The story points to environmental cataclysms followed by humanity evacuating Earth into space—not a confirmed mass extinction. It does not identify one definitive disaster, say how long ago people left, or settle what became of them.
What does Pokémon Pokopia say happened to the humans?
The official premise establishes that people and Pokémon once lived together in a town, but its vegetation has withered and its residents have vanished. Ditto awakens after a long slumber, takes human form, meets Tangrowth, and begins rebuilding. The Pokémon Company’s November 13, 2025 overview describes the disappearance and ecological decline, but does not explain their cause.
Later clues, as interpreted in a spoiler-marked Insider Gaming story guide published March 12, 2026, suggest cataclysmic environmental changes damaged Earth’s environment and atmosphere, prompting humanity to leave the planet. That makes “what wiped out humans” a misleading way to frame the mystery: the available account indicates evacuation, not confirmed death.
What clues point to an evacuation?
The guide describes several damaged areas represented as parts of Kanto: a barren area where Fuchsia City once stood, volcanic ash around Pewter City, and floating remains of Celadon and Saffron. It also reports that Team Rocket built rockets used in humanity’s escape. Hidden lore is said to suggest the evacuation may have been one-way because there was not enough fuel for a return trip.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
These details are a secondary guide’s reading of in-game clues, not a quoted explanation from the developers. The available official premise confirms a vanished population and a withered landscape; it does not independently confirm the guide’s account of the rockets, fuel, or cause.
What is still unknown?
- The exact catastrophe: The available account does not name one definitive event. It does not establish climate change, a particular volcanic disaster, or a Pokémon attack as the official singular cause.
- Humanity’s final fate: The evacuation account does not resolve where people went or whether they survived.
- When they left: The guide says the game does not specify how long ago the departure happened; no precise number of years or centuries is established.
- Whether they return: No human return is confirmed. The guide treats a credits vision involving Ditto’s trainer and a rocket as potentially imaginary, so it should not be read as proof that humanity comes back.
How to read the mystery without overstating it
Keep three levels of evidence separate: the official setup says a once-inhabited place is overgrown and empty; the later evacuation explanation is a guide’s interpretation of spoiler-bearing game clues; and ideas beyond those clues remain fan theories. The most careful answer is that environmental catastrophe appears to have driven humans off Earth, while the specific cause and ultimate outcome remain unresolved.
