other stats. A traded Pokémon cannot be returned to its original Trainer or traded again, so verify the Pokémon and trade details before tapping Confirm. Pokémon GO also supports remote trading between Forever Friends, subject to the game’s restrictions and limits. See the official trading guide and remote-trading support page.
