Pokémon Legends: Z-A gives Mega Evolutions to the final forms of its three first partners: Chikorita becomes Mega Meganium, Tepig becomes Mega Emboar, and Totodile becomes Mega Feraligatr. The game also adds Mega forms for the Kalos starter trio, though those Pokémon are a separate group with a different stated way to earn their Mega Stones.
Which starters can Mega Evolve in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
The game’s official roster identifies Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the player’s first-partner choices. Their final evolutions—not the starter Pokémon themselves—have the listed Mega forms:
| First partner | Final evolution | Mega form |
|---|---|---|
| Chikorita | Meganium | Mega Meganium |
| Tepig | Emboar | Mega Emboar |
| Totodile | Feraligatr | Mega Feraligatr |
These forms appear on The Pokémon Company’s official Pokémon roster. The headline’s “a decade later” is broad editorial framing, not an exact interval established by the official pages cited here.
The Kalos starters have Mega forms too
A separate announcement introduced Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja, the Mega forms of the Kalos starter line’s final evolutions. Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—and their evolved forms—are distinct from Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s three first-partner choices. The Pokémon Company notes that Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja first appeared in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, released in 2013.

There is an important difference in the confirmed stone details: the September 12, 2025 announcement says the Mega Stones for Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja are Ranked Battle promotion rewards and cannot normally be obtained during regular gameplay. The cited roster page does not establish how to obtain the stones for Meganium, Emboar, or Feraligatr, so those acquisition rules should not be inferred from the Kalos trio’s rewards.
How Mega Evolution works
Mega Evolution is temporary, not a permanent new stage in a Pokémon’s evolution line. According to Pokémon’s Mega Evolution explainer, a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with the Mega Stone held by the Pokémon to enable the transformation.

The game’s general adventure guide says Mega Stones can be obtained at locations such as the Stone Emporium or by trading Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc. headquarters. Those are general methods; the guide does not confirm that either applies to any particular starter’s Mega Stone. See the official guide to making the most of your adventure for that broader context.
