PowerColor Radeon RX 9070 XT Red Devil, Hellhound and Reaper GPUs Look Menacing

PowerColor’s menacing RX 9070 XT lineup uses the same GPU across Red Devil, Hellhound and Reaper, but the cards differ sharply in cooler size, power delivery, lighting, clocks and price positioning.

PowerColor’s Radeon RX 9070 XT lineup is not three different GPUs. The Red Devil, Hellhound and Reaper are three custom versions of the same AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, each aimed at a different buyer: the feature-heavy Red Devil, the balanced Hellhound and the simpler, value-focused Reaper.

PowerColor announced the families on February 28, 2025, ahead of AMD’s March 6 retail launch for the Radeon RX 9000 series. Their aggressive styling is the obvious headline, but the more important differences are cooler size, factory clocks, power delivery, lighting, connectors and case compatibility.

The three cards share the same fundamental GPU and memory configuration: 4,096 stream processors, 16GB of GDDR6 memory running at 20Gbps, a 256-bit memory interface and PCIe 5.0 x16 connectivity. Each provides one HDMI 2.1b output and three DisplayPort 2.1a outputs. See the official PowerColor announcement and individual product pages for the full specifications.

Why the cards look “menacing”

The intimidating appearance comes from PowerColor’s industrial design rather than a special GPU architecture. The Red Devil uses a dark, angular shroud with red accents, prominent branding and the Hellstone RGB element. The Hellhound is more restrained, with its signature blue lighting and a switchable Dark mode. The Reaper drops much of the decorative treatment for a simpler dark exterior.

That visual hierarchy is deliberate: Red Devil is the statement product, Hellhound occupies the middle, and Reaper is the understated option. The differences matter if you are matching a themed build, but lighting and shroud design do not automatically translate into higher frame rates.

Red Devil: the flagship-style model

The Red Devil RX 9070 XT, model RX9070XT 16G-E/OC, is the largest and most elaborate card in the range. In OC mode, PowerColor lists a game clock of up to 2,520MHz and a boost clock of up to 3,060MHz. Its standard or silent profile is listed at up to 2,460MHz game and 3,010MHz boost.

Its board measures 340 × 132 × 69mm, or 352 × 149 × 69mm with the bracket, and occupies three slots. That physical specification is more important to many buyers than the aggressive styling. A front-mounted radiator, drive cage or adjacent expansion card can turn the Red Devil into an awkward fit.

PowerColor also equips it with three 8-pin PCIe power connectors, a 12-layer PCB with a 2oz power layer, an upgraded VRM design and Honeywell PTM7950 thermal material. The product page lists a 900W minimum system-power recommendation. That is PowerColor’s recommendation for this SKU, not a universal requirement for every RX 9070 XT system; CPU choice, PSU quality, transient behavior and total system load still matter.

The Red Devil’s larger cooler and power hardware are designed to provide additional thermal and overclocking headroom. They do not prove that the card will be faster, quieter or cooler than every Hellhound or Reaper. Those outcomes require independent, model-specific testing.

Some Red Devil packages may include enthusiast extras such as a GPU support bracket or a limited-edition metal keycap. Check the exact regional package before treating an accessory as included.

Hellhound: the likely middle ground

The Hellhound RX 9070 XT, model RX9070XT 16G-L/OC, sits between the other two cards in both specifications and positioning. Its OC profile reaches up to 2,460MHz game and 3,010MHz boost, while the standard or silent profile is listed at up to 2,400MHz game and 2,970MHz boost.

Its board measures 332 × 122 × 57mm, with a 346 × 151 × 57mm dimension listed with the bracket. It uses a 2.5-slot cooler and two 8-pin connectors, with an 800W minimum system-power recommendation. That makes it less demanding than the Red Devil while remaining a substantial card rather than a genuinely compact two-slot design.

PowerColor lists PTM7950 thermal material and nickel-plated copper heat pipes. The lighting can use the Hellhound’s Icy Blue appearance or be switched to Dark mode. There is also a white Hellhound Spectral White edition for builders who want a matching white system. Standard, Spectral White and Reva editions have separate product listings and should not be assumed to share identical dimensions or specifications.

ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB GDDR6 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI/DP 2.1, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, Dual-ball Fan Bearings, dual BIOS, ASUS GPU Guard
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence

For a conventional gaming PC, Hellhound is the most obvious potential sweet spot if its price is reasonably close to the Reaper and well below the Red Devil. That is a product-positioning inference, not a benchmark result.

Reaper: the restrained, value-oriented option

The Reaper RX 9070 XT, model RX9070XT 16G-A, retains the same 4,096-stream-processor GPU and 16GB of GDDR6 memory but uses a simpler exterior and more conservative clock positioning. PowerColor lists its standard or silent game clock at up to 2,400MHz.

It is intended for buyers who want the RX 9070 XT platform without paying for the Red Devil’s elaborate board, cooler, lighting and accessories. The likely trade-offs are less decorative hardware, fewer premium features and potentially less overclocking headroom. The likely advantages are a lower price and a less visually dominant card.

PowerColor’s available official Reaper information does not expose every physical-dimension and power figure as clearly as the Red Devil and Hellhound pages. Confirm the exact regional SKU before buying, especially if your case has tight GPU clearance or your PSU has limited PCIe power cables. The Reaper is still a custom PowerColor board; it should not be described as a reference card.

What actually changes in performance?

Do not expect three radically different performance classes. All three use the same RX 9070 XT GPU configuration, memory capacity, memory speed and memory bus. The most likely differences are caused by:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Factory clock settings and power limits.
  • How well each cooler sustains boost clocks during long workloads.
  • Fan curves, firmware and temperature targets.
  • Overclocking or undervolting headroom.
  • Power consumption, noise and temperatures.

The Red Devil’s higher listed clocks may produce a small factory-overclock advantage, but a higher boost number does not imply a proportional gaming gain. Actual results depend on the game, resolution, workload, firmware, ambient temperature and the individual GPU sample.

Likewise, a larger heatsink may allow lower fan speeds, but cooler size alone cannot establish which model is quietest. Coil whine, acoustics and sustained temperatures require controlled testing. The launch announcement establishes product positioning and specifications, not independent gaming, noise or thermal results.

Compatibility checklist before you buy

  1. Measure GPU length. The Red Devil’s 340mm board length can conflict with front radiators, fans or drive cages. Account for the bracket and front-panel clearance as well.
  2. Check thickness. Red Devil occupies three slots. Hellhound occupies 2.5 slots and can obstruct adjacent PCIe slots.
  3. Plan power cables. Red Devil needs three 8-pin connectors; Hellhound uses two. Confirm that the PSU has separate, suitable PCIe cables and enough room to route them.
  4. Compare PSU guidance with your complete system. Treat the 900W and 800W figures as PowerColor recommendations for the respective SKUs, not as universal laws.
  5. Check airflow. Large triple-fan cards need adequate intake and exhaust space, particularly in compact or front-radiator builds.
  6. Consider vertical mounting. A vertical mount can restrict intake clearance and may require a compatible riser and case layout.
  7. Verify the exact SKU. Hellhound variants and regional Reaper listings may differ in dimensions, accessories or other specifications.

Which PowerColor RX 9070 XT should you choose?

Choose Red Devil if:

  • Your case supports a 340mm-long, 69mm-thick, three-slot card.
  • You already have a high-capacity, high-quality PSU with three suitable 8-pin connections.
  • You value the RGB implementation, premium PCB and enthusiast-oriented power delivery.
  • You plan to experiment with overclocking or undervolting.
  • The price premium over Hellhound is modest.

Choose Hellhound if:

  • You want a balance of cooler hardware, size, appearance and price.
  • Your case supports a large 2.5-slot card.
  • Two 8-pin connectors are preferable to three.
  • You like the Icy Blue lighting, Dark mode or Spectral White design.
  • The Red Devil’s extra size and cost are difficult to justify.

Choose Reaper if:

  • The main goal is RX 9070 XT performance per dollar.
  • RGB, premium accessories and elaborate board features do not matter.
  • You prefer a less conspicuous card.
  • It is meaningfully cheaper than the Hellhound.
  • You have confirmed the exact card’s dimensions, power requirements and warranty.

Launch context and pricing caution

AMD announced the Radeon RX 9070-series launch on February 28, 2025, with retail availability targeted for March 6, 2025. AMD’s launch MSRP for the RX 9070 XT was $599, but that figure should not be treated as a current price for a PowerColor partner card. Custom-card pricing varies by country, retailer, tax, stock and date, and premium models can carry additional launch pricing.

The practical comparison is not simply “which card has the highest clock?” It is how much extra the Red Devil costs over Hellhound or Reaper, and whether independent testing shows meaningful benefits in temperatures, acoustics or sustained performance. If the Red Devil premium is large, Hellhound is likely easier to justify. If Reaper is substantially cheaper and fits the case, it may be the more rational purchase.

The Bottom Line

PowerColor’s Red Devil, Hellhound and Reaper RX 9070 XT cards are different implementations of the same GPU, not three separate performance tiers. Red Devil buys larger cooling, more elaborate power hardware and premium styling; Hellhound offers the most balanced design; Reaper focuses on simplicity and price. For most buyers, the right choice will depend less on the small factory-clock differences than on live pricing, case clearance, PSU capacity and the value placed on cooling, lighting and enthusiast features.
