How to Transfer a Pokémon Save Between Emulator Apps Without Losing Progress

Move Pokémon progress between emulator apps safely by backing up the ordinary game save, matching the destination core’s format and folder, converting only when necessary, and verifying the trainer and a new save before deleting anything.

Use the Pokémon game’s ordinary in-game save—the battery save—not an emulator savestate. Make a separate backup, export or locate that save, match the destination emulator core’s required filename, extension and folder, then launch the game and verify the trainer and progress before touching the backup. A savestate can depend on the original emulator or core, and changing a file extension by itself does not convert its format.

What you should transfer: the game save, not the snapshot

Emulators usually create two different kinds of progress files. The first is the save written by the Pokémon game itself when you choose its Save command. It is often called a battery save, cartridge save, or ordinary game save. The second is a savestate: a snapshot of the emulator’s memory, CPU state, video state and sometimes other runtime details at a particular instant.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For a cross-app move, the ordinary game save is the dependable starting point. It represents the data the cartridge would have stored and is intended to be read when the game starts. A savestate is tied much more closely to the emulator and core that created it. Even two apps running the same game may use different memory layouts, versions or state-file formats.

mGBA’s API makes the distinction explicit: loadSaveFile handles save data, while loadStateFile and loadStateSlot handle savestates. Libretro’s mGBA documentation likewise lists *.srm as a cartridge battery save and *.state# as a state file. Those extensions describe that particular core/frontend context; they are not a universal rule for every emulator.

Before you move anything

Identify the exact source and destination

Write down the source app, destination app, platform, emulator core and approximate version. “Game Boy Advance save” or “Nintendo DS save” is not enough information. A file made by one core may use a different container or naming convention from a file made by another. The same app can also use different rules on iOS, Android, Windows, Linux or a handheld distribution.

  • Record the Pokémon game and regional variant, such as a specific language or revision.
  • Record the source emulator and core, not just the front end.
  • Find the destination core’s documented save directory and expected extension.
  • Check whether the destination has an Import, Load Save, or Save Management command.
  • Keep the same game/ROM revision where possible. A save can fail to load or behave incorrectly when paired with a different revision.

Close the game cleanly

Use the game’s own Save command, wait for the save to finish, and exit or close the game normally. Do not copy a file while the emulator is still writing it. If the app has an explicit “Flush save,” “Close content,” or “Eject” command, use it before looking for the file.

Make two backups

Copy the source save to a safe location before exporting, renaming, converting or importing. Keep one untouched copy and work from a second copy. Give the copies descriptive names that include the game and date, for example Pokemon-Emerald-before-transfer.sav. Do not overwrite the only known-good file with a destination-generated file.

A generic file-transfer method—local storage, a computer connection, a memory card or cloud storage—can carry the file. No particular accessory is required by the save-transfer process; the important requirement is preserving the file unchanged until you have verified the destination copy.

Step-by-step transfer procedure

1. Create the latest in-game save

  1. Start the Pokémon game in the source emulator.
  2. Use the game’s Save option rather than making only a savestate.
  3. Wait until the game confirms the save, then close the content cleanly.
  4. Locate the ordinary save file. If the app offers Export Save or Save Management, use that function. Otherwise, use the app’s documented save directory.

2. Confirm that you found the right file

Look for the file associated with the game’s exact ROM name. Do not assume the newest file in a folder is the Pokémon save; emulators may keep multiple games, automatic backups and state files together. A file ending in .state, .state1 or another numbered state suffix is a savestate, not the ordinary save you normally want.

File size can help distinguish files within one app, but it does not prove compatibility. A small or unfamiliar-looking file can still be valid, while a familiar extension can contain a format the destination cannot read.

3. Copy the save without changing the original

  1. Copy the source save to your transfer location.
  2. Copy it again as an untouched backup.
  3. Work only with the transfer copy when renaming or converting.

4. Use the destination’s import function when available

If the destination emulator provides an Import Save, Load Save, or equivalent command, select the copied ordinary save. An explicit import function is preferable because the app can place the file in the correct directory and, in some cases, convert it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select a savestate merely because its timestamp is newer. A savestate can return you to an old moment, fail to load, or appear to work while depending on the source core’s internal state.

5. If there is no import command, use the documented save folder

  1. Close the destination game and, if necessary, the emulator.
  2. Find the destination core’s save directory using that app’s documentation or in-app settings.
  3. Check the filename the destination expects. Some systems use the ROM’s base name; others use a title ID, game code or a core-specific name.
  4. Check the required extension and place the transfer copy in that folder.
  5. Start the destination emulator and open the matching game.

Changing the extension is only a naming operation. It is safe to do only when the destination documentation specifically says that the underlying format is already compatible. Renaming a file from .dsv to .sav, or from .sav to .srm, does not by itself rewrite the data.

6. Verify the loaded trainer and progress

Load the game normally, not just through a state slot. Check the trainer name, play time, location, party, badges, boxes and another detail that uniquely identifies your latest save. If the game starts at a new-game screen or shows an old checkpoint, close it without saving over the imported file and return to your backup.

7. Keep the backup until the transfer is proven

Play briefly, save again in the destination app, close and reopen the game, and confirm that the new save persists. Only then should you consider removing temporary files. Retain the original backup until you are satisfied that the destination can save and reload normally.

Why extensions and folders differ

Emulator front ends and cores choose their own conventions. One core may store a battery save beside the ROM with a matching base name; another may use a central save directory. The extension can identify a container used by a particular core, but it is not a universal definition of a Pokémon save.

mGBA and Libretro

In the Libretro mGBA context, .srm denotes a cartridge battery save and .state# denotes a numbered state file. mGBA’s save-loading and state-loading APIs are separate as well. If you are moving between mGBA-based setups, use the battery save and follow the destination frontend’s naming rule rather than copying a numbered state.

melonDS DS migration

melonDS DS migration notes state that the save-data format is unchanged from the legacy core, but instruct users to rename the save directory and .sav files to .srm. The same guidance says legacy-core savestates cannot be migrated to melonDS DS. This is a concrete example of a move where the data can remain usable while the directory and filename convention changes.

Follow the exact core instructions for your version. Do not generalize the melonDS rule to another DS emulator, another platform or another game.

Delta and RetroArch DS examples

Community Pokémon-save instructions describe a Delta-to-RetroArch DS workflow involving .dsv and .sav files. They also caution that a conversion may be needed and prefer the ordinary .sav game save over a .state file. Treat those instructions as an example rather than official, current Delta documentation: some steps are explicitly untested, and menu labels can change.

For this pairing, first export or locate Delta’s ordinary game save, then check the exact RetroArch DS core’s expected name, folder and format. Do not blindly rename a .dsv file and assume conversion has happened. If the core rejects it, use a converter that supports the source format or export a compatible .sav from the source app.

When a converter is needed

A converter is appropriate when the source and destination use genuinely different save containers, not merely different extensions. The converter must support the game system and the specific source format. Work on a copy and preserve the original before conversion.

mGBA’s 0.9.0 release announcement described a save converter that could convert between incompatible formats and extract a battery save from an mGBA savestate. That announcement is historical; it does not establish the current packaging, command name or interface in every present release. Consult the converter’s documentation for the version you actually install.

Safe conversion sequence

  1. Keep the untouched source save in a separate folder.
  2. Make a working copy and identify its actual format.
  3. Choose a converter that explicitly lists both the source and destination formats.
  4. Convert to a new output filename; never overwrite the source automatically.
  5. Place the converted output in the destination’s documented save directory.
  6. Launch the game and verify the trainer and progress.

If the only file you have is a savestate, first determine whether the source emulator or a compatible utility can extract its battery save. A state-to-save extraction is not guaranteed for every emulator, game or state version. If extraction fails, the state may remain usable only in its original app/core.

Moving saves between devices with RetroArch cloud sync

RetroArch’s cloud-sync guide includes save files and states among the data that can be synchronized when the feature is enabled. That can move RetroArch data between devices, but it does not guarantee that another emulator app will read the synchronized file unchanged.

Cloud sync is therefore a transport mechanism, not proof of cross-app compatibility. After synchronization, still check the destination core’s filename, folder and format, and keep a local backup before importing. A state synchronized from one RetroArch core can have the same compatibility limits as a state copied by cable.

Troubleshooting a missing or rejected save

The game starts a new game

  • Confirm that you copied the ordinary battery save rather than a state file.
  • Check that the file is in the destination core’s actual save directory.
  • Match the save filename to the ROM’s expected base name or title identifier.
  • Check capitalization and the extension exactly.
  • Make sure the destination is opening the same Pokémon game and regional revision.

The destination sees the file but says it is invalid

  • Restore the untouched backup and inspect the documented source format.
  • Do not keep changing extensions at random.
  • Use a converter that names the source and destination formats explicitly.
  • Check whether the source file is actually a savestate or a front-end database export.

The save loads, but progress is old

The copied file may have been made before your most recent in-game save, or the emulator may have been using a different save location. Reopen the source app, save from inside the game again, close it cleanly, and repeat the copy from the newly written file. Compare timestamps only as a clue; they do not prove which file contains the latest valid data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game loads once but the new destination save disappears

  • Check that the destination folder is writable.
  • Close the game normally so the emulator flushes its save.
  • Look for a second save directory selected by the core or frontend.
  • Ensure that a cloud-sync service or file manager is not restoring an older copy.
  • Keep the working backup and test a fresh in-game save before deleting anything.

A savestate will not load

This is expected when the destination uses a different emulator, core or version. Try the ordinary game save instead. Legacy-core savestates, for example, are not migratable to melonDS DS according to its migration guidance. A compatible converter may extract a battery save in some mGBA scenarios, but no converter can promise success for every state format.

A practical decision guide

Your situation Recommended action Do not do this
You have an ordinary .sav or equivalent game save and the destination documents the same format Back it up, match the destination name/folder, import it and verify the game Replace the only source copy
The destination expects a different extension but documents an unchanged format Follow the documented rename and directory change on a copy Assume every extension change is a conversion
You have a .dsv file for a DS game Check whether the destination accepts it or requires conversion to .sav Blindly rename it and delete the original
You have only a savestate Try the original core first; investigate a supported save-extraction utility Expect another app to read the state automatically
You are using cloud sync Use sync to transport the file, then perform the same format and verification checks Treat synchronization as a compatibility guarantee

Questions to answer before deleting the backup

  • Did the destination load the intended trainer name and latest location?
  • Are the party, badges, items and play time correct?
  • Did a new in-game save survive closing and reopening the destination app?
  • Are you certain the file you tested was the copied working file, not an older automatic backup?
  • Can you restore the original source save if the destination later fails?

If any answer is no, keep the backup and troubleshoot the filename, folder, format, ROM revision and core before trying another overwrite.

The short answer for Delta-to-RetroArch moves

Export or locate Delta’s ordinary Pokémon game save, preserve a backup, and identify the RetroArch DS core you intend to use. Put the save in that core’s documented directory with the exact expected filename and format. Because community instructions mention .dsv-to-.sav conversion but are not official current Delta documentation, verify the procedure for your versions instead of relying on a blind rename. Launch the game normally, confirm the trainer and progress, save again, reopen it, and only then retire the backup.

Bottom line

Cross-emulator Pokémon transfers work most reliably when you move the game’s battery save, not an emulator snapshot. Back up first, follow the destination core’s real naming and folder rules, convert only when the formats require it, and verify a complete save/reload cycle before deleting the original.
