For the original Game Boy games, choose the version with the exclusive Pokémon you most want: Red has Growlithe and Scyther, while Blue has Vulpix and Pinsir. The main adventure is substantially the same in both; the important difference is which Pokémon appear. If you want the full set of version exclusives on one save, you will need a compatible way to trade with someone who has the other version.
If you are buying to play on a current Nintendo system, note that the original Red and Blue are not the same games as the Switch releases of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. Those are later remakes, sold separately as digital Switch software.

What is different between Pokémon Red and Blue?
The core Kanto adventure is shared. You travel through the same region, take on the same broad sequence of challenges and pursue the same overall objective. The original instruction manual describes the distinction as “the type and probability of Pokémon appearances.” In practical terms, the versions divide some Pokémon between them: certain species appear in Red but not Blue, and others appear in Blue but not Red.
That means the choice is not a story-choice in the way two completely different role-playing games might be. It is primarily a roster choice. The wild-encounter tables determine which species you can obtain naturally in your copy, while the other version contains the missing species. The western original games each have 11 exclusive Pokémon when evolved forms are counted.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a first playthrough, either game provides the complete Kanto journey. The useful questions are which Pokémon you want to raise, whether you care about collecting both sides of the roster, and whether you have a compatible way to trade. If you are choosing a cartridge as a collectible, the condition and authenticity of that particular item matter more than small gameplay distinctions between versions.
Which Pokémon are exclusive to Red and Blue?
This roster is for the western original Game Boy releases of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. It should not be treated as a roster for the later FireRed and LeafGreen remakes.
| Pokémon Red exclusives | Pokémon Blue exclusives |
|---|---|
| Ekans, Arbok | Sandshrew, Sandslash |
| Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume | Vulpix, Ninetales |
| Mankey, Primeape | Meowth, Persian |
| Growlithe, Arcanine | Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel |
| Scyther | Magmar |
| Electabuzz | Pinsir |
The roster follows Serebii’s western Red/Blue listing. Evolved forms count toward the total: for example, Red’s Ekans and Arbok are two of its 11 exclusives, and Oddish, Gloom and Vileplume are three. The same counting applies to Blue’s Sandshrew/Sandslash, Vulpix/Ninetales, Meowth/Persian and Bellsprout’s three-stage line.
Pick Red if you want its exclusive lines
Red is the straightforward choice if you particularly want Growlithe or its evolution Arcanine. Scyther is another prominent reason to choose Red, and Electabuzz is also available only in the Red roster. The remaining Red groups are Ekans and Arbok, Oddish through Vileplume, and Mankey with Primeape.
Choosing Red does not make those Pokémon stronger by itself, and it does not create a separate campaign. It simply gives you the opportunity to encounter the listed species in that version rather than needing a trade for them. If one of these Pokémon is central to the team you have imagined, selecting Red from the start is the simplest route.
Pick Blue if you want its exclusive lines
Blue suits players drawn to Vulpix and Ninetales, or to Pinsir. Its other exclusive groups are Sandshrew and Sandslash, Meowth and Persian, Bellsprout through Victreebel, and Magmar.
As with Red, the practical benefit is access in your own game. You can build a team around a Blue-exclusive line without arranging a trade for that species. If you are deciding between the games on character preference alone, list the Pokémon you most want and see which column contains more of them. That gives you a more useful answer than treating one version as universally superior.

Start with the species you actually plan to use, not just the box art. Red is a good fit when Growlithe/Arcanine or Scyther is the deciding attraction. Blue is a good fit when Vulpix/Ninetales or Pinsir is the priority. If no single Pokémon matters, compare the complete columns and choose the side whose lines appeal to you more.

Remember that the table lists species and evolved forms, not a ranking of team quality. The western original releases establish the encounter split, not a claim that one version has a stronger overall team, easier gyms or a superior ending. Both versions deliver the same central Kanto adventure, so a preference for the roster is the defensible tie-breaker.
Do you need to trade?
No trade is needed to choose a version and play its main adventure. You can finish the story using Pokémon obtainable in your own copy. Trading matters if your goal is to bring the Pokémon exclusive to both versions together on one save.
Because each game has species the other lacks, one copy by itself cannot supply the complete set of Red and Blue version exclusives. A player who wants every species represented on a single save needs a compatible trade route involving the other release. That route depends on the game generation and hardware you are using, so confirm compatibility before buying solely for collection completion.

There are two different goals here:
- Story play: choose either version and play normally; a trading partner is optional.
- Collection completion: plan access to the opposite version and a supported trading method before you begin.
Nintendo’s historical product information for the original games identifies 3DS Virtual Console releases, and Nintendo’s account of those releases describes wireless trading and battling. That information does not establish that those older versions can currently be purchased or that a particular player has access to a compatible trading partner. Treat “I can trade” as a platform-specific question, not an assumption based on owning both names.
Original Game Boy releases or the Switch remakes?
The original Red and Blue are Game Boy games. FireRed and LeafGreen are Game Boy Advance remakes released in 2004. Nintendo released the remakes as separate standalone digital software for Switch in February 2026. They share the Kanto setting and the broad premise, but they are not the original Game Boy products.
Choose based on which generation and platform you want, not just on the fact that all four titles involve Kanto. A buyer seeking the original release should look for the Game Boy versions. A player who wants a current Switch purchase should compare FireRed and LeafGreen as remakes and should not use the original Red/Blue exclusive table as a substitute for checking remake-specific encounters.
| Choice | What it is | Established platform and feature context |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue | Original Game Boy releases | Nintendo’s product page records 3DS Virtual Console releases on February 27, 2016; that historical date does not establish current purchase availability. |
| Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen | 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes, released as separate digital Switch software in February 2026 | Nintendo says the Switch versions support local wireless trades and battles, do not require Nintendo Switch Online, and do not support online play. |
Do not assume that the original games’ exclusive roster or connectivity details apply unchanged to the remakes. The facts about Switch trading, battles, membership requirements and online play refer to the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen.
What Switch trading and HOME support mean
The Switch remakes support local wireless trading and battling, but not online play. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for those local wireless features. “Local wireless” means you should plan for the participating systems to be together; it is not a promise of internet matchmaking.

On October 7, 2026, The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon HOME connectivity for the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen, beginning in October 2026. Pokémon transferred onward to other games can move forward, but they cannot return to FireRed or LeafGreen afterward. Consider that one-way restriction before transferring a Pokémon you may still want to use in the remake.
HOME support is a feature of those Switch remakes. It is not evidence that original Game Boy Red and Blue connect to HOME. Keep the product identities separate when reading a listing, a feature description or a transfer guide.
Nintendo’s FAQ says it has nothing to announce about other potential Pokémon titles for the Nintendo Classics collections. That is not a promise that original Red and Blue will never be added; it simply means there is no announced Classics release to use as a purchase assumption here.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if you want a physical original cartridge?
The original games were released as Game Boy software on Game Pak cartridges. A physical purchase today is therefore a used-market purchase. Condition, label quality, battery status, shell, region and authenticity belong to the specific listing; they are not guaranteed by the title alone.
Before buying a physical copy, work through this checklist:
- Confirm the product: make sure the listing is for the original Game Boy Red or Blue, not a Game Boy Advance remake, reproduction cartridge or unrelated regional edition.
- Check the region: verify that the regional version matches the hardware and collection you intend to use.
- Inspect photographs: look for clear images of the actual cartridge, label and shell rather than only stock art.
- Read condition details: distinguish a tested, working item from an untested or parts-only listing, and note missing labels or damaged shells.
- Review seller protections: understand the return policy and the marketplace’s process if the cartridge is misdescribed or fails to work.
- Plan your trade setup separately: owning an original cartridge does not by itself prove that you have a compatible trading route.
Current stock, prices and the authenticity of any particular listing have not been established here. Do not treat a quoted marketplace price, a seller’s photograph or an “original” label as verification without checking the item and the seller’s protections. If you are buying primarily to play, a cheaper but questionable cartridge may create more risk than value. If you are collecting, condition and authenticity may justify a different choice, but those are purchase-specific judgments.
For a shopping search, terms such as Pokémon Red Game Boy cartridge or Pokémon Blue Game Boy cartridge identify the original format more clearly than a broad search for “Pokémon Red.” Always compare the listing details with the original Game Boy/Game Pak identity.

A collector may care about an original cartridge, packaging, label condition and regional identity. A player may care more about having a functional copy and a practical way to access the adventure. Neither goal makes Red or Blue intrinsically better. The version-exclusive decision still comes first for the Pokémon roster, while the purchase condition is a separate question.

If you want a current digital purchase, the Switch options are the 2004 remakes, not a confirmed digital reissue of the original Game Boy games. If you want the historical original, verify what platform or cartridge you are actually buying. Nintendo’s February 27, 2016 date for the 3DS Virtual Console versions is historical product information and does not establish that those listings remain purchasable today.
A step-by-step decision guide
- Choose the era: decide whether you want the original Game Boy release or a later remake. If you want Switch software, compare FireRed and LeafGreen, not the original Red/Blue products.
- Mark your must-have Pokémon: write down the exclusive species you most want to encounter yourself.
- Pick the matching version: select Red for its Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, Scyther and Electabuzz groups, or Blue for its Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, Magmar and Pinsir groups.
- Set a collection goal: if you only want the story, stop there. If you want both exclusive rosters, identify the compatible trade route before purchasing.
- Check platform features: for Switch remakes, local wireless trading and battling do not require Nintendo Switch Online, while online play is unsupported. For original releases, do not assume modern HOME or online features.
- Inspect the purchase: for a used Game Boy cartridge, verify region, authenticity signals, condition, photographs and seller protections. Prices and stock vary by listing.
Quick answers to common buying questions
Is the story different in Red and Blue?
No major separate story is established for the original western releases. The main Kanto adventure is substantially the same; the meaningful distinction is the type and probability of Pokémon appearances.
Which is better for a first playthrough?
Neither is universally better. Pick Red if its exclusive Pokémon appeal more to you, especially Growlithe/Arcanine or Scyther. Pick Blue if you prefer Vulpix/Ninetales or Pinsir. If the roster does not matter, either version supports the shared adventure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many version-exclusive Pokémon are there?
Each western original game has 11 exclusives when evolved forms are counted. That is a game-content count, not an industry statistic: Red has the 11 species listed in its column and Blue has the 11 in its column.
Can I complete the combined Red/Blue exclusive roster without trading?
Not from one copy alone. Since each release omits species found in the other, you need a compatible way to trade if you want both sides on one save.
Do the original games work with Pokémon HOME?
The announced HOME feature applies to the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen. It is not evidence that the original Game Boy Red and Blue connect to HOME.
Do the Switch remakes require Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo says local wireless trading and battling in the Switch remakes do not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also says online play is not supported.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which version has Growlithe and Arcanine?
The original western Pokémon Red has the Growlithe and Arcanine line. Blue has Vulpix and Ninetales instead.
Which version has Scyther and Pinsir?
Scyther is exclusive to the original Red roster, while Pinsir is exclusive to the original Blue roster.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I play all of Red or Blue without another player?
Yes. Trading is optional for the main adventure. It becomes necessary only if you want the version-exclusive Pokémon from both games on one save.
Are FireRed and LeafGreen the same games as Red and Blue?
No. FireRed and LeafGreen are 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes, released as separate digital Switch software in February 2026. They share the Kanto setting but are distinct products from the original Game Boy releases.
Can I battle or trade online in the Switch remakes?
Nintendo says the Switch remakes support local wireless trading and battling, do not require Nintendo Switch Online for those features, and do not support online play.
What happens when I move a Pokémon from the Switch remake to HOME?
The Pokémon can move onward to other games, but after transfer it cannot return to FireRed or LeafGreen.
The Bottom Line
Buy original Pokémon Red for Growlithe/Arcanine, Scyther and its other exclusive lines; buy original Pokémon Blue for Vulpix/Ninetales, Pinsir and its exclusive lines. The adventure is substantially the same, so trading access—not a different story—determines whether you can collect both rosters. If you want a current Switch purchase, compare the separate FireRed and LeafGreen remakes and remember that their local wireless and HOME features do not apply automatically to the original Game Boy games.
