Games already running at 60 frames per second on Xbox Series S should be relatively easy to port to Nintendo Switch 2, according to Virtuos technical director Eoin O’ Grady. The qualification matters: his assessment is about likely candidates, not a guarantee for every game. CPU-heavy titles and games that need to hold their performance target may require additional optimization.
What the developer said about Series S games on Switch 2
In a Wccftech interview published July 7, 2025, Eoin O’ Grady, technical director at Black Shamrock, a Virtuos subsidiary, said: “Any game shipping at 60 FPS on the Series S should easily port to the Switch 2.” (Wccftech interview.)

He also considered Series S games running at 30 FPS good port candidates if they are GPU-bound. But titles with demanding physics, animation, or other CPU-intensive work could need extra optimization to reach their frame-rate target—or struggle to maintain it.
Why the workload matters more than a simple hardware comparison
O’ Grady described Switch 2’s GPU as slightly below the Series S, with the gap more noticeable in handheld mode. He said DLSS makes their overall GPU capabilities comparable. He placed Switch 2’s CPU closer to the PlayStation 4, describing it as a little more powerful than the PS4.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Those broad comparisons do not establish how a specific game will perform. A GPU-bound game and one limited by physics, animation, or other CPU work can react differently to the same hardware constraints. A 60 FPS Series S release is a promising starting point in O’ Grady’s view, but the game’s actual bottleneck and performance target still matter.
DLSS can help, but it is not a turnkey porting fix
DLSS is a potential way to improve image reconstruction, not an automatic solution to porting challenges. O’ Grady said developers cannot simply transfer a PC DirectX DLSS implementation unchanged: it needs to be integrated through Nintendo’s NVN2 graphics API. He noted that this work may have been deferred for some initial ports.

That distinction is important: a game’s theoretical benefit from DLSS does not mean its Switch 2 version will use it, or that GPU and CPU demands will disappear. Porting still involves platform-specific implementation and optimization.
What to check when judging a specific port
The interview offers a framework for assessing candidates, but no title-by-title benchmark results. For a particular game, useful questions include:
Rank #3
- 【Ultimate Nintendo Switch 2 Bundle – Ready to Play】Includes the complete Nintendo Switch 2 console and a full-game download of Mario Kart World, so you can start racing right out of the box. Perfect for gamers of all ages and playstyles.
- 【Next-Gen Hybrid Gaming with Stunning Visuals】Experience a vivid 7.9‑inch 1080p LCD touchscreen with HDR support, and enjoy 4K TV output at up to 60 fps when docked — for immersive gameplay at home or on the go.
- 【Versatile 3 Play Modes】Seamlessly switch between Handheld, Tabletop, and TV modes — all featuring intuitive controls and smooth performance, wherever you choose to play.
- 【Enhanced Social Gaming with GameChat & Multiplayer】Connect with friends locally, enjoy online multiplayer with up to 24 players, and use voice chat via GameChat (internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership required after trial period).
- 【Powerful Storage & Joy‑Con 2 Controllers】Includes 256 GB internal storage (expandable with microSD), magnetic Joy‑Con 2 controllers, docking station, HDMI cable, AC adapter, grip, and straps — everything you need for the ultimate gaming setup.
- What is its performance target? A game already shipping at 60 FPS on Series S fits O’ Grady’s strongest candidate category; a 30 FPS game depends in part on whether it is GPU-bound.
- Is it CPU- or GPU-limited? Complex physics, animation, and other CPU-heavy workloads may make the target harder to reach.
- How does it behave in handheld mode? The interview says the GPU difference from Series S is more noticeable when Switch 2 is handheld, so docked results alone do not answer the portable-performance question.
- What image reconstruction and internal resolution does it use? These affect how GPU demands are managed, but the interview does not provide figures for individual games.
- Has the developer implemented platform-specific features? DLSS requires integration through NVN2; its availability should be confirmed for the specific port rather than assumed.
What this assessment does—and does not—establish
O’ Grady’s comments are a developer’s qualitative engineering assessment, not a measured benchmark or a promise about every Series S game. ExtremeTech’s July 7, 2025 article syndicated by Yahoo Tech summarized the same position; it is corroboration of the interview’s framing, not an independent test.
