Scopely completed its acquisition of Niantic’s games business on May 29, 2025, turning the February 2025 report that Pokémon GO’s maker was considering a sale into a finished transaction. Scopely announced the deal at a value of $3.5 billion; the business included Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire and Wayfarer.
How the reported sale became a completed deal
On February 18, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Niantic was exploring a sale of its games division to Scopely. That was a report about a possible transaction, not confirmation that a sale had happened. Scopely announced an agreement on March 12, then said the acquisition closed on May 29, 2025. The completed deal was valued at $3.5 billion in Scopely’s announcement.

The announcement also named Wayfarer, Niantic’s mapping and location-editing platform used in connection with its games. Scopely described the deal as an acquisition of Niantic’s games business, including its team and companion apps and services—not a transfer of every Niantic product or the entire original company. What Scopely said about Pokémon GO’s audience
In its March 2025 announcement, Scopely said Pokémon GO had more than 20 million weekly active players and characterized it as a top-10 mobile title in every year since 2016. Those are Scopely’s claims at the time of the announcement, not an independently verified current player count or ranking.

What happened to the Pokémon GO team?
A 2026 notice from the Pokémon GO team said the Niantic games team had officially updated its name to Scopely Explore and that the Pokémon GO team remained the same. That describes the games team’s identity and continuity; it does not mean that all Niantic businesses or products became part of Scopely Explore. Read the team’s notice.
