Pokémon GO’s Weekly Challenges were not permanently removed. In October 2025, some players reportedly became unable to continue playing after completing a challenge because its completion popup would not close. The incident came just before Niantic’s scheduled October 15 Trainer-level update, but the available official announcements do not link the two issues. Niantic’s feature page later recorded Weekly Challenges as globally available from December 2, 2025, with opt-in matchmaking added January 19, 2026.
Why did Pokémon GO pull Weekly Challenges?
Niantic introduced Weekly Challenges as group tasks for up to four Trainers, accessed through the game’s Social tab. Players worked toward a shared goal, with rewards tied to whether the group completed it.

In October 2025, contemporaneous coverage reported that some players who finished a challenge encountered a completion popup they could not close, blocking them from continuing gameplay. Yahoo-hosted coverage carrying an IGN headline attributed an acknowledgement of the issue to Niantic Support. The original Support post was not independently verified, so this is best described as a reported problem affecting some users—not as a confirmed game-wide outage.
“Bricked” was headline shorthand for being stuck behind the popup. The report does not establish permanent device damage, irreversible account loss, or data loss. Nor does the available evidence identify the affected platforms, number of players, or exact duration of the incident. Yahoo-hosted report carrying the IGN headline

What were Weekly Challenges, and what changed later?
At launch, a successful challenge was described as granting extra Friendship progress, 20,000 XP, and 6,000 Stardust. Niantic said that groups that did not succeed would still receive Stardust. Those are the original announcement’s launch details; they should not be confused with the feature’s later availability information.
Niantic’s feature page records Weekly Challenges as globally available from December 2, 2025. It also says opt-in matchmaking was added on January 19, 2026, so Trainers could form groups with people who were not already friends. These later updates show that the feature returned and continued to evolve, but the page does not establish the exact date the October popup issue was resolved. Niantic’s Weekly Challenges page

Was the Level 80 update delayed by the incident?
Niantic announced that the Trainer level cap would increase from 50 to 80 on October 15, 2025. The announcement and detailed leveling page document the schedule and progression changes, but do not say the Weekly Challenges incident delayed or disrupted the update. The timing explains why players were concerned; it is not evidence of a causal connection.
The update changed Trainer levels, not Pokémon levels. Niantic said it would rebalance the overall leveling curve so players could earn levels more frequently, and that no one would lose levels. Its announcement put it this way: “No players will go down in level, but the amount of XP needed to reach the next level may change depending on your current level.” Niantic’s initial leveling announcement

What did reaching Level 80 require?
Niantic’s detailed page lists 203,353,000 total XP as the milestone for Level 80. For levels 71–80, it says Trainers need both XP and new Level-Up Research tasks at each level. The Level-Up Research tasks formerly required for levels 41–50 were removed. Niantic’s detailed leveling update
