Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →opencl.dll is missing because the OpenCL runtime loader or its graphics-driver package is damaged, incomplete, or unavailable. The safest fix is usually to identify the installed GPU and reinstall its official AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel driver rather than downloading opencl.dll separately.
This file is the OpenCL Client DLL, part of the OpenCL Installable Client Driver, developed by the Khronos Group. The loader provides the OpenCL API entry point and passes requests to the hardware vendor’s OpenCL implementation. It is not a complete graphics driver by itself and is not an ordinary Windows component maintained by Microsoft.

What the error means
OpenCL is a computing interface used by some games, graphics applications, media tools, engineering programs, and GPU utilities. When an application starts, it may try to load opencl.dll before accessing the vendor’s OpenCL implementation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because OpenCL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because OpenCL.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”
- “OpenCL.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean that the application itself owns the file. Many programs depend on the OpenCL runtime installed by the graphics driver.

On 64-bit Windows, the loader can normally appear in locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32OpenCL.dllfor 64-bit programsC:WindowsSysWOW64OpenCL.dllfor 32-bit programs
The names are confusing: System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit OpenCL loader, and a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit loader. Do not copy one architecture into the other folder.
Before fixing it, identify the program and GPU
The correct repair depends on two things: which program is failing and which graphics hardware is installed.
Find the failing program
Read the title bar or full error dialog. Note whether the failure occurs in:
- One game
- One graphics or engineering application
- A vendor utility
- Several unrelated programs
- Windows startup
If only one application fails while other OpenCL software works, repair that application first after checking the graphics driver.
If the error appears during startup, the caller may be a graphics utility or an old startup entry left behind after a driver change. The error dialog, Task Manager, or the affected shortcut can help identify it.
Identify the graphics vendor
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the exact device name.
- Double-click the device and check the General tab for warning messages.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver status.
The device may be an AMD Radeon, NVIDIA GeForce or professional GPU, Intel graphics device, or an integrated graphics adapter. If Display adapters shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the normal vendor driver may be missing or incomplete.
Do not assume that the application vendor should supply the file. The OpenCL loader and vendor implementation are commonly delivered with the graphics driver.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official graphics driver
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus the restart
This is the most likely solution, especially after a graphics-driver update, failed uninstall, GPU replacement, or clean Windows installation.
Download the correct package
Use the manufacturer’s official driver page:
- AMD Radeon Software and graphics drivers
- NVIDIA graphics drivers
- Intel Graphics Driver packages
Select the exact GPU model and the correct Windows architecture. Avoid selecting a similar model simply because its name looks close.
If the computer is a laptop or branded desktop, the computer manufacturer may provide a customized graphics package. Start with that package if the vendor warns that its driver must be used.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install the driver
- Close the affected application.
- Disconnect from VPN software or other utilities that may interrupt the installer.
- Start the graphics-driver installer.
- Choose the clean-install, factory-reset, or equivalent option if it is offered.
- Allow the installer to replace the existing driver components.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not require it.
- Open the affected program again.
A clean installation is especially appropriate when:
- The error began immediately after a driver update.
- The previous driver was removed incompletely.
- The GPU was replaced.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- The installer previously stopped or rolled back.
- The computer has changed GPU vendors.
Do not interrupt the installation when the display briefly turns black or changes resolution. That can occur while the graphics driver is being replaced.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale or mismatched drivers, and its free scan shows what needs attention; the repair or driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source when you know the exact GPU.
Check the result
After restarting:
- Return to Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Confirm that the expected GPU appears without a warning icon.
- Start the affected application.
If the program now starts, the missing loader was probably part of an incomplete or corrupted graphics-driver installation.

Fix 2: Repair the affected application or game
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Use this fix when only one game or application reports the error and other OpenCL programs work normally.
Use a game launcher’s repair command
Most game launchers provide a file-verification feature. The wording differs, but the process usually follows this pattern:
- Open the launcher.
- Find the affected game in your library.
- Open its menu or properties.
- Select Verify files, Repair, or an equivalent command.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher.
- Start the game again.
The launcher may replace files belonging to the game, but it may not repair the system-wide OpenCL loader supplied by the GPU driver. If verification reports no problem, return to Fix 1.
Repair or reinstall a desktop application
If the program appears in Windows settings:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps and features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its trusted publisher.
Some applications include their own maintenance tool. Look in the application’s installation folder or Start menu for Repair, Modify, or Maintenance.
If the application is obsolete, it may require an OpenCL runtime version that is no longer compatible with the current driver. Check the application’s support information before forcing an older DLL into its folder.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software can quarantine the loader or a vendor OpenCL component. This can happen after a driver installation or after a file is replaced.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to
OpenCL.dll, the graphics driver, or the affected program. - Check the file path and publisher information.
Restore or allow the file only when you have verified that it came from a trusted, signed graphics-driver installation and that the system is not infected. Restoring a quarantined file places it back on the device, where security software may detect it again.
If Defender repeatedly detects the same file:
- Do not add a broad exclusion immediately.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Remove unofficial copies of
OpenCL.dll. - Download the driver again from the GPU manufacturer.
- Reinstall the driver using its clean-install option.
- Check the detection details again.
A file in a random application folder is not automatically safe merely because its name is OpenCL.dll.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart
Use Windows repair commands when several system files are failing, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or the driver installer cannot complete. These commands are secondary for an OpenCL problem because the file usually comes through a graphics-driver package.
Microsoft documents DISM for repairing the Windows component store and System File Checker for checking protected system files.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
Run System File Checker
Open an administrator terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application.

- Corrupt files were found but could not all be repaired: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
- The scan fails immediately: check Windows Update and available disk space before trying again.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when repeatedly running SFC and DISM does not make the cause clear; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and a vendor-driver problem still requires reinstalling the graphics package.
Apply pending Windows updates after the repair commands complete. Windows Update can repair broader component problems, but it does not replace the need for the correct AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel OpenCL package.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A program can fail even when OpenCL.dll exists if it is the wrong architecture or if the matching vendor implementation is missing.
On 64-bit Windows:
- A 64-bit application normally loads the copy from
System32. - A 32-bit application normally loads the copy from
SysWOW64. - A 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL.
To check the application’s architecture, look in its documentation or installation details. Task Manager may show (32 bit) beside a 32-bit process on some Windows versions. The application publisher can also confirm whether its program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not rename, move, or swap the files between these folders. Reinstall the graphics driver so its installer can place the matching components in the correct locations.
If OpenCL.dll exists but the application still reports it as missing, also check whether:
- The vendor ICD was installed and registered.
- Device Manager shows a working GPU.
- The application contains an incorrect private copy of
OpenCL.dll. - The driver installer completed successfully.
- The program requires an incompatible OpenCL runtime.
An application-specific copy should not be replaced casually. Reinstalling the application and graphics driver is safer than selecting a DLL from another computer.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The OpenCL loader is normally loaded by an application and used together with vendor ICD registration. It is not normally repaired by running:
regsvr32 OpenCL.dll
That command can produce an error stating that the entry point was not found. The error does not prove that the file is missing or that Windows needs a different copy.
Use the graphics-driver installer to restore the loader and the vendor implementation. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s instructions specifically say that a particular DLL supports registration.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features only for related dependencies
Time needed: 5 minutes
There is no general Windows Feature that installs a universal OpenCL runtime for every GPU. Do not enable random optional features as a substitute for reinstalling the graphics driver.

Why downloading a standalone DLL is unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and copied files from forums, file-sharing pages, or another computer. A replacement may:
- Contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- Be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Be incompatible with the installed GPU driver.
- Overwrite a newer shared loader.
- Leave the vendor OpenCL implementation missing.
- Hide the real cause, such as a failed driver installation.
- Cause a different application to fail later.
The safe sources are the official graphics-driver package for the installed AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel hardware, the affected application’s trusted installer, and Microsoft’s documented Windows repair tools.
Recommended Free Tools
The Khronos loader project is a developer source project, not a universal consumer driver installer. Installing or building the loader alone does not supply the hardware vendor’s OpenCL implementation.
Causes, from most likely to least likely
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted GPU driver | Clean reinstall of the matching official driver |
| Failed driver update or GPU replacement | Reinstall both driver components and restart |
| One damaged game or application | Verify files, repair, or reinstall that program |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the file’s origin, scan, then reinstall the trusted driver |
| Windows component corruption | DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and restart |
| Stale GPU utility or startup entry | Identify the caller, then reinstall or remove that utility |
| Malware or an unofficial DLL replacement | Scan the system and reinstall the official driver |
| Unsupported hardware and software combination | Check compatibility with the application and GPU vendor |
If the error still remains
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact executable named by the error.
- Confirm whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check both expected Windows locations for the architecture-appropriate loader.
- Confirm that Device Manager shows the correct GPU without a warning code.
- Re-run the GPU installer and verify that it completed successfully.
- Remove stale copies of
OpenCL.dllfrom the application directory only when the application vendor identifies them as incorrect. - Check whether the vendor’s OpenCL ICD registration is present.
- Test another OpenCL-dependent application if one is available.
- Check whether the program was built for an incompatible OpenCL or runtime version.
- Review antivirus protection history again.
If the error began after a recent change and a restore point predates it, System Restore may be appropriate. Use it only after confirming that the restore point is from before the driver or application failure.
A Windows repair installation is a later escalation for broader corruption. Consider it only after DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and a correct graphics-driver reinstall have failed.
If the GPU is obsolete or the installed Windows version is no longer supported by its driver, the application may not be able to use OpenCL reliably. Check the application and hardware vendor’s compatibility requirements rather than forcing an older DLL.

FAQ
Is OpenCL.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
It can be located in Windows system directories, but OpenCL is not native to Windows in the same way as ordinary Windows APIs. Graphics-driver packages commonly install the shared loader there.
Does Khronos Group make my GPU driver?
No. Khronos defines and maintains the OpenCL technology and loader project. AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, or another hardware vendor supplies the implementation that communicates with its device.
Is OpenCL.dll safe?
A copy installed by a trusted, correctly signed graphics-driver package is expected. A copy downloaded from an unknown site or found in an unexpected folder should not be trusted solely because its filename looks correct.
Why does a 32-bit program fail when the file exists?
It may be looking for the 32-bit loader in SysWOW64, while only the 64-bit copy is installed. It may also be missing the vendor’s matching 32-bit OpenCL implementation. Reinstall the complete driver package rather than copying files manually.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run regsvr32 OpenCL.dll?
Generally, no. The OpenCL loader is not normally repaired through DLL registration, and regsvr32 may report that the required registration entry point is missing.
Will SFC always restore the file?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files when Windows component corruption is involved. A missing or damaged vendor OpenCL package normally requires reinstalling the graphics driver.
Should I reinstall the game?
Only when the problem is limited to that game or its files. If several programs fail, repair the graphics driver first. A game reinstall cannot reliably replace a system-wide vendor runtime.
What is the safest first step?
Identify the failing program and GPU, then reinstall the matching official graphics driver with its clean-install option when available. Restart Windows and test before trying more invasive repairs.
