The Pokémon Company was reported to have asked X to remove posts sharing alleged unannounced game material in October 2025. The reported request does not establish that the images, logos or project details in those posts were genuine: the European Commission’s IP Helpdesk said the company had not confirmed the material’s authenticity.
What was reported about the removal requests?
On 17 October 2025, Kotaku reported that Centro Leaks said The Pokémon Company (TPC) COO Takato Utsunomiya had contacted X about multiple alleged copyright infringements. According to Kotaku’s account of a screenshot, the claimed notice described posts containing images and videos “reproduced and distributed to the public without [the company’s] permission.” The posts reportedly included Wind and Wave logos and Pokémon said to be returning in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Kotaku said it had requested comment from the company. Kotaku’s report
The European Commission’s IP Helpdesk reported on 28 October 2025 that TPC had requested removal from social networks of posts disseminating alleged unannounced material from future games. It said Centro Leaks claimed to have received a notice from Utsunomiya asking for images and data to be deleted. The Helpdesk also explicitly said TPC had not confirmed the material’s authenticity. These accounts describe a claimed notice and reported requests, not an independently verified copy of the notice or a company confirmation of every item circulating online. The later wave was described as including alleged design documents, concept art and references to unannounced projects. Attribution to a leak, or a request to remove a post, is not proof that each item is authentic.

Does a DMCA request prove the leaks are real?
No. A removal request is a claim about material and its use, not a finding that the material is authentic. The Helpdesk specifically noted that TPC had not confirmed the authenticity of the material discussed. The reporting does not establish that each image, logo or project reference came from an internal source.
That distinction matters because the legal issues can differ depending on whether the material is genuine confidential information or fabricated content that uses protected franchise elements. Neither scenario has been adjudicated in the reports about these posts.
How could authenticity affect the legal analysis?
The European Commission IP Helpdesk outlines two possible legal paths in general terms. Its discussion is EU context, not a ruling about these posts and not legal advice for an individual recipient.

| Material and activity | Potential issue described by the Helpdesk |
|---|---|
| Genuine confidential files obtained, used or disclosed without authorization | May implicate trade-secret protections under EU Directive 2016/943. |
| Fabricated material that reproduces Pokémon characters, logos or other distinctive protected elements | May still raise copyright or trademark issues, even if the leak claim is false. |
| Reporting that describes or links to material | News-reporting or quotation exceptions may permit cautious description and linking, depending on the circumstances. |
| Uploading complete protected works or disclosing confidential documentation | Not authorized by the reporting or quotation exceptions described by the Helpdesk. |
The Helpdesk’s explanation of copyright and trade-secret questions describes potential protections and exceptions; it does not decide whether any particular post infringed rights or disclosed a trade secret.

The October 2025 removal-request reporting should not be conflated with Nintendo’s separate reported effort to identify someone associated with the 2024 Game Freak security breach known as the Teraleak. In April 2025, TechSpot reported that Nintendo had requested a DMCA subpoena seeking identifying information from Discord about a person connected to that earlier breach. The report describes a request, not confirmation that a court granted it. TechSpot’s report on the subpoena request
| Event | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Discord subpoena request, reported April 2025 | Nintendo sought identifying information about a person associated with the October 2024 Teraleak. |
| Social-media removal requests, reported October 2025 | TPC was reported to have sought removal of posts sharing alleged unannounced game material. |
The events concern different reported actions, platforms and targets: a request for user information in connection with the earlier breach, versus requests to remove posts in the later reports.

What should someone do if they receive a notice or report on the material?
The Helpdesk’s practical guidance is to avoid hosting internal files, complete artwork or unannounced logos. It recommends describing what others posted and citing sources rather than reproducing protected material. Its summary says: “Don’t host internal files, full artwork or unannounced logos.” European Commission IP Helpdesk, 28 October 2025
For a person who receives a notice, the Helpdesk advises seeking legal advice and preserving records of publication and removal. The appropriate response depends on the notice, the material and the jurisdiction; the reports do not provide a one-size-fits-all legal determination.
