The deal was announced on March 12, 2025, and closed on May 29, 2025. Scopely is owned by Savvy Games Group, the company behind the connection to MONOPOLY GO!—but Pokémon GO was not sold on its own.
Who bought Pokémon GO?
Scopely acquired Niantic’s games business. Savvy Games Group’s closing announcement describes Scopely as wholly owned by Savvy, which it identifies as a Public Investment Fund (PIF) company. MONOPOLY GO! is a Scopely franchise; it was not part of the Niantic transaction. Savvy Games Group’s announcement
The headline’s $3.5 billion figure is the announced value of the transaction for the games business and portfolio, not a separate valuation for Pokémon GO. The public announcements establish the stated deal value and scope, not the terms in private transaction documents.
What was included in the $3.5 billion deal?
The announced acquisition brought Niantic’s games business and team to Scopely. The included games and services named in the announcements were:

The sale did not cover every Niantic asset. Niantic’s March announcement said its technology platform would be spun off separately into Niantic Spatial, which would continue developing geospatial AI and augmented-reality software. Ingress Prime and Peridot were to operate within Niantic Spatial rather than Scopely’s acquired games business. Niantic’s agreement announcement
When was the sale announced and when did it close?
Niantic and Scopely announced the agreement on March 12, 2025. At that point, completion was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Savvy Games Group announced that the acquisition had closed on May 29, 2025. These are distinct milestones: March was the announcement; May was the confirmed completion. Closing announcement

In its 2025 closing announcement, Savvy reported that the acquired games and apps had more than 30 million monthly active players and generated more than $1 billion in revenue in 2024. The same announcement said Pokémon GO had more than 100 million unique players in 2024, was played across more than 190 countries and regions, and had average daily playtime above 40 minutes. These are figures reported by the acquiring company; the announcements do not establish them as independently audited measurements. Savvy Games Group’s 2025 figures

When the deal was announced, Ed Wu, identified as the Niantic leader of the Pokémon GO team, said the team would join Scopely and described it as staying together. He also said the partnership with The Pokémon Company would continue. Those were statements made at announcement time, not guarantees that the game’s future operations or features would remain unchanged. Wu put the point plainly: “I won’t say that Pokémon GO will remain the same, because it has always been a work in progress.” Pokémon GO team announcement
