printmanagementprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows component called the Print WMI Provider. If Windows says printmanagementprovider.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What is printmanagementprovider.dll?
The file supports printer management through Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. WMI providers supply information and operations to Windows tools and applications through the WMI service. Microsoft documents that provider DLLs and their associated MOF definitions normally reside under %WINDIR%System32Wbem.Microsoft’s WMI architecture documentation

It is part of Windows, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET package, game runtime, or ordinary printer-manufacturer DLL. A printer program may trigger the error while querying Windows, but that does not mean the program owns the file.

First, install updates and restart
A failed or incomplete Windows update is a common reason for a system component to become unavailable.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on a restart.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
Try the printer-management operation again. If the error began immediately after an update and you use Windows 11, you may also have a repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings on supported Windows 11 systems.Microsoft’s Windows Update repair option

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallRepair the Windows component with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for a missing or damaged printmanagementprovider.dll.
1. Run DISM
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which Windows uses to restore protected system files. An apparently paused percentage does not necessarily mean the process has failed.
2. Run System File Checker
When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected printer or management tool again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing missing or corrupted Windows files.Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions
If repeatedly hunting through Windows commands and logs is not practical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what it finds; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a replacement for Microsoft’s servicing tools.
What the result means
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC did not find damaged protected files. The problem may be a missing dependency, WMI issue, driver problem, or application-specific fault.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, continue to the repair-source section below.
Check whether the file exists in the correct location
Use an elevated Command Prompt to check the expected paths:
where printmanagementprovider.dll
dir "%windir%System32wbemprintmanagementprovider.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64wbemprintmanagementprovider.dll"
The commands may show no result for a path that is not used by your Windows build. The important questions are:
- Does the file exist under a Windows WMI directory?
- Is it signed by Microsoft?
- Does its architecture match the process trying to load it?
- Does Windows still report a failure after DISM and SFC repair?
A file with the right name in an application folder is not automatically genuine. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Look for a valid signature associated with Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Corporation. If the signature is missing, invalid, or the file is located in an unexpected directory, do not replace a known Windows file with it.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection or during malware cleanup.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
printmanagementprovider.dll. - Check the file path and digital signature before taking any action.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it came from the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. Do not allow an unknown copy simply because its filename matches. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless you deliberately allow it.Microsoft Protection History guidance
If the file looks suspicious, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because Windows will restart.
If a printer driver or printer utility triggers the error
A printer driver can call the Print WMI Provider while displaying status, managing queues, or detecting installed printers. The provider is still a Windows component, so repair Windows before replacing printer software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Windows repair completes but the error appears only when using one printer:
- Disconnect the printer if it is connected by USB.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Visit the printer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Download the driver for your exact Windows edition and architecture.
- Install it, then reconnect or add the printer again.
You can also inspect the driver through Device Manager:
Rank #3
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or select Browse my computer for drivers if you already downloaded an official package.
- Restart Windows after installation.
If you have several printers and are unsure which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; the full-version driver installation is optional, and downloading the correct package from the printer manufacturer remains the safest manual route.
Do not download a vendor DLL and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the printer’s folder. A vendor driver may be the trigger without being the missing Windows component.

Check Windows Features and the Print Spooler
A damaged printing feature or stopped spooler can make printer-management tools fail even when the provider file exists.
Check optional Windows features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review features related to printing or print management if they are present on your Windows edition.
- If a required feature is unchecked, select it and choose OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated features merely because their names contain “print.” The available list differs between Windows editions.
Check the Print Spooler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Confirm that its status is Running and its startup type is normally Automatic.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start.
- If it is running but printer operations remain broken, right-click it and choose Restart.
If WMI or multiple Windows administration tools are failing, inspect Event Viewer rather than deleting the WMI repository. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs and look for errors at the time of the failure. Do not immediately rebuild or delete the WMI repository, because that can damage unrelated providers.
Understand the exact error message
These messages are generic Windows loader errors:
- “The program can’t start because printmanagementprovider.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting printmanagementprovider.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading printmanagementprovider.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because printmanagementprovider.dll was not found.”
- “printmanagementprovider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. A dependency required by the provider may be missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture.
If the dialog names a particular application, check that application’s own repair or verification option only when its logs identify it as the loader:
- Open the application’s settings or launcher.
- Look for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
- Run the repair.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not assume that reinstalling the named application will restore a Windows component.
Use a matching Windows repair source if DISM fails
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible. Microsoft documents using /Source and, when appropriate, /LimitAccess for this situation.Microsoft’s DISM repair-source documentation

Do not use a random ISO or copy printmanagementprovider.dll from another computer. After mounting matching installation media, the exact source path and image index depend on that media, so use Microsoft’s documented procedure rather than guessing a command.

Then run DISM with a matching repair source and run sfc /scannow again.
Try System Restore after a known change
If the failure started after installing a driver, cleanup utility, update, or other system change, System Restore may return the system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs to an earlier state without removing personal files.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options.Microsoft System Restore guidance
Last resort: repair-reinstall Windows
If DISM, SFC, a matching source, System Restore, and printer-driver repair all fail, perform a Windows repair reinstall or in-place installation using official Microsoft media. Choose the option to Keep personal files and apps when it is offered, and back up important files first.Microsoft’s Windows installation-media repair guidance
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
No separate official Microsoft download package for this individual DLL was identified. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, have no valid Microsoft signature, or fail because the real problem is a dependency or WMI registration issue.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver package instead.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer
Windows components are serviced as part of a matched operating-system build. Manual copying can create version, architecture, signature, component-store, and WMI-registration mismatches.

Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation There is no Microsoft repair guidance instructing users to manually register PrintManagementProvider.dll. Running it against the wrong architecture or a DLL without the required entry point will not restore a missing Windows component.

Is printmanagementprovider.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is identified as the Microsoft Print WMI Provider, a Windows component associated with printer management and WMI. Confirm the location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Observed inventories include a 32-bit build, but the correct architecture and path depend on the Windows build and the process loading it. Do not replace a 32-bit or 64-bit file based only on its name.
Should I reinstall my printer?
Only if Windows repair succeeds but the problem remains limited to one printer or vendor utility. Remove the affected printer, restart, and install its current driver from the manufacturer.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
Run DISM and SFC, check its signature and path, inspect antivirus quarantine, verify the Print Spooler, and look for missing dependencies or WMI errors in Event Viewer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I fix it by registering the DLL?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not the recommended repair for this missing-file error. Windows servicing is safer and more appropriate.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use a repair reinstall only after Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching repair source, System Restore, and relevant driver repairs have failed. Choose Keep personal files and apps when available.
