If Pokémon Hyper Emerald starts a new game, first confirm that you are using the intended ROM build, then make the ROM and .sav filenames match exactly and place both files where the emulator looks for saves. Use an in-game battery save—not a save state—when moving between builds. For the documented save loss after the Pokémon League, configure the emulator for Flash 128K. These fixes apply most directly to Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 and the Nn-Exe English + QoL patch; other Hyper Emerald releases may behave differently.
Identify the exact Hyper Emerald build before changing anything
“Pokémon Hyper Emerald” is used for several community releases. The troubleshooting instructions documented for this problem target Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7, plus the Nn-Exe English + QoL patch where noted. A save that works with one build is not automatically compatible with another.

The Nn-Exe patch is intended for the Chinese Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” ROM. Its instructions do not describe vanilla Pokémon Emerald as a valid input, and they exclude other Hyper Emerald releases listed by the project. If you patched a different ROM, changing the emulator’s save setting may not help because the file and game code may not belong to the same release.

What to record
- The full ROM filename, including its extension.
- The release name and version shown by the download or patch instructions.
- Whether the ROM is the Chinese v5.7 “bugfix 2” base, the Nn-Exe English + QoL result, or another build.
- The emulator and device you are using.
- Whether the missing data is a battery save (
.sav) or a save state such as.ss0or.state.
Keep those details together before attempting a conversion, a new patch, or save editing. The project documentation cannot identify a universal recovery method without them.

Check the base ROM when patching
The repository gives the original base ROM SHA-1 as f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9. Use that value only to verify the specified original base. Output checksums can differ between release pages and revisions, so use the checksum published for the exact release you are applying rather than treating one result hash as valid for every build.
Make the ROM and battery-save names match
Emulators normally associate a battery save with the ROM’s filename. The Hyper Emerald FAQ states that “Emulators match the .sav by file name.” In practice, the part before the extension must be the same.
Example of a matching pair
HyperEmerald_LostArtifacts_v5.7_bugfix2.gba
HyperEmerald_LostArtifacts_v5.7_bugfix2.sav
The extensions differ, but the base name is identical. A pair such as HyperEmerald.gba and LostArtifacts.sav will usually be treated as unrelated files even when they are in the same directory.
Safe rename procedure
- Close the game and the emulator completely so no save is still being written.
- Make a copy of the original
.savin a separate backup folder. Do not overwrite that copy while testing. - Choose the ROM filename you intend to keep. Avoid changing it repeatedly during troubleshooting.
- Rename the copied save so its base name exactly matches the ROM, preserving the
.savextension. - Put the ROM and renamed save in the folder the emulator scans for battery saves. Some emulators use the ROM directory; others have a separately configured save directory.
- Launch that ROM and use the game’s normal Continue or Load option. Do not load an old state file during this test.
On systems that hide extensions, verify that the file did not become name.sav.sav. Also check capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and accidental additions such as “(1)” in a copied ROM name. A filename that looks right in a file manager can still differ at the extension level.

When the emulator still starts a new game
- Confirm that the emulator is opening the ROM you just matched, not a duplicate copy in another folder.
- Open the emulator’s save-directory setting and compare it with the folder containing the
.sav. - Check that the save file is writable and is not zero bytes. Do not delete it simply because the game does not list it.
- Close the emulator after making a test in-game save, then confirm the timestamp and size of the intended
.savchanged.
If the file is present, correctly named, and in the configured location but the game still starts a new save, stop before experimenting with editors. The unresolved variables are then the exact ROM build, patch result, emulator, and save format.
Use a battery save when moving between ROM builds
A battery save is the game’s normal in-game save stored in a .sav file. A save state is an emulator snapshot, commonly stored as .ss0, .state, or a similarly named file. They are not interchangeable.
The Hyper Emerald Guide states: “Save states (.ss0, .state) do not transfer between ROM builds.” A state contains an emulator snapshot of memory, timing, and the exact game image that created it. Loading that snapshot into a changed ROM can fail outright or restore stale memory even when the battery save is sound.
Migration procedure for a compatible build
- Open the old ROM build that currently contains your progress.
- Load the game normally, not from a state slot.
- Use the game’s in-game save command and wait for the save operation to finish.
- Exit the old build cleanly and make a backup copy of the resulting
.sav. - Install or select the intended compatible build, keeping the backup separate.
- Give the new ROM and the copied
.savmatching base filenames and place the save in the new build’s configured save directory. - Start the new ROM and load the battery save through the game menu. Leave every old
.ss0or.statefile out of this first test.
If the new build does not recognize the battery save, that is evidence of a build, patch, filename, location, or save-type mismatch—not proof that the state file should be loaded instead. Return to the original backup and verify the build pair before trying another change.

Why changing only the extension does not work
Renaming progress.state to progress.sav does not convert the contents. The two files represent different kinds of data. Use an in-game battery save for the documented cross-build workflow; the project material does not provide a universal state-conversion tool.
Fix the documented save loss after the Pokémon League
The Hyper Emerald Guide calls out a specific symptom: the save appears to disappear after the League. For that case, it recommends setting the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K, stating that the hack needs the full 128 KB save.
Apply the setting without risking the original
- Close the game and copy the current
.savbefore changing emulator settings. - Open the emulator’s per-game or cartridge settings. The label may be “Save type,” “Backup memory,” or “Flash memory.”
- Select Flash 128K, not a smaller Flash capacity or an automatic option that chooses a different size.
- Save the configuration and launch the same ROM build.
- Test the battery save through the game’s own menu. Do not use a pre-League state file for this check.
- If the emulator creates a new save, keep that file separate from your backup and restore the backup before testing another configuration.
This is a symptom-specific recommendation. The available project documentation does not establish Flash 128K as a universal fix for every missing save, every emulator, or every Hyper Emerald version. If your problem occurs immediately after renaming a ROM, after applying a different patch, or on a release other than Lost Artifacts v5.7, resolve the build and filename questions first.
Handle an empty Items pocket after loading an old state
An apparently empty Items pocket can be a different problem from a missing .sav. The Hyper Emerald FAQ warns that an older emulator state can restore old in-memory data. Its technical notes describe a v1.6 migration scenario in which loading a stale state skipped the battery-save load; after a later map or battle transition, the Items pocket appeared empty.

Project-documented remedy
- Exit the state-loaded session.
- Restart the game rather than loading that older state again.
- Allow the game to load the battery save normally.
- Check the Items pocket after the restart and a normal transition.
In the documented v1.6 case, restarting loaded and migrated the save. Treat this as a version-specific state-memory issue. Resetting the game is not evidence that an unrelated missing .sav can always be recovered, and it should not replace the filename, build, and backup checks.
Choose the fix from the symptom
| What you observe | First check | Documented action | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| The game starts a new save after renaming or moving a ROM | ROM and .sav base names, plus the emulator’s save folder |
Match names, place the file in the configured folder, and launch without a state | Does not prove compatibility between different releases |
| The game starts a new save after changing builds | Exact Hyper Emerald release and patch input | Create an in-game battery save in the old build and load that .sav in the compatible build |
.ss0 and .state files do not transfer between ROM builds |
| The save disappears after the League | Whether this is the documented Lost Artifacts symptom | Set the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K, after backing up the file | Not established as a universal fix for other failures |
| Items appear empty after loading an older state | Whether a stale state was loaded and whether the issue matches the v1.6 notes | Restart and load the battery save normally | Version-specific; not a general save-repair method |
| A patch will not recognize the ROM | Base ROM identity and release instructions | Verify the specified Chinese v5.7 “bugfix 2” input and its published checksum | Result checksums vary by release and revision |
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
Replacing the only copy of the save
Renaming, importing, or changing save-type settings can cause an emulator to create a new file. If that new file replaces the original, you may lose the best recovery point. Keep the untouched .sav elsewhere before every experiment.
Testing with the wrong duplicate ROM
Download folders often contain several similarly named files: an unpatched base, a patched output, and a later revision. Open the exact file whose name you matched and check the emulator’s recent-file list or game information before judging the save.

Some emulator setups resume the last state when a game launches. Disable automatic state loading for the test, or use the game menu’s normal load path. Otherwise, an old snapshot can make a valid battery save appear absent or revert data.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Assuming every Hyper Emerald build uses the same save behavior
The project material covers named releases and symptoms, not every community fork. Do not apply the Nn-Exe patch to vanilla Emerald or an unrelated Hyper Emerald version based only on a similar filename. Confirm the release’s own instructions first.
Deleting files before identifying the format
A file ending in .sav is different from a state file, and both differ from emulator-specific backup formats. Record the filename and extension, preserve the original, and ask for version-specific guidance before deleting or converting anything.
A complete, low-risk troubleshooting order
Use this sequence when the symptom is unclear. It prioritizes checks that do not alter the original save.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop writing to the affected files. Close the emulator and copy the original battery save and any state files to a safe location.
- Identify the build. Write down whether the ROM is Lost Artifacts v5.7, the Nn-Exe English + QoL result, or another release.
- Separate file types. Work with the
.savfirst; set aside.ss0and.statefiles. - Match names. Give the ROM and battery save identical base names and verify the real extensions.
- Verify the folder. Use the emulator’s configured save directory, not merely the folder that is convenient in your file manager.
- Test a normal launch. Do not resume a state. Check whether the game offers the expected save.
- For a post-League failure only, test Flash 128K. Preserve the pre-change file and keep any newly generated save separate.
- For an empty Items pocket after a stale state, restart. Load the battery save normally and compare the result with the v1.6 scenario.
- Stop if the evidence does not fit. Gather the exact build, emulator, device, filename, location, extension, and observed error before attempting a repair tool or editor.
What information to provide when the basic checks fail
Support requests that include only “my save is gone” cannot distinguish a filename mismatch from an incompatible ROM or a state-memory problem. Include:
- The complete ROM filename and save filename, with extensions visible.
- The folder path or emulator save-directory setting, without posting private account information.
- The exact Hyper Emerald release, patch name, and whether the base was Chinese Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2.”
- The emulator name and version, operating system or device, and whether automatic state loading is enabled.
- Whether the file is a battery save, a state, or both; include the file sizes if available.
- The moment the failure began: after renaming, after patching, after changing builds, after the League, or after loading an old state.
- The exact on-screen behavior, such as a new-game screen, a missing Continue option, an Items pocket that is empty, or an emulator error.
These details allow the problem to be classified without guessing or recommending destructive changes. The documented project pages do not identify a universal save-repair utility for unspecified failures.
Understanding what each file can and cannot do
| File or setting | Purpose | Use during migration? |
|---|---|---|
.sav battery save |
Stores the game’s normal saved progress and is matched to the ROM filename | Yes. This is the documented method for moving between compatible builds |
.ss0 or .state |
Emulator snapshot of a particular ROM session | No. The guide says states do not transfer between ROM builds |
| Flash 128K setting | Configures the emulator’s save-memory type and capacity | Only for the documented post-League symptom in the relevant hack |
| ROM checksum | Identifies a particular base or release when compared with the project’s published value | Useful for verifying the specified patch input; output values depend on release |
When not to keep experimenting
Stop and preserve the backup when a proposed fix would delete, overwrite, truncate, or convert the only copy of the save. The available documentation supports filename matching, correct build selection, battery-save migration, the Flash 128K setting for the named post-League symptom, and a restart for the documented stale-state Items issue. It does not establish a safe universal procedure for damaged files, unsupported forks, or unknown emulator formats.
If your case falls outside those documented patterns, the most useful next step is identification rather than another setting change. A precise build name, patch input, emulator, file type, location, and symptom can show whether the problem is an association error, an incompatible build, a save-memory configuration issue, or stale state data.
