Pokémon Heart & Soul vs. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver: What’s Different?

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pokémon Heart & Soul is not an alternate official edition of HeartGold or SoulSilver. It is an unofficial Game Boy Advance ROM hack that revisits the Johto adventure in a Gen 3-style game, adds its own progression and systems, and carries the journey into a Kanto postgame. HeartGold and SoulSilver are the official Nintendo DS remakes that inspired parts of its design. The choice is therefore between an officially released remake and a fan-built reinterpretation, not between two versions of the same game.

Heart & Soul and HeartGold/SoulSilver at a glance

Comparison Pokémon Heart & Soul Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Status Unofficial fan project and ROM hack Official Pokémon remakes for Nintendo DS
Technical foundation Game Boy Advance-style, Gen 3-based experience Nintendo DS remake experience
Relationship to Johto Rebuilds the Johto journey with project-specific progression, encounters and systems Official remake interpretation of the Johto games
Postgame Includes a Kanto postgame in its own structure The official remake structure is the reference point for the project
Customization and modern tools Customization, following Pokémon, day/night encounters, randomizer and challenge settings, quality-of-life options, and modern mechanics are listed by the project Use the official games as the baseline; do not assume every Heart & Soul system is present
Battle facilities No Pokéathlon Dome; the feature documentation points to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents instead The official games are the source experience Heart & Soul is changing
Kurt’s custom Poké Balls Berries replace Apricorns in the project’s implementation Heart & Soul identifies this as a difference from its source games
How you obtain it The project describes distributing a UPS patch rather than a complete Pokémon ROM Official DS game products

That table captures the central distinction: Heart & Soul uses familiar Johto material, but it is designed to make different decisions. A route, encounter, facility or quality-of-life feature should not be assumed to match the DS remakes simply because the location or story premise is recognizable.

What Pokémon Heart & Soul actually is

A fan-made GBA-style reinterpretation

Heart & Soul is built for a Game Boy Advance-style experience. Its project materials describe inspiration from Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, then layer on original choices about progression, encounters, customization and convenience. It is therefore best understood as a reimagining of Johto rather than a demake that attempts to reproduce every screen and rule from HeartGold or SoulSilver.

The project’s disclaimer states that it is a fan project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the relevant rights holders. That status matters when you set expectations: official support, official distribution and official compatibility guarantees do not apply to the hack.

Why the same setting does not mean the same game

The shared foundation is the Johto adventure and a Kanto postgame. Beyond that foundation, the project intentionally changes how the game is structured. Its own FAQ and feature documentation tell players to expect differences in progression and features. In practical terms, a player who knows the DS remakes may recognize the broad journey while still needing to learn Heart & Soul’s encounter availability, rewards, optional systems and route order as a separate game.

Platform, format and access

Patch rather than a distributed ROM

The official FAQ says the project site provides a UPS patch, not a complete Pokémon ROM. A patch is a set of changes applied to a compatible base game file; it is not the finished game by itself. Follow the project’s own preparation instructions and use only game files you are legally entitled to use. The available materials do not establish jurisdiction-specific rules about ROM ownership or use, so this article does not make a legal determination for your country.

This distribution model also explains why setup can differ from playing an official DS cartridge. You need a compatible base file, a patching tool that supports UPS files, and a way to run the resulting GBA-style game. The project’s current instructions should take precedence over generic emulator or patching advice if they specify a particular base version or utility.

What the format changes for players

  • Hardware and software: You are targeting a GBA-style environment rather than a Nintendo DS cartridge.
  • Installation: The patch must be applied correctly; an incorrectly matched base file can produce a failed patch or an unstable game.
  • Support expectations: Troubleshooting depends on the project version, patching method and runtime, not on Nintendo’s support channels.
  • Save handling: Version changes can affect save compatibility, so keep a backup before applying an update.

Story, regions and progression

Johto remains the organizing idea

Heart & Soul follows the recognizable Johto premise and carries the adventure into Kanto after the main journey. That gives returning players a familiar geographic and narrative framework. It does not make the project a one-to-one port of Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold or SoulSilver: the project explicitly presents its own progression and feature choices.

Why route knowledge from HeartGold may be insufficient

Knowing the official remakes can help you understand the setting, but it is not a reliable substitute for a Heart & Soul guide. The project may alter when an area becomes accessible, which Pokémon appear, how rewards are presented or which quality-of-life tools are available. Treat remembered walkthrough steps as clues rather than guarantees, especially when planning a team around a specific encounter or item.

Kanto as a postgame, not proof of identical content

Both the project description and the comparison materials identify a Kanto postgame as part of Heart & Soul’s structure. That establishes the region’s role, not a promise that every Kanto route, trainer, dungeon, event or reward matches the DS remakes. If a particular postgame objective matters to you, consult the current Heart & Soul documentation instead of assuming the official sequence carries over unchanged.

Mechanics and quality-of-life changes

Following Pokémon

Following Pokémon is listed among the project’s modern features. In a practical sense, this means the hack is not limiting itself to the presentation conventions of a standard Gen 3 release. The exact availability, menu controls and restrictions can depend on the project version, so use the in-game instructions and current documentation for operational details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Day/night encounters

Heart & Soul documents day/night encounters as part of its design. Time can therefore influence which Pokémon you find or how encounter tables behave. Players transferring expectations from a fixed, remembered route should check the project’s encounter information and the time settings of their chosen runtime before concluding that a species is missing.

Customization

Customization is another deliberate departure from a minimal Gen 3-style presentation. The project materials identify customization as a feature, but the supplied documentation does not define one universal list of clothing, appearance slots or unlock conditions. The safe conclusion is that the game offers player-facing customization; the exact catalog and progression are version-specific details to verify in the current project guide.

Modern mechanics and convenience options

The feature list also refers to modern mechanics and quality-of-life options. These are intended to reduce friction or bring later design conventions into the GBA-style framework. Because “modern mechanics” covers multiple systems rather than one named rule, do not infer a particular move, ability, battle, breeding or interface behavior unless the project explicitly documents it for your version.

Challenge settings and randomization

Optional challenge tools

Heart & Soul lists challenge settings among its options. That makes the project more suitable for players who want to tailor difficulty instead of accepting one fixed rule set. The exact effects of each setting, when they can be selected and whether a choice can be changed mid-save are not established in the supplied materials. Read the setting descriptions before beginning a long playthrough.

2 Box Protector Heartgold/Soulsilver case for Nintendo DS NTSC ONLY
  • Precise fit: Specially designed for Nintendo DS NTSC version consoles, it perfectly matches the cartridge cases of Heartgold and Soulsilver games, providing all-around fit protection against scratches and bumps during transportation or daily storage
  • Dual Protection: Each set contains two protective cases, which can store two game cartridges at the same time. Made of high-strength plastic material, the cases are rugged and have good impact resistance, which can effectively resist external pressure and impact to ensure the safety of the items inside the case
  • Simple design: The appearance design is simple and generous, with transparent as the main color, which is convenient for players to quickly identify the games inside the box. At the same time, the thin and lightweight design will not take up too much space, whether it is placed on the bookshelf, drawer or carry out, it is very convenient
  • Dust and Moisture Resistant: The tightly fitting lid design effectively blocks dust, water vapor and other contaminants from entering the case, preventing the quality of the game cartridge and the box from being affected by moisture or dust, and prolonging its service life
  • NTSC only: This case is only suitable for NTSC version of Nintendo DS, customized for the size and specifications of this version of the console to ensure the best fit and provide exclusive protection for users of specific versions of the console

Randomizer support

Randomizer options are also listed. Randomization can change the relationship between route, time of day and expected encounter, so a conventional team-planning guide may no longer apply. If you enable it, record your settings and keep the original save separate from any randomized run. That makes it easier to diagnose an unexpected encounter table or return to a standard playthrough without overwriting progress.

Choosing a stable starting configuration

  1. Decide whether you want the documented, predictable encounter structure or a randomized run.
  2. Choose challenge settings before starting if the project presents them as new-game options.
  3. Write down the selected options and project version.
  4. Keep a clean backup of the resulting save before experimenting with updates or alternate settings.

Facilities and item systems that are different

No Pokéathlon Dome

One of the clearest substitutions is the absence of the Pokéathlon Dome. Heart & Soul’s feature page instead points to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents. Players looking for the official remakes’ Pokéathlon activity should therefore not search every Johto city for a missing entrance; the feature is not part of Heart & Soul’s listed design.

Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents

The replacement is not merely a renamed Pokéathlon. The project identifies the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents as the relevant optional facilities. They represent a different kind of postgame or side-content focus, with their own rules and challenges. The supplied materials do not provide a complete list of every facility, format or reward, so consult the project documentation for the version you are playing rather than assuming Emerald’s implementation is reproduced without changes.

Berries replace Apricorns for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls

Heart & Soul replaces Apricorns with berries for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls. This is a functional substitution, not just a visual rename: the item you collect for that crafting process is different from the one remembered by HeartGold and SoulSilver players. When planning a custom-ball project, follow Heart & Soul’s berry requirements and do not discard berries because you expect Apricorn trees to fill that role.

What is shared, and what should not be assumed

Safe expectation Do not assume
The adventure is rooted in Johto. Every badge, route gate, trainer or event occurs in the same order as the DS remakes.
A Kanto postgame is part of the project’s stated structure. Every Kanto location, battle or reward is identical to the official games.
The project adds customization and modern quality-of-life ideas. Every later-generation mechanic is present or behaves exactly as in a newer official title.
Following Pokémon and day/night encounters are listed features. Every Pokémon is available at the same time, place or rate as in HeartGold or SoulSilver.
There are challenge and randomizer tools. A save created with one ruleset will behave like a standard, non-randomized save.
Kurt’s custom-ball system uses berries in this project. Apricorn collection routes and recipes from the DS games carry over unchanged.
Battle Frontier and Battle Tent content replaces the Pokéathlon Dome in the feature description. The substitute facilities offer the same activities, scoring or rewards as the Pokéathlon.

Current release and save compatibility

Version 2.0.4

The project homepage lists Pokémon Heart & Soul v2.0.4 as released on August 28, 2026. That is the version identified by the project materials for this comparison. Because fan projects can change their files and instructions, check the project’s release notes and download page immediately before patching.

Pre-v2.0 saves are not compatible

The FAQ states that saves made before version 2.0 are not compatible with v2.0.4. Moving from a pre-v2.0 build to v2.0.4 therefore requires starting a new save. This is a compatibility rule, not a recommendation: keeping the old file as a backup will not make it load on the newer build.

Version 2.0.0 saves remain compatible

The same FAQ says saves created with v2.0.0 are compatible with v2.0.4. Preserve the save in its original format, make a backup before changing files, and confirm the project’s current notes if a later patch supersedes v2.0.4. Never overwrite your only save while testing an update.

A safe update checklist

  1. Identify the exact version that created your save.
  2. Copy the save to a separate backup location.
  3. Read the release notes for the target build.
  4. Apply the new patch using the project’s stated base-file requirements.
  5. Load the backup copy first and verify that the game recognizes it.
  6. If the save is from before v2.0, plan a new game rather than trying repeated conversions.

Which game should you play?

Choose Heart & Soul if you want

  • A Johto-based adventure built for a GBA-style environment.
  • A fan project that deliberately changes progression and encounters.
  • Following Pokémon, day/night encounters, customization and listed quality-of-life additions.
  • Optional randomizer and challenge settings.
  • Battle Frontier and Battle Tent content instead of a Pokéathlon Dome.
  • A berry-based implementation of Kurt’s custom Poké Balls.

Choose HeartGold or SoulSilver if you want

  • The official Nintendo DS remake experience rather than an unofficial reinterpretation.
  • The source games that Heart & Soul names among its inspirations.
  • A conventional official release with no patching step or fan-project version dependency.
  • The original remake feature set, including the facilities and item assumptions that Heart & Soul changes.

Use both for different reasons

Playing both makes sense when you want to compare design approaches. Start with the official remake if you need a stable reference for the Johto story and then use Heart & Soul to see how a fan developer changes pacing, encounters, convenience and optional content. Reverse the order if you prefer discovering the reinterpretation first, but keep separate notes: a remembered solution from one game can be wrong in the other.

Common points of confusion

“Is Heart & Soul an official remake?”

No. It is an unofficial fan-made ROM hack. The project’s disclaimer says it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the relevant rights holders.

“Is it a direct port of HeartGold and SoulSilver?”

No. It draws from the Johto games and the official remakes, but its own materials emphasize intentional differences in progression, encounters, customization and features.

“Can I use a HeartGold walkthrough without changes?”

Not reliably. The shared Johto foundation can make a walkthrough useful for broad orientation, but encounter tables, progression gates, optional facilities and item systems may differ.

“Where is the Pokéathlon Dome?”

It is not part of Heart & Soul’s listed feature set. The project documentation points instead to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents.

“Should I look for Apricorns for Kurt?”

No. Heart & Soul replaces Apricorns with berries for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls.

“Can I carry my old save into v2.0.4?”

Only if it was created with v2.0.0, according to the FAQ. Saves from before v2.0 are stated to be incompatible and require a new game.

Bottom line

Heart & Soul is best viewed as a Johto-inspired fan game with a GBA-style foundation, modern conveniences and deliberate substitutions—not as another official HeartGold or SoulSilver version. HeartGold and SoulSilver remain the reference choice for the official DS remake experience. Pick Heart & Soul when its customization, challenge tools, randomizer options and altered facilities appeal to you, and treat its maps, encounters, items and save rules as those of a separate game.
