To beat Shadow Mewtwo in Pokémon GO, bring Pokémon with strong Dark-, Ghost-, or Bug-type attacks, coordinate Purified Gems when the boss becomes enraged, and plan to battle in person at a Gym. Shadow Mewtwo has appeared in Shadow Raids before, but those past events do not confirm that it is available now. Check the in-game News and nearby raid listings before assembling a group or spending resources.
Is Shadow Mewtwo in raids right now?
Shadow Mewtwo has returned in past Shadow Raid events, including 2023’s Rising Shadows and 2024’s World of Wonders: Taken Over. Those announcements are historical, not a schedule: they do not establish availability on October 8, 2026, or announce a future return. Check Pokémon GO’s current News and nearby raid listings for a live event before making plans.
Niantic’s Rising Shadows announcement documented Shadow Raids’ debut and Shadow Mewtwo’s return in them. The World of Wonders: Taken Over announcement documented another past return.
What counters work against Shadow Mewtwo?
Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type Pokémon, so Dark-, Ghost-, and Bug-type attacks are super effective. Choose the best-built Pokémon you already have that can use those attacks; there is no universal best six for every raid. The right lineup depends on your Pokémon’s levels and moves, Mewtwo’s actual moveset, weather, Mega bonuses, and how many Trainers are battling.

- Bug: Bug attacks also exploit Mewtwo’s weakness and can be a useful option if your available Bug attackers are better built.
Compare your options by attack type and move quality, survivability, prior investment, and whether a Mega Evolution can help the group. The counter reference identifies the three effective types, but does not establish a current simulation-based ranking of individual Pokémon.
How do Shadow Raids and Purified Gems work?
Shadow Raids take place at Gyms taken over by Team GO Rocket. Their eggs and bosses are marked with a purple flame; after the egg hatches, the Gym appears black on the map. During battle, a Shadow boss can become enraged and harder to defeat. Trainers can use Purified Gems during the fight to help subdue it and return it to its non-enraged state. A victory gives the group rewards and a chance to catch the boss with Premier Balls. See Niantic’s Shadow Raids guide.

Coordinate gem use with your group rather than treating each Gem as an individual fix. Keep an eye on the raid timer as you balance using Gems, dodging, and dealing damage.
Can you remote raid Shadow Mewtwo?
Niantic’s raid types guide describes Shadow Raids as in-person Gym battles and says Remote Raid Passes cannot be used to invite other Trainers to them. Because raid access rules can change, check the current in-game client and Help Center before organizing around this restriction.

How should you prepare your raid party?
- Build a six-Pokémon party. Niantic’s general Raid Battle guide says you choose six Pokémon. Fill the party with your strongest eligible Dark-, Ghost-, or Bug-type attackers rather than waiting to build a costly lineup from scratch.
- Coordinate with your group. Agree on who will use Purified Gems if Mewtwo becomes enraged, and consider a Mega-Evolved Pokémon for bonuses that can help the group.
- Dodge charged attacks when useful. Niantic recommends dodging charged attacks to reduce damage taken. Use dodges when they help your team stay in the fight, but keep the timer in view.
- Rejoin if the raid is still active. If your party faints and the group has not won yet, you can rejoin an unfinished raid without spending another Raid Pass. Choose a replacement party suited to the remaining battle.
There is no guaranteed minimum group size established here: results vary with Trainer levels, counters, moves, and raid conditions. If your group is small or struggling, improve attack quality, coordinate Gems, and avoid losing time to repeated knockouts.
After a win, the number of Premier Balls you receive is affected by damage dealt, Gym control, and how quickly the boss is defeated, according to Niantic’s Raid Battle guide. Use those balls to attempt the catch.

Should you keep Shadow Mewtwo Shadow or purify it?
Make this choice based on your goals for the Pokémon, not just the convenience of a cheaper upgrade. Niantic says Shadow Pokémon deal more damage with Fast and Charged Attacks, but also take more damage. They cost more Candy and Stardust to power up and unlock a second Charged Attack. Purifying reduces those resource costs and changes Frustration to Return; it also means giving up the Shadow form’s damage tradeoff. Read Niantic’s Shadow Pokémon guide before deciding.
Shadow Pokémon know Frustration when caught. A Charged TM normally cannot remove it, except during special events. If keeping Shadow Mewtwo, account for that move restriction; if considering purification, weigh the changed move and resource costs against your collection and battle preferences.
