Pokémon Legends: Z-A Review: A Welcome Change, With Mega Evolution

Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings real-time battles to Lumiose City—and includes Mega Evolution. Here’s what the new format offers and what Switch buyers should know.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes a meaningful break from the series’ familiar battle format: you and your Pokémon move through real-time encounters, choosing moves while accounting for timing and area of effect. It also includes Mega Evolution, contrary to what the supplied headline might suggest. The change gives battles a fresh rhythm, though TechRadar reviewer Hamish Hector also reported difficulty-scaling issues, battle bugs, and limited variety in Lumiose City.

What changes in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

The adventure takes place in Lumiose City, where redevelopment is planned around people and Pokémon. Rather than traveling through a succession of open regions, players explore the city, visit shops and cafés, and enter wild zones. The Z-A Royale provides a progression competition within that setting. Nintendo’s official game description and Play Nintendo’s feature summary present these as core parts of the game.

The biggest change is combat. Battles are not turn-based: the Trainer and Pokémon move in real time, and the player directly commands moves. Positioning, move timing, and the area a move can affect matter alongside choosing an attack. That can make encounters feel more immediate than the classic menu-driven format, but it also means players who prefer taking turns and considering each choice without real-time movement may find the system less appealing.

The official starter choices are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.

  • Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
  • Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon

  • Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game

Does Pokémon Legends: Z-A have Mega Evolution?

Yes. Mega Evolution is part of the base game, not something absent from it. Nintendo describes a Trainer’s Key Stone resonating with a Pokémon’s Mega Stone to temporarily release additional power; some Pokémon also change type when they Mega Evolve. The game includes Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon that threaten Lumiose City, and defeating them can reward players with Mega Stones. See Nintendo’s product description.

The distinction that matters for a purchase is between the base game’s Mega Evolution features and the separate Mega Dimension DLC. The add-on supplies additional story content and Mega Stones for Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y; it does not introduce Mega Evolution to a game that otherwise lacks it.

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A worth playing?

For players interested in seeing Pokémon battles move beyond turns, the real-time system is the game’s clearest reason to play. It changes the moment-to-moment decisions without discarding recognizable series elements such as Pokémon moves, Mega Evolution, and a structured progression path. The city setting gives the adventure a more focused identity than a journey across a range of environments, which may suit players who enjoy a compact urban hub but disappoint those looking for greater environmental variety.

  • Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
  • As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.

TechRadar’s Hamish Hector reviewed the Nintendo Switch 2 version in October 2025 and described the result as “The final concoction produces a game that lands perfectly between familiar and fresh.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus score. Hector also identified difficulty-scaling problems, battle bugs, and insufficient variety in Lumiose City. TechRadar reported that he had played 25 hours across handheld and docked use and had not finished the story at review time; that figure describes his review playtime, not a completion estimate or performance test. What does Mega Dimension add, and is it required?

Mega Dimension is optional DLC for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo Support says it adds story content and Mega Stones for Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, and that a copy of the base game is required. It is a separate purchase from the main adventure; you do not need it to access the base game’s advertised Mega Evolution features. For current platform and purchase specifics, consult Nintendo Support.

What is available now?

As of October 8, 2026, the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A site says the game is available. Its September 30, 2026 update announced a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension bundle scheduled for Thursday, October 29, 2026. That bundle is announced for a future date relative to October 8, not yet released as of that date; check the official site for updated availability.
