Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows Search, Explorer, Outlook, a search utility, or another application
- When it appears: at startup, when opening a document, after Windows Update, after antivirus activity, or after installing software
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type
- The exact wording: missing, not found, error loading, or “not designed to run on Windows”

If mssprxy.dll is missing or damaged, do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. Repair Windows first, then repair the application that exposed the problem if Windows itself is intact.
What mssprxy.dll is and where it belongs
Windows Search is built into Windows and supports indexing and search features used by Windows components and applications. Microsoft documentation lists mssprxy.dll among Windows Search files alongside components such as mssrch.dll, searchindexer.exe, and searchfilterhost.exe. See Microsoft’s Windows Search overview.

These folders can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit application may need the 32-bit copy, while a 64-bit process uses the 64-bit copy. Do not copy one architecture over the other.

File versions and sizes vary with the Windows edition, architecture, build, and servicing history. Microsoft update records show separate x86 and x64 variants, including a Windows 10 x86 example at version 7.0.10240.16384 and an x64 example at 7.0.10240.16392. Treat older version numbers as build-specific examples, not universal current values.
Error messages you may see
Commonly reported variants include:
The program can't start because mssprxy.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
The code execution cannot proceed because mssprxy.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
Error loading mssprxy.dll. The specified module could not be found.
You may also see:
C:WindowsSystem32mssprxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
The last message does not necessarily mean the named file alone is defective. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate that a dependency required by mssprxy.dll is missing.
The application displaying the error may not be the cause. Outlook, Explorer extensions, indexing utilities, and document-search software can load Windows Search components. The first application that requests the damaged component is often just where the failure becomes visible.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair protected files
This is the safest and most likely fix when the file is missing from a Windows system directory or the problem began after an update.
Install pending updates
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
A failed or incomplete update can leave the component store or protected system files inconsistent.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions cover this sequence.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Reopen the program that showed the error.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not copy mssprxy.dll from another computer. Use a matching Windows installation source with the appropriate repair-source syntax:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Microsoft’s detailed repair guidance explains the source requirement.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the system issues involved and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the authoritative repair path.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file after a mistaken detection or after file corruption has altered its contents.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check Windows Security
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
mssprxy.dll. - If it is quarantined, inspect its original path and publisher before taking action.
Restore the file only if:
- Its original location was the appropriate Windows system directory.
- Its properties show Microsoft as the publisher.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- A current Windows Security scan does not identify broader malware activity.
Microsoft explains Protection History and quarantine decisions in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Do not disable antivirus to install a downloaded DLL. If the file is restored and Windows Security immediately detects it again, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Fix 3: Verify the file’s location and Microsoft signature
The filename alone does not prove authenticity. Malware can use a familiar Windows filename.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - If the file is not there, check
C:WindowsSysWOW64on 64-bit Windows. - Right-click
mssprxy.dlland select Properties. - Open the Details tab.
- Look for a description such as Microsoft Search Proxy and a Microsoft-associated company or product entry.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A copy outside the Windows system directories, an unexpected publisher, or an invalid signature deserves investigation. Run a full Windows Security scan and avoid launching the file manually.

Fix 4: Confirm that Windows Search is available
A missing DLL and a disabled Search service are different problems, but both can appear as search failures.
- Press Win + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Search.
- Double-click it.
- Check its current service state and startup configuration.
- If it is disabled, change the startup setting to a suitable non-disabled configuration for your Windows installation.
- Select Start, then Apply → OK.
If Windows Search starts but indexing is failing:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security → Searching Windows.
- Review the indexing configuration.
- Use Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting guidance for the relevant symptom.
Rebuilding an index can correct search results and indexing failures, but it does not replace a missing or corrupt mssprxy.dll. If the service will not start, follow Microsoft’s Windows Search service troubleshooting after completing DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Repair the application that exposes the error
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC complete successfully, and the error appears only in one application, the application may be damaged or may have an incompatible plug-in.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
If no Repair option exists:
- Download the application’s installer from its official developer or publisher.
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version using the official installer.
- Test before restoring optional plug-ins or extensions.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, depending on the launcher. Reinstalling an application repairs that application’s files. It does not repair the Windows copy of mssprxy.dll if Windows itself is damaged.
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not logical first fixes for this file because mssprxy.dll belongs to Windows Search rather than those runtime packages.
Fix 6: Consider System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or security-product action and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore normally keeps personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.

Do not use regsvr32 as the default fix
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring a missing or corrupt Windows DLL.
Do not start with:
regsvr32 mssprxy.dll
Some builds may technically expose registration-related exports, but that does not establish registration as the cause. Running the command against the wrong architecture or an invalid copy can create another error without repairing Windows. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its intended use.
Drivers and Device Manager
A display, printer, or storage driver does not normally provide mssprxy.dll. Do not use Device Manager as the first repair for this file. Consider drivers only when the DLL error began alongside disk errors, Windows crashes, or a device failure.
To check a relevant driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Avoid replacing several drivers at once, because that makes the cause harder to trace. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers instead of making you hunt through many hardware entries; the full version performs driver installation, and it is optional rather than a required fix for mssprxy.dll.
If the error remains after repair
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component:
- Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor the affected file. - Check disk health and available storage.
- Run DISM again with a matching Windows installation source.
- Test whether the issue affects every Windows account or only one profile.
- Scan for malware with Windows Security.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation using matching official Microsoft installation media.
Do not delete registry keys, remove TrustedInstaller-protected files, or copy DLLs into application folders based on forum instructions.
FAQ
Is mssprxy.dll malware?
It is a real Microsoft Windows Search component, but a filename alone proves nothing. Verify the expected Windows directory and a valid Microsoft digital signature.
Should I download mssprxy.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, match the wrong Windows build, or hide the underlying component-store problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or an official application installer.
Does mssprxy.dll belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, the normal convention is 64-bit files in System32 and 32-bit files in SysWOW64. The correct copy depends on the process architecture. Do not manually swap them.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. mssprxy.dll is part of Windows Search, not Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
When should I reinstall the affected program?
Reinstall it when only that program fails and Windows repair finds no system corruption. Use its official installer or launcher repair function.
What if the error says a dependent module is missing?
Complete Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. The named mssprxy.dll may be present while another dependency is absent or damaged.
