Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, check:
- Which program is named in the error or shortcut?
preferences.dllis historically associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, not Windows itself. - When does the error appear? If it appears when launching Musicmatch, repair that application first. If another program names the file, inspect that program’s installation path.
- Where is the file expected? It normally belongs in the application’s own folder, such as
C:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH Jukeboxpreferences.dll. - Which Windows architecture is involved? Public file identification reports this historical DLL as Win32, or 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its private DLL should remain with the application.
- Did antivirus recently remove it? Check Windows Security before downloading or copying anything.

The safest repair is usually to restore or reinstall the complete MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX installation. Do not begin by downloading a similarly named DLL or copying it into a Windows system folder.
What is preferences.dll?
preferences.dll is an application DLL associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX and developed by MUSICMATCH, Inc. Its name indicates a preferences-related component, but public information does not document its exact exported functions.

The reported historical file is a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That does not mean it needs an x64 replacement on 64-bit Windows. Windows uses WOW64 to run many 32-bit applications on 64-bit editions, while the application’s own DLLs remain in the 32-bit program directory.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
This application failed to start because preferences.dll was not found.
The program can't start because preferences.dll is missing from your computer.
The file preferences.dll is missing or corrupted.
A required component is missing: preferences.dll.
Error loading preferences.dll.
These messages generally mean that the program tried to load the DLL and Windows could not complete the request. The file may truly be absent, but the message does not prove that it is the only problem.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording is easy to misunderstand. Windows may find preferences.dll but fail to find a second library that preferences.dll requires. In that situation, the named DLL exists, yet loading still fails.

- The file belongs to another Musicmatch build.
- Antivirus software is blocking it.
- A required legacy runtime is absent.
- The application and DLL have incompatible architectures.
“Not designed to run on Windows”
A related loader message can say:
<path>preferences.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
This is a generic Windows loader error. For this file, treat it as evidence of a corrupt, incompatible, blocked, or wrong-version application file rather than proof that Windows needs a replacement system DLL.
Fix 1: Repair MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX
Use this first if the error appears while launching Musicmatch.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
The exact repair options depend on how the application was installed. Some classic desktop programs do not expose a Repair button.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Launch Musicmatch again after the repair. If it starts without the DLL message, the application registration or one of its installed files was likely damaged.

If Windows does not show a Repair option:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Choose Repair, Change, or a similarly named installer option.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If there is no repair option, uninstall Musicmatch, restart the computer, and reinstall the complete application from the original installer or a verified backup. Do not copy only preferences.dll from another installation. The DLL must match the executable and the rest of the application.
Musicmatch Jukebox is discontinued, and a current official vendor download for this file has not been verified. If you no longer have the original installer, avoid random DLL download pages. Look for installation media or a backup that you already trust, and consider running the legacy application in an isolated older Windows environment if modern Windows cannot support it.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
If Musicmatch worked previously and stopped immediately after an antivirus scan, Windows Security may have quarantined or removed the file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that references the Musicmatch installation directory.
- Check the file path, threat name, action, and publisher information.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

- The file is in the expected Musicmatch directory.
- You obtained the application from trusted installation media.
- The detection does not indicate an active threat.
- You are confident the file has not been replaced or modified.
Microsoft’s Protection History documentation explains the available quarantine, restore, remove, and allow actions. Protection History entries are retained for a limited period, so check it soon after the failure.
If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and reinstall Musicmatch from trusted media. Do not disable Windows Security just to make the error disappear.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete application
A complete reinstall is more reliable than manually replacing one DLL.
- Back up any Musicmatch data you still need.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover Musicmatch files if you are certain they are part of the old installation.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Launch the program from its installed shortcut.
If the installer fails, right-click it, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and test an appropriate compatibility setting. Compatibility mode may help an old installer launch, but it cannot restore discontinued online services or supply missing application files.
If the program installs but the same message returns, confirm the executable’s actual location. A shortcut may point to a second or incomplete Musicmatch installation.
Fix 4: Confirm that the file is in the correct directory
If you have a known-good backup or original installer, inspect the application directory rather than a Windows system folder.
- Right-click the Musicmatch shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location, if available.
- Look for
preferences.dllbeside the Musicmatch program files.
Do not add copies to System32 or SysWOW64. Windows DLL search behavior depends on the application, its working directory, and its loading rules. A system-folder copy can be ignored, load the wrong build, or create a new compatibility problem.
Manual restoration is reasonable only when the source is your own trusted installer or backup, the file belongs to the exact application build, and antivirus checks do not indicate tampering. Reinstalling the full application remains safer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency
If preferences.dll exists but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, investigate dependencies.
Start with the Musicmatch installer logs, if available. You can also use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to determine which library fails to load. The goal is to identify the missing secondary component, not to download every DLL named in an error message.
Do not assume that the latest Visual C++ package will repair this particular file. A 32-bit application may require an x86 runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit, but no verified evidence establishes a specific modern runtime requirement for preferences.dll.

If an installer specifically reports a missing Microsoft runtime, obtain the package from Microsoft’s official documentation and select the architecture requested by the application. Avoid installing unrelated runtime packages based only on a generic DLL error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Use SFC and DISM only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not the normal first repair for an application-owned Musicmatch DLL.
Use them when you also see Windows components failing, system applications behaving incorrectly, or multiple unrelated protected files reporting corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Musicmatch again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process only as Microsoft’s guidance recommends and review the result. Neither command replaces the correct Musicmatch installation.
When repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling MUSICMATCH remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Check recent system changes
If the error began immediately after a software installation, update, or driver change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It is designed not to remove personal files, but review the affected-program list before continuing.
Fix 8: Consider drivers only when symptoms point to drivers
A missing preferences.dll message by itself is not evidence of a display, audio, chipset, or storage-driver problem. Check drivers only if the failure began with wider symptoms such as device errors, crashes, missing hardware, or a recent driver installation.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when the evidence points to that device.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Features are not a normal fix for preferences.dll. Do not enable random legacy components merely because a Musicmatch DLL is missing. Enable a Windows feature only when the application’s installer explicitly identifies that feature as required.
Recommended Free Tools
Driver version hunting across multiple hardware vendors can be tedious, especially when the file error is only a symptom of a wider problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it should not replace repairing MUSICMATCH when Musicmatch is the actual caller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this preferences.dll is a self-registering ActiveX or COM component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 preferences.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged Musicmatch installation, or install a dependency. It may produce an entry-point error or an architecture mismatch message.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor or installer documentation specifically says that this DLL must be registered. For this file, reinstalling the parent application is the appropriate repair.

What if the file is malware?
A filename is not proof of authenticity. A suspicious preferences.dll may be unrelated to Musicmatch, particularly if it appears in an unexpected directory, has an unusual publisher, was recently created, or triggered antivirus detection.
Check:
- The full file path.
- The file’s digital signature, if present.
- The antivirus detection name.
- Whether the file appeared after installing unknown software.
- Whether the error names Musicmatch or another executable.
Run a Windows Security scan before restoring a quarantined file. If the file is in a temporary, user-profile, or unrelated application’s directory, do not move it into the Musicmatch folder just because the names match.
If MUSICMATCH still will not start
Use this order:
- Identify the exact executable producing the message.
- Confirm the installation directory.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Repair the application if Windows offers that option.
- Uninstall and reinstall the complete Musicmatch package.
- Restore the application from a trusted backup or original installer.
- Investigate dependencies if the DLL exists but cannot load.
- Test the program in a compatible older Windows environment or isolated virtual machine.
- Use System Restore only when a recent system change clearly caused the failure.
- Use Windows repair options only if other Windows components are also damaged.
Do not keep adding DLL copies to system folders. That makes it harder to determine which file Windows is loading and can introduce an incompatible or unsafe library.
Frequently asked questions
Is preferences.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, an application from MUSICMATCH, Inc. It should not normally be treated as a Windows system file.
Is preferences.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The historical file is reported as Win32, or 32-bit. Verify the actual file if you have one, because public listings can contain conflicting metadata. A 32-bit Musicmatch installation should use its matching application DLL on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep it in the application’s own installation directory. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage locations for third-party application DLLs.
Can I download preferences.dll from a DLL website?
That is risky and often fails to solve the underlying problem. You may receive malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a file with no matching dependencies. Use the original application installer, a trusted backup, or a verified installation source instead.
Why does the error remain when the file exists?
The file may be corrupt, blocked, the wrong architecture, from another build, or dependent on another missing library. The program may also be loading a different copy from another installation directory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does reinstalling DirectX or Visual C++ fix it?
Not automatically. No verified evidence shows that this specific DLL requires a particular modern DirectX or Visual C++ package. Install a runtime only when the application’s installer or dependency investigation identifies it.
What if another program names preferences.dll?
A filename alone does not identify the caller. Check the full error dialog, shortcut target, executable path, and Event Viewer entry. Another application could theoretically contain a private DLL with the same name, in which case repair that application rather than Musicmatch.
What if the original Musicmatch installer is unavailable?
Do not use an arbitrary DLL download. Search your own backups or installation media, and consider running the legacy application in a compatible, isolated older Windows environment. If no trusted installation source exists, the safest choice may be to retire the discontinued application rather than introduce an unknown binary.
