Pokémon Legends: Z-A returns to Kalos by setting its adventure in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to make the city a place for people and Pokémon alike. Its first look also established two major gameplay hooks: battles that unfold in real time and the return of Mega Evolution.
What is Pokémon Legends: Z-A about?
The game takes place in Lumiose City, which Nintendo describes as the largest city in the Kalos region. Rather than ranging across a broad region, the premise centers on the city and a redevelopment project led by Quasartico Inc. The plan is intended to shape Lumiose into a place where people and Pokémon can live together. Nintendo’s official game listing describes a city of cafes, shopping centres, restaurants, waterfronts and parks.

That urban focus gives the return to Kalos a different frame: Lumiose itself is the setting for the adventure, not merely a stop along the way. The official description establishes the redevelopment premise, but does not by itself tell us how every district or story thread develops.
What did the first look reveal about the gameplay?
The March 27, 2025 Nintendo Direct introduced the game’s direction before its eventual launch. Nintendo presented dynamic, real-time battles in which both Trainers and Pokémon move during combat. That is a meaningful change in how battles are described: positioning and movement happen as the fight unfolds, rather than combat being presented as a sequence of stationary turns.
#1 Best Overall
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
The Direct’s official materials identify real-time battles and the Z-A Royale, but do not establish a complete shot-by-shot account of everything shown. The confirmed details are enough to mark the intended gameplay shift without assuming specifics about controls or battle tactics that the official descriptions do not provide.
Mega Evolution returns
Mega Evolution is another central feature. Nintendo explains that a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with a Pokémon’s Mega Stone, enabling the transformation; some Mega-Evolved Pokémon may also change type. Pokémon’s launch announcement connects Mega Evolution with the game’s mysteries and the Z-A Royale progression.

The Z-A Royale
The Z-A Royale is a ranking progression, according to the official launch description. Nintendo’s game listing also describes an optional four-player Z-A Battle Club, where battles have a three-minute time limit. That limit applies to the Battle Club mode, not generally to the main story’s battles.
