Spoilers for Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4 – Safe Haven. Yarnaby is Experiment 1166, a lion-like Bigger Bodies creature created from Playcare orphan Quinn Navidson. In Chapter 4, he serves as Harley Sawyer’s conditioned enforcer—not the chapter’s main villain—and hunts the Player through the Containment Zone before dying in a molten vat during the final chase.
Who is Yarnaby?
Yarnaby is Playtime Co.’s toy designation for Experiment 1166. He has a large, anthropomorphic lion-like body, a multicolored mane and a face that opens to reveal a second internal mouth.

Despite his name and yarn-covered appearance, Yarnaby is not simply a monster made entirely from yarn. The yarn wraps around his Bigger Body form; it is part of his visual design rather than proof that his whole body consists of yarn. The name combines “yarn” with “Barnaby.”
Yarnaby was created through the Bigger Bodies Initiative, meaning a human child was used as the basis for the experiment. That child was Quinn Navidson, a Playcare orphan.

Quinn Navidson’s story
Most of Quinn’s human backstory comes from the Chapter 4 Icepick ARG, rather than from an extended flashback in the game.
Quinn was assessed at the Game Station and initially performed about average, scoring 8 out of 15 across Musical Memory, Wack-a-Wuggy and Statues. Harley Sawyer then took a personal interest in him and manipulated him into pushing harder during a later assessment. Quinn’s physical performance improved, but his behavior became increasingly disturbing: during Wack-a-Wuggy, he bit the heads off several toy targets.
The ARG’s recovered files connected Quinn to Experiment 1166. The historical ARG terminal procedure used the command recover with the password 1166; repeated successful downloads revealed different Quinn and Yarnaby documents. That was an ARG process, not an in-game Chapter 4 command, and the original ARG website is no longer operational.

Why does Yarnaby obey Harley Sawyer?
Yarnaby’s loyalty is the result of conditioning and emotional manipulation, not a genuine partnership with Sawyer. Recovered experiment documents describe him as unusually docile, impressionable, agile and obedient toward selected staff. Sawyer exploited those traits by isolating him and becoming his primary personal contact.

The relationship was useful to Sawyer, who wanted a controllable experiment. He was not acting as a caring guardian to Quinn. Once Sawyer was removed, Yarnaby became grief-stricken and increasingly aggressive toward other people. That history explains why Chapter 4 presents him as the Doctor’s “loyal lapdog”: Sawyer engineered Yarnaby’s dependence on him.
Yarnaby’s role in Chapter 4
Yarnaby is a major monster in Safe Haven, but he is not the chapter’s main villain. He is a secondary antagonist and Sawyer’s enforcer. The Doctor releases him to hunt the Player in the Containment Zone, while the chapter’s larger conflict involves Sawyer, the Prototype, Doey and Safe Haven.
Yarnaby’s first major sequence is primarily a stealth encounter. The objective is:

AVOID DETECTION FROM YARNABYThe Player must use hiding spaces, vents, environmental routes and the GrabPack to avoid detection. Doey the Doughman helps by distracting Yarnaby and guiding the Player away from him. The pursuit eventually moves through storage and server areas before the Player escapes.

How to avoid Yarnaby
In the No Man’s Land section, noise is especially important. Sprinting and using the GrabPack can attract Yarnaby, so moving quickly without a plan is dangerous. Hiding works reliably only when the Player is both out of Yarnaby’s line of sight and far enough away that he cannot continue hearing them.
The sequence follows this progression:
- Power up the machine stations using hand scanners.
- Activate all three stations.
- Find a way out of No Man’s Land.
- Survive the final chase.

RUNListen for Yarnaby, avoid unnecessary sprinting and move between cover rather than assuming any hiding spot is automatically safe.
How Yarnaby dies
The Player does not defeat Yarnaby with a weapon or a conventional boss attack. During the final chase, the Player swings across a gap using a chain and hook above a vat of molten material. Yarnaby attempts to follow, catches on the hook and falls into the vat. His yarn covering catches fire, and he dies from the resulting burns.

Why old Yarnaby death videos look different
Launch footage is not necessarily the final presentation. Patch 6, released March 6, 2025, revised the sequence to clarify that Yarnaby is caught on the hook before falling into the molten vat. Some January 2025 videos show an earlier version in which the cause of his ignition was less clearly presented.
Anyone comparing screenshots or walkthrough footage should check whether it comes from the original January 30, 2025 release or a post-Patch 6 build. There is also a more recent version caveat: Mob Entertainment announced a rollback of a major Chapters 1–4 update on February 12, 2026, after serious problems were introduced. Technical details and footage should therefore be dated rather than treated as interchangeable.

Early builds had several problems that could make the encounter appear unfair or inconsistent. Reported issues included Yarnaby failing to spawn, appearing too close to the Player, detecting the Player too easily, ignoring the protection of hiding spaces, becoming stationary after repeated deaths and triggering broken jumpscare behavior when killing the Player from a sidle or hiding position.

What the common explanations get wrong
“Yarnaby is Chapter 4’s main villain.”
No. He is one of the chapter’s major threats, but he is a secondary antagonist who works for Harley Sawyer. The central conflict extends beyond Yarnaby and includes the Doctor, the Prototype, Doey and Safe Haven.

“Yarnaby is made entirely of yarn.”
That is misleading. Yarn covers his Bigger Body form, while the character itself is depicted and documented as a lion-like experiment.
“Yarnaby survives the lava.”
The current ending shows him falling into the molten vat, catching fire, failing to escape and dying. There is no supported current Chapter 4 ending in which he survives.
“The game fully explains Quinn’s history.”
Not exactly. The game identifies Yarnaby as Experiment 1166 and shows his connection to Sawyer, but the detailed Game Station assessments and Quinn-specific history were disclosed through the Icepick ARG.
