Successful raids can award regular Rare Candy, and limited-time research may offer it too—but neither is a guaranteed, fixed source. Rare Candy converts into the chosen Pokémon’s regular Candy; Rare Candy XL converts into that Pokémon’s Candy XL. Use the regular item where species-specific Candy is hard to obtain and where the evolution or power-up fits your plans.
What Rare Candy does
The Pokémon GO Help Center describes Rare Candy and Rare Candy XL as “Mysterious candy that will turn into a specific Pokémon’s Candy or Candy XL when you give it to that Pokémon.” In practice, you choose a Pokémon as the recipient, and the item becomes Candy for that species.
The two items serve different Candy pools: regular Rare Candy becomes regular Candy, while Rare Candy XL becomes Candy XL. They are not interchangeable. Before using either, make sure the selected Pokémon and the type of Candy match the progression you have in mind.
How to get more Rare Candy
Win Raid Battles
After a successful raid, special items may include Rare Candy, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center’s Raid Battles guide. “May include” means it is a possible reward, not a guaranteed drop; the guide does not state a fixed amount or drop rate.

You can collect one free Raid Pass per day by spinning a Gym Photo Disc, and you can hold only one free pass at a time. Premium Battle Passes also allow raid participation, while Remote Raid Passes allow you to join remotely. These passes provide access to raids; none guarantees Rare Candy.
Watch limited-time research and event rewards
Event Field Research can offer regular Rare Candy, but task rewards change. For example, the Pokémon 30th Anniversary event announcement listed Rare Candy among possible themed Field Research rewards for the event held March 3–9, 2026. That event has ended; it is an example of a temporary offer, not a standing task or currently available reward.
Check whether a bonus is for regular or XL Candy
Some event bonuses specifically award Rare Candy XL. The Forever Forward Daily Discoveries announcement listed one Rare Candy XL for completing in-person Max Battles on Max Monday and one Rare Candy XL for completing in-person Raid Battles during Wednesday Raid Hour. Those were XL rewards described in that season’s schedule, not regular Rare Candy. Check the live in-game schedule and each reward’s exact name before planning around a bonus.
The official pages cited here do not provide a complete current list of regular Rare Candy sources, quantities, or odds. Check current reward screens and official event announcements for offers that are live now; do not treat a possible reward as a promise.

What should you spend Rare Candy on?
Spend it where the Pokémon’s own Candy is difficult for you to get and the planned use matters to your goals. That might mean completing an evolution you want or powering up a Pokémon you intend to use. This is a practical way to allocate a flexible resource, not an official ranking of Pokémon.
- Choose a specific recipient: Decide which Pokémon will receive the Candy before converting a large stockpile.
- Name the goal: Know whether the Candy will finish an evolution or contribute to a power-up you actually want.
- Keep it flexible if you are unsure: If you do not have a meaningful use in mind, there is no need to convert the item yet.
There is no universally best recipient established by the item’s mechanics alone. The right choice depends on which Pokémon you want to progress and how difficult its Candy is for you to obtain.
