A pomegranate is the fruit of Punica granatum, a small fruit-bearing tree. Its edible parts are the juicy arils—the seed-containing portions packed inside a tough, leathery husk. You can eat the arils fresh, buy them ready to eat, or use pomegranate as juice; those forms differ in preparation and use, and they should not be assumed to have identical nutrition or health effects.

What is a pomegranate?

Pomegranates grow on trees and have been cultivated across several regions, including the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the southwestern United States. Inside the outer husk are many arils: juicy, seed-containing structures that are the part most often eaten.

Fruit traits vary by cultivar. Husk and aril color, seed hardness, and other characteristics are not the same in every pomegranate, so a description of one variety should not be treated as a rule for all of them. A USDA Agricultural Research Service review published in 2007 described thousands of cultivars and noted that Wonderful was commonly grown worldwide at that time; those are historical observations, not a current count or market survey.

How do you eat a pomegranate?

The simplest approach is to separate the arils from the husk and membranes, then eat the arils fresh or use them in food. Packaged arils skip that preparation. Juice is another option for drinking or cooking, but it is a different form of the fruit.

  1. Cut through the outer skin. Score the husk shallowly rather than cutting deeply through the arils.
  2. Open the fruit into sections. Pull the sections apart over a bowl so the arils can be removed without crushing them.
  3. Separate the arils. Remove the juicy arils from the pale inner membranes and discard the inedible husk and membranes.
  4. Eat or use the arils. They can be eaten as they are or added to dishes. If you prefer less preparation, choose packaged arils or juice.

For choosing a whole fruit, size, skin color, acidity, and soluble solids are among the maturity indicators discussed in a USDA-hosted horticulture reference. Those technical indicators depend on cultivar and are not a universal at-home ripeness test.

Whole fruit, arils, or juice: which form should you choose?

Form Preparation and convenience What you get Typical use
Whole fruit Requires opening the husk and separating the arils. The arils are inside the fruit; the husk and membranes are not the edible portion. Choose it when you want to separate the arils yourself.
Ready-to-eat arils Convenient because the arils are already separated. Arils; check the product label for its exact contents. Eating fresh or adding to food.
Juice Ready to drink or use in cooking. Juice rather than whole arils; do not assume its nutrition matches whole fruit. Drinking or cooking.

Nutrition figures need to match the specific form and database entry being discussed. USDA FoodData Central contains records with different data types and update schedules, so a number for whole fruit, arils, juice, or a branded product is not interchangeable with a number for another form. A 2008 USDA Agricultural Research Service abstract reported 4 g of dietary fiber per 100 g in its analyzed whole-fruit samples, which included seeds; the authors contrasted that result with an older USDA value that excluded seeds. That study-specific historical figure is not a current universal nutrition label value.

Is pomegranate good for you?

Pomegranate is a food, but claims that it prevents or treats disease go beyond what current evidence establishes. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says human research is limited, and many studies have used juice rather than supplements. Its April 5, 2024 bulletin states: “However, the limited research done so far has not shown benefits of pomegranate in preventing or treating health problems.”

  • NCCIH says pomegranate juice or extract may help reduce blood pressure, but more research is needed.
  • Studies suggest a small possible reduction in blood glucose, but this is not established treatment advice.
  • Studies have not demonstrated clear effects on cholesterol and other blood lipids.
  • For other promoted health conditions, evidence available to NCCIH is too limited for it to draw conclusions about usefulness.

Laboratory or antioxidant findings do not by themselves show that eating pomegranate prevents or treats illness in people. Do not use pomegranate in place of prescribed care or treat a supplement as equivalent to the fruit or its juice.

Safety: juice, extracts, and other plant parts

NCCIH says pomegranate juice is believed to be safe and pomegranate extract may also be safe. That assessment does not apply automatically to every part of the plant: large amounts of root, stem, or peel may be harmful. Possible digestive symptoms and reported allergic reactions are also noted.

NCCIH says juice during pregnancy or breastfeeding may be safe, but little is known about other forms or plant parts in those circumstances. If you have a medical concern, an allergy, or questions about supplements, ask a qualified health professional rather than relying on a general safety summary.

Does pomegranate need special storage?

USDA ARS summaries of 2022 and 2024 studies describe specialized isochoric preservation experiments on whole fruit, fresh-cut arils, and juice. The studies examined defined experimental conditions, including temperature and pressure for the fruit work and microbial and quality outcomes over four weeks for the juice work. They are not household storage instructions and do not establish how long a pomegranate or juice stays safe in an ordinary kitchen.
