To find what a Pokémon is weak to in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, match the type of the move you plan to use against the target’s type. The chart below is organized by attacking move type: it shows which defending types take super-effective damage, which resist the attack, and which are immune.

How to read the Sword and Shield type chart

Each entry describes an attack’s effect on the defending Pokémon. For example, if a Pokémon is weak to Fire, a Fire-type move is super effective against it. The Pokémon’s own type does not determine the type of move it uses.

  • Super effective: the attack deals 2× damage.
  • Not very effective: the attack deals 0.5× damage.
  • No effect: the attack deals 0× damage because the defender is immune.
  • Neutral: none of those modifiers applies, so the type matchup does not change damage.

The Pokémon Company’s Sword and Shield battle guide demonstrates type effectiveness in battle. For the complete matchup matrix and multipliers below, this chart follows GameWith’s Sword and Shield type chart, marked updated 1 October 2026. The Pokémon Company’s general type chart supplies broader type-chart context, rather than a game-specific matrix.

Attacking type: what it hits super effectively

Read across the row for the type of move you are considering. The listed defending types take 2× damage from that attack.

How dual types change the result

For a Pokémon with two types, apply the attack’s modifier against each defending type, then multiply the results. The same attacking move can therefore be especially effective—or less useful—against a dual-type target.

  • One weakness and one resistance cancel to neutral damage (2× × 0.5×).
  • Two resistances combine to 0.25× damage (0.5× × 0.5×).
  • If either defending type is immune to the attack, the combined result is 0×.

Use the chart as a battle baseline

Check the move’s type, not just the type of the Pokémon using it. Then compare it with both of the opponent’s types, if the opponent has two. The chart gives the type matchup baseline; it does not account for every ability or move-specific battle exception. The official battle guide provides game-specific battle context, while the detailed matrix and combined multipliers here are from the GameWith reference.
