You can level up past 40 in Pokémon GO by earning the XP shown for your next level; from levels 71 through 80, you must also complete that level’s Level-Up Research tasks. The Trainer level cap is now 80. Niantic’s October 15, 2025 update removed the old research tasks for levels 41–50, so guides listing those tasks are out of date.
How leveling past level 40 works now
Levels 41–70 require the XP threshold for each level, with no Level-Up Research gate. At levels 71–80, you need both the required XP and the tasks for that level. XP beyond a threshold carries forward, including while you work on research tasks.
The change took effect October 15, 2025. Niantic raised the cap from 50 to 80, rebalanced the XP curve, and removed Level-Up Research from levels 41–50. It says accumulated XP was applied to the new curve, players did not lose levels, and players who were at level 23 or higher gained at least one level. Pokémon GO’s official leveling update explains the change.
Published cumulative XP milestones
These figures are total XP accumulated to reach each milestone, not the amount needed just for that level. Niantic’s 2025 update publishes these milestones but does not provide a complete official XP table for every level in between.

Where to check your next level’s requirement
- Open your Trainer Profile. Tap your Trainer avatar to view your profile and progress.
- Check your XP progress. Your profile shows your current progress toward the next level.
- Review Level-Up Research if you are at level 70 or above. Tasks appear automatically in your Trainer Profile once you reach level 70. Check the Level-Up Research display for the tasks and their progress. The Help Center’s Trainer Profile guide describes where progress is shown.
- Meet both requirements from level 71 onward. Earn the displayed XP and finish the listed tasks. Any surplus XP still counts toward future progress.
Ways to earn XP
Niantic identifies catching Pokémon, visiting PokéStops, battling, and other gameplay as XP sources. Its official leveling guidance does not rank these activities by current efficiency, so there is no universally verified fastest method here. Choose activities that fit your play and check your profile to see your progress. The Help Center’s leveling guide covers XP and leveling.

Daily Adventure Egg
The October 2025 update introduced the Daily Adventure Egg. Starting at level 15, a Trainer can receive one each day. It hatches after 1 km and awards 10,000 XP. It uses its own incubator; you can hold and incubate only one at a time, and it does not count toward current Egg storage. See Niantic’s update details for the feature’s terms.
What leveling rewards add
Leveling rewards include increases to Pokémon, Item, Gift, and Postcard storage, plus avatar items. Trainers at level 70 and above also have an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends with Best Friends. These are rewards or features associated with leveling, not extra requirements for reaching a level. Niantic describes them in its 2025 leveling update.

Why old level 41–50 guides are misleading
Guides written for the former 50-level cap may list tasks such as making excellent throws or winning battles to advance from levels 41–50. Those Level-Up Research requirements were removed in the October 2025 update. The research gate now applies to levels 71–80. For those levels, use the tasks displayed in your own Trainer Profile: Niantic’s public article does not enumerate every task for each level.
