Target and Best Buy both planned limited walk-in stock, but neither disclosed store-by-store quantities or guaranteed that arriving at a particular time would get you a console. This is historical guidance: those launch-day offers have passed, and the notices below do not establish current stock.
What were the launch-day options on June 5, 2025?
Nintendo listed June 5, 2025, as the hardware launch date. Its August 2025 sales report later said Switch 2 sold through more than 3.5 million units worldwide in the four days after launch, the highest first-four-day sell-through for one of Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms. Nintendo defines sell-through as its internal estimate of units sold to individual consumers; this global figure does not show how many consoles were available at any particular store.

For people without a preorder, the retailer announcements offered two different in-store approaches. Nintendo’s own My Nintendo Store was not a reliable way to count on delivery by launch day: the company said delivery by June 5 was not guaranteed and directed launch-day hopefuls to participating retailers, according to the Associated Press.
How Target handled walk-in purchases
In a May 29, 2025, notice, Target said stores would sell the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle on June 5 while supplies lasted. It planned to start online sales on Target.com and in the Target app on June 6, not launch day.

Those instructions described Target’s announced launch process, not a promise that every store would have stock for everyone in line.
How Best Buy handled launch night
Best Buy’s May 29, 2025, announcement said nearly all US stores would open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 5 for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. The corresponding local times were 11:01 p.m. Central, 10:01 p.m. Mountain, and 9:01 p.m. Pacific on June 4. The company said it had limited quantities of consoles, games, and accessories, and directed customers to its store locator and Nintendo notifications for launch-specific details.

Unlike Target’s notice, Best Buy’s announcement did not describe a ticket process or publish a purchase limit. It also did not state how many walk-in consoles any store would receive. “Nearly all” stores is not the same as every location, so the location-specific information mattered.
How to compare the announced routes
| Retailer or route | Timing announced for launch | Queue or ticket process | Stock and limits stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target stores | June 5, 2025; the notice did not give a common opening time. | Designated entrance queue; tickets reserved a product for purchase. | Limited by supplies; one per item per guest for the console and bundle. |
| Best Buy stores | 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5, 2025, at nearly all US stores; equivalent times were 11:01 p.m. CT, 10:01 p.m. MT, and 9:01 p.m. PT on June 4. | No ticket process stated in the announcement. | Limited walk-in quantities; no store-level counts or purchase limit stated. |
| My Nintendo Store | Online orders; delivery by June 5, 2025, was not guaranteed. | No in-person process. | Nintendo advised launch-day hopefuls to visit participating retailers. |
The announcements do not support ranking these choices by odds. Target’s ticket system defined how a queue was handled, while Best Buy announced an overnight opening; neither disclosed enough inventory information to calculate which store or arrival time offered a better chance.

What these announcements mean now
The June 2025 dates, hours, ticket rules, and online-sale timing are over. The launch notices and AP’s reporting about high preorder demand—including Walmart preorder stock selling out quickly—are not indicators of present-day availability. Check current retailer listings and delivery estimates directly before making a purchase decision; the sources cited here do not verify stock today.
