The Nintendo Switch emulator’s development and official distribution ended on October 1, 2024, after Nintendo reportedly contacted creator gdkchan and offered an agreement requiring him to stop work and remove the project’s organization and related assets under his control. What happened to Ryujinx?
According to the Ryujinx team and community announcement reported by Nintendo Life, Nintendo contacted lead developer gdkchan on September 30, 2024. The following day, October 1, the project was shut down and its official distribution channels disappeared.

The reported agreement required gdkchan to stop work and remove the Ryujinx organization and related assets under his control. The available reports do not describe this as a Nintendo-filed lawsuit against Ryujinx. They also do not report a court judgment or publicly disclosed settlement terms.

That distinction matters. The shutdown was widely described as happening under Nintendo pressure, but the cited reporting does not establish that Nintendo bought Ryujinx, acquired its source code, paid its developers, or formally settled a lawsuit.

The official project was removed
The project’s GitHub repository, github.com/Ryujinx/Ryujinx, returned a 404 error when checked. Reports also described the Ryujinx GitHub organization, release history, related repositories, and downloads as removed or unavailable. The website itself remained reachable in some accounts, but its download function was blank or unusable.
There is therefore no verified current official Ryujinx download or update channel in the cited sources. Old guides directing readers to an active GitHub release page, an official installer, or a functioning updater are outdated.
Was Ryujinx really “immune” to Nintendo?
No. “Immune” was never a verified legal or technical status. Ryujinx remained available longer than Yuzu, another major Switch emulator, but that does not indicate that it had special protection.

The available reporting identifies no immunity agreement, jurisdictional shield, legal ruling, or technical mechanism that prevented Nintendo from pressuring the project. Ryujinx’s shutdown demonstrates the opposite: its continued availability did not guarantee that it would remain online.
Was this a DMCA takedown?
Calling the event a Nintendo DMCA takedown is imprecise. TorrentFreak reported that the project disappeared after direct contact with Nintendo and that there was no visible DMCA takedown page for the Ryujinx repository.
That does not rule out private legal discussions, but it means the public evidence supports a direct-contact shutdown rather than a documented repository-level DMCA notice.

What was Ryujinx available on?
Before the shutdown, Ryujinx was reported to run on Windows 10 and 11, macOS, and Linux-based systems. The cited sources do not verify a final release number, build number, or exact final release date, so claims identifying a specific “last version” should be treated cautiously.

None of those unreleased projects or features became part of an official public Ryujinx release.

Does the shutdown mean emulation itself is illegal?
No such conclusion follows from the shutdown reports. The cited coverage distinguishes emulator software from other conduct, including distributing copyrighted games or system files, bypassing encryption, or monetizing unauthorized access.
The reports do not establish that a court declared Ryujinx itself illegal. The legal risks can instead depend on how an emulator is created, distributed, and used, as well as on the handling of copyrighted games, firmware, keys, and other protected material. Laws also vary by jurisdiction.
What about Ryujinx forks or new builds?
A third-party fork should not automatically be called official Ryujinx. Unless a project documents authorization or a clear chain of continuity, it is more accurate to describe it as an independent fork, successor, or community build.

A February 4, 2026 report from Windows Central said an Xbox emulation community poll selected Ryujinx as a possible future UWP port. At the time of that report, nothing had formally been released. The report did not provide a public installation package, version number, verified interface path, or command syntax.
That means the Xbox discussion should not be confused with an official Ryujinx revival. It described community activity involving Xbox Dev Mode and UWP, not a confirmed public Ryujinx build.
