In the base game, Beldum is found in Lysandre Labs, the underground facility beneath Lysandre Café in Lumiose City. You can reach its room during Main Mission 35, “Reaching Rank A.” If you own the Mega Dimension DLC, Beldum also appears in certain two-star Steel-type Hyperspace Wild Zones.
Where to find Beldum in the base game
Beldum does not appear in the normal Wild Zones or Lumiose City sewers. Enter Lysandre Labs during Main Mission 35, then travel to the westernmost room in the purple section of the facility. This is the regular Beldum encounter room, although Metang can also spawn there.

You need the relevant Level A and Level B Key Cards, which you obtain inside the lab from shiny objects on tables. You must also activate generators to power the lab’s Warp Machines. Available route descriptions do not establish that the Elevator Key is required to reach the Beldum room; it is part of the lab’s story progression, but the room can be reached using the route and key cards above.

Levels and possible spawns
The normal story encounter is a level 49 Beldum. A level 50 Metang can appear in the same room, replacing one of the usual Beldum spawns. A rarer Alpha Beldum can also appear. The exact combination is random, and the room normally contains two overworld Pokémon spawns.
If you are hunting an Alpha or want a particular spawn, save before checking the room. If Beldum disappears or you fail to catch it, leave and re-enter Lysandre Labs to refresh the encounters. The spawns may take a short time to return.
How to catch Beldum
- Approach while Beldum is unaware of you.
- Use ZL to focus on it and the right stick to aim.
- Throw a Poké Ball with ZR from behind to attempt a backstrike.
- Start with an Ultra Ball or another high-performance ball.
- If the throw fails, battle Beldum, reduce its HP, and throw a ball during the brief catch window after the battle.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s field-catch system lets you throw Poké Balls without starting a battle. A backstrike improves the chance when Beldum has not noticed you. Once it is alert or in active combat, the unaware and backstrike bonuses no longer apply.

Why Beldum breaks out so often
Beldum’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A catch rate is 20, rather than the traditional catch rate of 3 used in earlier Pokémon games. The older value is why some otherwise current-looking guides incorrectly describe Beldum as having a catch rate of 3. The value 20 still makes it a difficult catch.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
The result is also affected by Beldum’s HP, its level, the Poké Ball used, your Z-A Royale rank, whether it is an Alpha, whether it has noticed you, whether the throw is a backstrike, and applicable conditions or bonuses. Status conditions such as drowsiness, freezing, burning, poisoning, or paralysis can affect the calculation, as can the Blue Canari Plush if you own it.
Read the capture arrows
When you target a Pokémon, the arrows estimate the current field-catch chance:
| Arrows | Estimated chance |
|---|---|
| 4 | 80–100% |
| 3 | 50–79.9% |
| 2 | 20–49.9% |
| 1 | 0–19.9% |
| 0 | Cannot be caught with a normal field throw at that moment |
The arrows are estimates, not guarantees. If repeated failed throws make Beldum enraged, it cannot be caught with another field Poké Ball. Battle it instead. After you defeat it, throw a ball during the short catch window before it faints. This window uses its own catch bonus, so do not rely on applying a status condition during that period.

Alpha Pokémon are harder to catch before defeat, but the post-defeat catch window gives an Alpha a larger catch multiplier. That makes battling an Alpha a more reliable approach than repeatedly attempting field throws.

Should you use a Quick Ball?
Not automatically. In Z-A, the Quick Ball bonus depends on Beldum remaining unaware. If Beldum has already detected you or entered combat, that bonus does not apply. A stealth backstrike from behind can therefore matter more than using a Quick Ball after detection. For a direct field throw, prioritize an unaware target, a backstrike, and a strong ball.
Beldum’s DLC location: Mega Dimension
The Mega Dimension DLC adds separate Beldum encounters in Hyperspace Wild Zones accessed through Hyperspace Lumiose portals. The Steel-type encounter tables list Beldum as a focus or spawn in two-star Hyperspace Wild Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4. These encounters are much lower level than the Lysandre Labs version, with listed base levels around 17–19 and a listed 1% Alpha chance.
Hyperspace Wild Zones do not unlock immediately when the DLC starts. Progress through the DLC’s initial quest content first. Their locations and available Pokémon are randomized, and the available species can vary by time of day.

Quick Recap
Quick answers to common mistakes
- “Beldum is only in the Wild Zones.” No. The base-game encounter is in Lysandre Labs; the DLC adds Hyperspace Wild Zone encounters.
- “Beldum has catch rate 3.” Not in Z-A. Its listed Z-A catch rate is 20.
- “The Elevator Key is mandatory.” The key belongs to the lab’s story progression, but the documented route to Beldum uses the Level A and Level B Key Cards.
- “A Quick Ball always works.” Its bonus depends on Beldum staying unaware.
- “Beldum cannot respawn.” Leave and re-enter Lysandre Labs to refresh the room’s spawns, allowing for a short respawn delay.
